OVERVIEW

1.1 ABSTRACT The University of Bremen is a mid-sized university with 250 professorships and 18,000 students, offering a broad range of disciplines and producing internationally competitive top-level research. Just forty years after it was founded, the University of Bremen has risen to the top tier of German universities, ranking especially high in the volume of third-party funding for cutting-edge research. To improve the university’s prominent position, our Institutional Strategy has three overriding development goals: • Firstly, anchoring our high-profile areas firmly in the top league of German and international research: Supported by New Governance structures, Bridge Professorships and Cooperative Junior Research Groups, we will explore new strands of research together with our non-university research partners. • Secondly, fostering our innovative capacity across all disciplines: Exploratory Projects run by individual researchers and small groups collaborating in Creative Units will give additional room for research, and the Development Fund will create long-term development prospects for individual disciplines. • Thirdly, recruiting top-level researchers and supporting their career advancement early on: The Graduate Center offers exemplary support for PhD students, postdocs are provided scope for independent research, and top female professors are recruited proactively through ahead-of-schedule appointments.
