DISTINGUISHED ALUMNI, SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS TO BE HONORED Our annual awards barbecue will be held on Saturday, May 3rd this year at Lower Manning Park in Montecito. This is the perfect chance to affirm your ties to SBHS and to meet 35 deserving scholarship winners from the class of 2014. We will also introduce two Distinguished Alumni, Robert Burtness ‘56 and Dennis Gilles ’76, representatives of the many Don graduates who have made significant contributions to their communities and to their worlds of work. Truly, these two groups represent a combination of accomplishment and promise. In addition to these honorees, we will present a slate of board members who are up for election to the board of directors. We do have occasional vacancies on the board, and all alumni are eligible to join the board; we value new faces and new ideas. Of course, you are always welcome to make direct contact with the board via e-mail or regular postal means.

ROBERT BURTNESS ’56 AND DENNIS GILLES ’76 NAMED DISTINGUISHED ALUMNI FOR 2014 We will be honoring two Distinguished Dons at the SBHS Scholarship BBQ on May 3, 2014. This year's selections are Robert Burtness (Class of 1956) and Dennis Gilles (Class of 1976).

Association, Native Sons of the Golden West, E. Clampus Vitus, and the Santa Barbara Region of the Antique Automobile Club of America. He is a Volunteer Wilderness Ranger and he is one of the devoted members of Bugles Across America and performs Taps at veterans' memorial services. He is married to Lynn (Hammock) Burtness, also Class of 1956, and, together, these two Dons continue to make Santa Barbara a better place to live while they enjoy life to the fullest. We are proud to honor Bob Burtness as a Distinguished Don with deep roots and strong connections to the Santa Barbara community.

ROBERT BURTNESS was born at Cottage Hospital in 1938 and grew up in Santa Barbara. He attended Peabody and Garfield Elementary schools, La Cumbre Junior High and graduated from SBHS in 1956 He went to Claremont McKenna College and upon graduation, he joined the Air Force for five years. He served most memorably in Greece where he bought “. . . a 1957 T-Bird [which] is still a treasured possession.” He was able to explore Europe in fine style. After the Air Force, he went to Chico State and Cal Poly for a master's degree and a teaching credential. Santa Barbara students were most fortunate that Bob Burtness spent the next 30 years teaching foreign language and English at La Cumbre Junior High and San Marcos (gasp!) High School. In fact, he still substitute teaches as he claims to have “failed” retirement. Beyond his professional life, Bob Burtness has graced Santa Barbara as a “volunteer extraordinaire” with a Renaissance Man's wide-ranging interests. He helped to rebuild the Arlington Theatre pipe organ, re-roofed a 100year old back country cabin, and continues to be active in Scouting spending his summers teaching a new generation of naturalists. His love of the backcountry and the Channel Islands revolves around helping others to gain access (trail building), learn about nature, and restoring natural areas to their best state. Bob is truly a man-about-town as he hikes and bikes from one end of Santa Barbara and Goleta to the other volunteering widely in the community. Bob Burtness has written A Camper's Guide to the Tri-County Area, published in 1984. His latest publication caps 20 years of research: “The Santa Barbara B-24 Disasters: A Chain of Tragedies Across Air, Land & Sea,” published in 2012. Bob is an active member and often a board participant of the Westerners, the Pearl Chase Society, the Masons, the Santa Barbara High School Alumni

DENNIS GILLES is a 5th generation Santa Barbaran. His greatgrandmother graduated from SBHS in 1890, in a class of seven. Dennis was born in St. Francis Hospital in 1958 and is the third of five children. He had the good fortune to grow up in Mission Canyon Heights, when it was still very rural and the Botanic Garden was his back yard. Dennis attended Roosevelt Elementary School, Santa Barbara Junior High, and SBHS. Following graduation from SBHS in 1976, he earned an Associate in Arts degree from Santa Barbara City College. From SBCC, he transferred to Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, where he completed his degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1981. During high school and college, Dennis worked at Thrifty Auto Parts on Hollister Ave. He has always enjoyed working on cars and had a 64 Comet and a VW dune buggy. Today he is restoring a 1967 Mustang. Dennis and his wife, Julie have been married for 33 years. They have four daughters who are all college graduates. Their oldest daughter, Suzanne and husband, Keefe, recently presented them with their first grandchild. Since starting his energy sector career in 1981, Dennis has been actively involved in the management, operation, maintenance, engineering, construction and administration of power and petrochemical plants and their related facilities. Upon graduation from Cal Poly, he was

