AES Library Beautification Project Allyson Joubert, senior at Amity High School and fine arts enthusiast, has been the cadet-helper in the elementary school library for the past two years. She has contributed her talents to making posters, designing bulletin boards, and otherwise supporting the library program with her artistic prowess. For her final swan song, Allyson is painting a wall mural outside the main library entrance enhanced by characters from children’s literature such as Ents, the Pigeon, and a Big Bad Wolf. Allyson presented a sketch of her mural to principal Nanci Sheeran for approval. After approval, she began transferring her ideas to the blank spaces around the library doors. There were many reports of “vandalism” because not everyone knew that she was working on the mural project, but now members of the elementary school community are taking note of her progress. The sketching is finished and next week Allyson will start to paint. Rodda Paints of McMinnville generously donated the materials for this project. A nice legacy for Allyson as she leaves the academic world of Amity School District, and a big bonus in beauty for the children of Amity Elementary.

AES Family Art/Lit Night: Relating Art to Learning Family Art/Lit Night on Feb. 4 was another wellattended family event. Students and their families explored art and literature through a friendly and FREE format of fun. There were clowns, oobleck, green chapeaux, Valentines for Vets, professional cartoonist, dancing, and just general “fiddling” around in the library.

Making St. Patrick’s Day Hats

We had twelve door-prize winners and some very generous donations made to the Haiti Relief project sponsored by our generous children. The 5th grade Outdoor School dinner fundraiser was yummy, as well. Hope to see you at our next Family Art/Lit Night on April 27th during No TV Week!

AES 5th Grade Quilt Raffle The Arts Alliance of Yamhill County granted $100 toward a specific art project to be completed by elementary students in Amity. The 5th-graders created an abstract wall-hanging/lap quilt to meet the criteria of the project in hopes that proceeds from raffling it could support programs in the elementary school. Fifty percent of profits will go to Outdoor School and the remaining profits will go to Family Art/Lit Night. The quilt is displayed to the right of the trophy case just inside the foyer and across from the office. Raffle tickets are $1.00 each or $5.00 for six and can be purchased in the library before or after school until May 1. Thank you for supporting our children’s programs .

Amity High School Fundraises for Doernbecher Doernbecher fundraising is in full swing at Amity High School and the spirit shown by the enthusiastic student body is already threatening the $3,000 goal set prior to the start of events. The variety of fundraising activities occurring this year seek to involve not only the students at Amity High, but also the community at large, creating an exciting atmosphere for our small town as we strive to make a difference in children’s lives.

An incredibly inspiring and well-orchestrated assembly kicked off the series of fundraisers on February 2; this was put on by the leadership class under the direction of Emily Eshleman who is undertaking the entire Doernbecher season as her senior project. The assembly concluded by initiating the first event, the coin drive. This annual event involves pairing high school staff with members of the student body in an entertaining competition to peddle for loose change. The goal of this activity is for the competitors to raise more money than their opponent in order to have them turned into a human ice cream sundae in front of the student body; the event has already raised over $500. Several minor fundraisers have already successfully concluded; these were the Car Bash, Paper Hearts and Crush Cans. The Car Bash involved allowing stressed basketball fans the chance to beat a car with a sledgehammer outside the high school gym, for the small price of $1 for five hits. Paper Hearts inspired friendly competition as people donated money in order to decorate a paper heart, which they placed on a wall of the gymnasium; the more someone donated, the bigger the heart. Lastly, the Crush Cans fundraiser was an amusing event where Amity High students could anonymously buy cans of Crush soda and send them to their “crushes.” Those that received these nameless gifts then had the option to pay in order to find the identity of the sender. The final fundraising event has yet to take place and will be occurring in the month of April; this is the muchanticipated “Big Man on Campus” male pageant. This involves boys from Amity High volunteering to collect donations and then to show off their talent at a male pageant open to the whole community. This is one event no one will want to miss. Amity High School encourages everyone in the community to get involved and help make a difference during this year’s Doernbecher fundraising.