hired by Atlantic Richfield (Arco) and moved to Cerritos. Dennis was Arco's engineer and project manager on a cogeneration plant with Fluor Corporation and Southern California Edison. During his time in Southern California, he completed his Masters in Business Administration at Pepperdine University in 1985. When the co-generation project was completed, Dennis was asked to join with his Edison colleague as project manager building a geothermal power plant in Northern California. When that project was completed, Edison sold the plant to a Swiss corporation and Dennis was hired to be the plant manager. In time, that plant was purchased by Calpine Corporation and Dennis ended up running 21 geothermal power plants and rising to the level of Senior Vice President, overseeing 450 employees. Dennis has held management positions at Atlantic Richfield, Watson Cogeneration Company, and Mission Power Engineering. He is currently the Chief Executive Officer of U.S. Geothermal, Inc., based in Boise, Idaho. His primary activities have included the identification, evaluation, and acquisition of existing renewable projects, as well as heading development of new opportunities. He is also actively involved in the advancement of legislation to stimulate the growth of the geothermal industry. His professional associations have included the recent position of Chairman of the Board of the Geothermal Energy Association and Executive Board Officer of the Geothermal Resource Council.

FORMER SBHS FOOTBALL COACHES HONORED For many SBHS alumni, their fondest memories of high school are the football games. Over the years, many football players have shared with their fellow Dons about their experiences playing football at SBHS and all agreed that the coaches, Sam Cathcart and Mike Moropoulos, played a large part in shaping who they had become as men. Danny Paulin, ’67, thought it would be great to throw a party and let the players tell the coaches in person how much of a lifelong impact they had made on them. So on January 26, 2014 they did just that!

AWARD BARBECUE DETAILS Tickets are $20 and are available for purchase through the mail. Tickets will be held for pick up at the welcome desk at the park. Check-in begins at 11:00 a.m. Lunch served at noon. Checks should be made payable to the SBHS ALUMNI ASSOCIATION and mailed to P.O. BOX 6121, SANTA BARBARA, CA 93160 -6121. Tickets can also be purchased in person at the high school through PATTI DIAZ, the principal’s secretary, Ph. 805-966-9101. Tickets must be purchased by Friday, April 25th.

Tracking down as many former players from that era as he could, Danny pulled together an impressive number of Dons that spanned the years from the 1960 CIF Championship team to 1973. Some of the “younger players” had an opportunity to get to meet some of the “older players” who had been their SBHS football heroes and idols growing up. Players and guests in attendance included Scott, Steve, Tommy, and Sammy Cathcart; Tommy, Rick and Ron Glass with their parents and loyal Dons supporters, Ruby and George Glass; Augie and David Morelos; Bob, John, and Dennis Rickard; Manuel Robledo, Frank Galindo, Jeff Jameson, Edker Mathews, Vince Uribe, Jack Rogers, Bobby Garcia, Dan Gallagher, Don Haws, Daryl Scare, Bob Brown, Steve Lopez, Danny Dominguez, Mike Rossi, Augie Rapanut, Joby Nuñez, Adrian Munneman, James Edwards, John Avila, Bobby Correa, Richie Sanchez, Art Korngiebel, Ernie Keener, Danny Paulin, Mark Mendillo, Tom Hord, Bobby Marquez, George Tabata, Al Reginatto, Mike Fryer, Bud Spencer, Russ Carter, Mike Tsoutsouvas (Chooch), Keith Wright, Randy Viscarra, Billy Hames, and Booker Brown with wife Jackie and son Cleo. Also in attendance were Young Life leader, Jake Coss, former San Marcos coach John Stoney, and SBCC coach Bob Dinaberg.