Amity Robotics – 2nd Place in State Championship Both robotics teams had a successful season this year. Both the AHS and AMS teams qualified for the state championship in early February. Then on Feb 28th, the top 24 teams from across Oregon competed in the FIRST Tech Challenge Robotics State Championship. The Middle School students were the big winners, coming home with a “2nd place” trophy. The High School team had a rough day and ranked at 18th as they won 2 and lost 3 matches. The FIRST Tech Robotics Challenge has a new challenge every year. This year the students had to make wiffle balls fly. Some 60 balls are on a 12’X12’ playing field where 4 robots battle to capture and then score in various goals. One goal is 3’ high and the other is 4’ outside of the field. Robots are limited to 18” in height and run in 2 modes – a

computer programmed autonomous mode and a student driver controlled mode.

5

Both teams had great designs and demonstrated teamwork and skill. These “tech trophies” celebrate the amazing things that Amity students accomplish. Robotics will start up in the fall at all three buildings…. AHS and AMS are helping to start a Lego League Robotics program at the Elementary School. Contact coach Craig Hudson 503-835-3441 for more info.

AMS Pre-A/P Language Arts Double Dare "We sat here, watching them tremble in their seats...then, Bam!!! It's a double dare!!" echoed rival player Harley Hoff. She was one of the fortunate fans who witnessed history at the Double Dare final round as Justin Jones, Erica Patterson, and Samantha Tuck amassed 48 points to take the school championship. They finished two points ahead of Delaney Cruz, Ryan Kraemer, and Mathew Riffel.

Erica Patterson and Justin Jones (Not pictured: Samantha Tuck)

Isaiah Irving observed that Jones, Patterson, and Tuck "...got lots of steals which helped them out BIG TIME!" In fact, 13 points of their school high score came from takeaways. In Double Dare, students are challenged by other teams to demonstrate their knowledge of spelling, usage, poetry devices, and general concepts of writing. Based on the degree of certainty, players may "double dare" question creators whenever differences of opinion arise. Solid work with their own questions was also a key factor. "They studied hard, worked hard, and deserved the win," exclaimed Tanner Schmidt. McKenzie Hunt noted, "The whole team's head was in the game...when they answered the last question...that lead them to the victory." The players themselves seemed beyond words in post game interviews. "...I am both surprised and thrilled..." said a celebrating Patterson. "I had to take some chances for my team, but we pulled it through in the end," said Tuck. Jones summed up his feelings with one word: "Exciting." Rumors have spread throughout the league that members of the team will be traded after this quarter, so speculation of a repeat championship is unlikely. What remains for each player, though, is the memory of the victory today.

6

The Amity Middle School chess team did very well at the regional tournament at the Delphian School on January 30. Cody Pennington had the most success for the day and led the team with 3 wins. Other team members are Kristian Barnett, Jack Markee, Kyle Drader, and Justin Jones. Good job, guys!

Cartoonist Will Robertson ‘s Visit Inspires AMS Students Seventh and 8th grade students had the opportunity to participate in a two day workshop with AMS alum Will Robertson last quarter. Students learned approaches for creating ideas, formatting them, and adding humorous drawings. On the second day, each student created his/her own comic strip based on a story from his/ her life.

AMS COMIC STRIP CONTEST WINNERS Congratulations to eighth grade students Shane Miles and Tiffani Kazunas, who were selected as the winner and runner-up, respectively, in Will Robertson's comic strip contest. Last month, Robertson, an Amity alum, gave a comic strip workshop for seventh and eighth grade middle school students. Students then created a one-panel cartoon of their own and submitted them to Will. Shane's cartoon depicts a boy who, after watching an episode of Superman, believes he can fly, only to find out there is a difference between television and gravity-ruled worlds. Tiffani's panel, titled "Tiffani & Erica" features two girls apparently locked out of their house. One girls climbs a fences and walks through mud to get to the back door. When she finally enters the house, she finds the other girl already inside; that girl had decided to actually check to see if the door was locked before going to extremes.

As a prize, Will Roberston redrew Shane's cartoon, using the characters from his comic strip, "Casey and Kyle", and presented Shane with a framed copy. When he publishes the cartoon, it will include "Idea by Shane Miles" on the strip. Miles joins seventh grade student, Nathan Walker, who won the seventh grade contest earlier this month. Walker's cartoon, a comical play on words during a sibling dispute, was already featured and can be found on the "Casey and Kyle" website (http:// caseyandkylecomics.com/), posted on February 19.