We have been very fortunate in the past to have our alumni pay for the students’ BBQ meal ticket. If you wish to participate, simply indicate the number of student tickets you would like to underwrite. You may use the donation form on the last page of this newsletter to place your order. The students are made aware of the donors of their tickets, and we encourage them to express their thanks. BOARD MEMBERS TO BE ELECTED AT THE AWARDS BBQ

We offer the following slate of candidates for consideration at our annual meeting:

Booker Brown, ‘70 led off the festivities with a prayer and a brief speech, thanking the coaches on behalf of all the players for the positive influence they had made on their lives. The day was spent catching up and reliving great memories, while 1960 CIF Champion teammates, Manuel Robledo and Frank Galindo worked their magic on the BBQ grill. All the guys agreed it was a special day spent

Gloria Cavallero ’72, Norma (Perez) Marquez ’68, Sharon (Keinath) Henning ’74, Jeanette Arnoldi-Schall ’67, Barbra Ortiz ’69, Spencer Barr ’00, Helen Cornell ’52, Tim Putz ’63, Philip Unander ’69, Kay (Saruwatari) Van Horn ’54, Vicki (Nishihara) Woolford ’69, Rebecca Bucklew Borgioli ‘91.

with people who meant so much to them. In a note the next day, George Tabata, ’69 wrote, “Thanks for arranging such a memorable and fun event yesterday. What a success. It was wonderful to see old friends and former teammates and great to see two men who had such an impact on my life.”

students and the community. Students in the Leadership Class vote for 5 and the Alumni Board also votes for 5. The top 5 vote-receivers are the recipients for the year. Students then research each alumnus and contact family members. They also produce the slide presentation for the assembly induction. Ward Kimball ’32 was an animator for the Walt Disney Studios and was one of Walt Disney’s animators known as Disney’s Nine Old Men. Kimball created several of the classic Disney characters, including Tweedledee and Tweedledum, the Mad Hatter, the Cheshire Cat and Jiminy Cricket from Pinocchio. Ward was a railroad enthusiast and is credited with inspiring Walt Disney to install the Disney Railroad. Engine No. 5 of the Disney Railroad is named the “Ward Kimball” in his memory. Ward won an Academy Award Oscar for his animated short, It’s Tough To Be a Bird. He was also a jazz trombonist and led a 7piece Dixieland Band. Ward was a Distinguished Alumnus in 1992 and upon receiving the honor reminisced how SBHS had been his “haven” where he had been allowed and encouraged to draft and cartoon. He passed away in 2002, his Wall of Fame award was given posthumously.

Coaches Cathcart and Moropoulos definitely seemed to enjoy the get together as evidenced by their joyful looks of recognition as the players greeted them individually, taking that opportunity to let the coaches know just how much they meant to them. Judging from the pictures, it’s hard to tell who was having more fun, the players or the coaches. As much as the coaches appreciated the kind words, these ever humble coaches both agreed that it was a pleasure to have been their coaches and that it was the players themselves who had had a positive impact on them, saying, “You guys are the ones who made it fun to come to work every day!”

Jack Hufford ’51 has dedicated his boundless energy and time to volunteering countless hours at SBHS and at other local schools. He, along with John Campilio ’53 raised monies necessary to carry out the painstaking restoration of the front and side façade entrances at our Alma Mater. He then managed the professional workers and personally worked with students, teaching them skills and mentoring them in the value of volunteering and giving back to SBHS. For this restoration work alone, Jack was given the first Frederick Forest Peabody Award by the SBHS Alumni Association. In addition, Jack had flags made which fly on the JR Richards Gymnasium. Jack is a loyal Don who will tackle just about anything he sees needs repairing at SBHS and always maintains his wonderful sense of humor in the process.

In the end, what it all comes down to, in the words of Don Pearson, ’68 who was unable to attend but sent this note: “It was a big deal to be a Santa Barbara Don and it was an absolute privilege and an honor to wear the Olive and Gold.” Few would argue that point. John Campilio ’53, former ASB President in his senior year and former teacher is a Distinguished Alumnus. He was instrumental in obtaining SBHS’s historical landmark status in 2005 and worked diligently on the Veterans’ Memorial in front of the gym. He is a Past President of the Alumni Association, heading up and writing the Alumni Newsletter for 20 plus years. He is an avid fan of baseball and is an active member of Ye Ole Dons Athletic Boosters. He is a major supporter of the SBHSAA Scholarship Program, creating the Michelle Humboldt Scholarship and the John Pasquotto Honorary Scholarship Fund. He is also a major contributor to the Class of ’53 Scholarship as well as anything SBHS. He and Jack Hufford ’51 are a team to be reckoned with! John has given time, energy and love to SBHS, where he claims he was his happiest.

FIVE ALUMNI ADDED TO THE WALL OF FAME

The 13th annual SBHSAA’s Wall of Fame induction took place at a student assembly in the auditorium on March 14th. The five newly inducted alumni will join 60 other Wall of Fame recipients who already have their pictures and biographies in the Main Hall. This year’s recipients are Ward Kimball ’32, Jack Hufford ’51, John Campilio ’53, Stephen Benton ’59 and Bill Oliphant ’64. Recipients, students and guests were welcomed by Evely Jimenez ’14, Wall of Fame student committee chair, Laine Fisher ’14, ASB President, and William Belfiore ’15, newly elected ASB President who emceed the event.

Stephen Benton ’59, was a top student at SBHS and distinguished himself in the sciences. Stephen won the local Science Fair and went on to the State Fair in Los Angeles where his experiment in light bending was noticed by Dr. Edwin Land of Polaroid Land fame. Stephen was the

winner of the 18th annual Westinghouse Science Talent Search-an extremely high honor, chosen from a national group of thousands of students. He attended Massachusetts Institute of Technology, graduated in 1963 in electrical engineering. During his time at MIT Stephen began focusing on photographic, optical research and stroboscopy. He completed his Masters and PhD, both from Harvard and then taught classes at MIT. He held 14 patents in optical physics and photography. Stephen’s landmark work in fine arts holography and medical imaging is worldrenowned, however, he is best known for his invention of the rainbow hologram—the foil security on every credit card and license. This hologram is known as the Benton hologram! You may recall the hologram of the dove on the cover of National Geographic Magazine—that was Stephen’s. Dr. Benton passed away in 2003. Stephen’s brother, Christopher Benton ’64, accepted the award on his brother’s behalf and planned to send it to Stephen’s widow in Massachusetts.

refuge as Johnathon could hang out at the playground while Roberto worked on his basketball shooting drills. Although Johnathon was in foster home care, he often ate dinner, hung out and spent the night at his friend's house. During their years at SBHS, Roberto played football and basketball for the Dons and Johnathon was a Dons football and basketball student team manager. He was also Roberto's biggest fan and supporter. His support and friendship became crucial when Roberto's father was arrested and convicted for a serious and very wellpublicized crime in Roberto's senior year. Roberto recoiled from the publicity and the news reporters and stayed out of school for a month. Now it was Johnathon taking homework home for Roberto and staying to talk to his friend in a dark time. Roberto was recruited by Craig Robinson, the Oregon State University coach, and asked Johnathon to come to Oregon with him. He thought they could help each other get through this college thing together. It took a year but Johnathon joined Roberto in Corvallis. Johnathon enrolled in a junior college, became a fixture at OSU Beaver practices, and settled in to life as a college student with Roberto and his roommates. He is currently an OSU Business Major and Beavers student team manager. Oh, yes---and Jonathon plays basketball, too. The Beavers coach and team members cheered him on to his first gold medal in the Special Olympics basketball tournament just months ago! Roberto will, hopefully, be joining the NBA. Johnathon will remain in Oregon until he graduates and, then, the sky's the limit for these two Dons. The “end of the story,” as Paul Harvey would say, is that a scholarship, initiated by an SBHS faculty member, is being set up in the name of these two Dons alumni: The Johnathon Hoover & Roberto Nelson Scholarship Fund. As one of the SBHS 60s cheers goes: “We are the Dons and we couldn't be prouder. Say it again and we'll yell a little louder!”

Bill Oliphant ’64 is a second generation Don. He played both basketball and baseball for SBHS and while at SBCC was asked to help coach at the Dolores School. He was hooked! Soon after, he was the JV Baseball coach and then moved to Frosh-Soph Baseball where he has remained for the last 20+ years. He taught on the SBHS Faculty for many years and when he retired in 2008 he stayed on as “Coach.” The Santa Barbara Junior High baseball field was recently named Oliphant Field, the field he has called home for many years. Many of his former players turned out for the dedication of the field where he had coached hundreds of Donlets in baseball and mentored them in how to groom and take care of the fields. Bill has served as a Director on the SBHS Alumni Association’s Board. Scholarship to honor DONS “Brothers” Roberto Nelson and Johnathon Hoover Roberto Nelson was a stand-out basketball star at SBHS and his best friend then, as he had been since junior high, was Johnathon Hoover. Roberto Nelson graduates in June 2014 from Oregon State University and will be heading to the NBA draft. Johnathon Hoover will remain in Corvallis to complete his college education fulfilling a promise made to his dying adopted father, a decade earlier. This “hometown friends make good” story covers more territory than that between Santa Barbara and Corvallis. It helps to know that Johnathon Hoover was born Johnathon Green with cerebral palsy, his father rejected him “as a cripple,” his mother was an addict, and his grandmother, who raised him from infancy, died when he was four. A family friend, James Hoover adopted him at age 6. Hoover helped him through physical therapy, his first steps, and the six surgeries he had had by 6th grade. Johnathon called James Hoover, “Dad” and took Hoover as his own last name. On Jonathon's second day of junior high, Hoover was diagnosed with lung cancer and died not long after. That is when Johnathon promised to graduate from college. The day after James Hoover's death, a casual friend and classmate, Roberto Nelson, delivered Johnathon's homework and told Johnathon that he was always welcome at his home. The friendship became a

SBJHS Field Dedicated to Coach Bill Oliphant ’64 JV

DONATIONS We have received many generous donations in support of our various Scholarships and Programs. The letters and notes which accompany the donations testify to a lifelong commitment to classmates and to the high school. We are humbled to see how lasting an influence the SBHS years have made on the donors. Thank you all for your continued support.

Bill Oliphant ’64 longtime SBHS teacher and JV Baseball coach was honored with the official naming of the Santa Barbara Junior High School baseball –Oliphant Field. His present team was in full uniform and many of Bill’s past team members were in attendance. At the ceremony presided over by John Becchio, SBHS Principal, Bill reminisced about growing up on the Westside, Laguna Park, and his years as a student, 35 year teacher and coach at SBHS. Bill retired from teaching in 2008, but has continued to coach dozens of Donlets. Bill thanked the SBHS, SB Unified School District, Fred Warrecker, Varsity Coach and the many Dons he has come in contact with over his years in coaching. “Every great teacher is also a coach,” Superintendent David Cash told the attendees. “The educators amongst us understand that, not only has he been a great coach but a great teacher, influencing lives inside and outside the classroom.”

Frank was a wholehearted booster of many civic activities in Santa Barbara, a founding member of the Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table, a charter member of the Alumni Association and he also served on the Semana Nautica Committee. Frank was the unofficial historian for SBHS Athletics. His professional work saw him as a bookkeeper and comptroller for two businesses in Santa Barbara. Frank is survived by his wife of 61 years, Betty Fong Swain ’50. Frank’s final years were difficult, but Betty was always supportive and escorted Frank on his trips around town. Together they shared the pain of their daughter Catherine’s recent death. The Alumni Association honored Frank as a Distinguished Alumni Award winner in 1998. The association is also accepting donations for a scholarship in Frank’s memory. SGT Walter D. Ehlers (May 7, 1921 – February 20, 2014) Recipient of the US armed forces' highest decoration, the Medal of Honor, for his actions in World War II during the D-Day Normandy Invasion, Ehlers was the keynote speaker at the dedication of our Veteran’s Memorial in 1998. His speech, to a large audience of community members and SBHS students, was a heartfelt message about the cost of defending our freedoms. His own brother, Roland, died at Omaha Beach during the D-Day operation. He spoke directly to the students, emphasizing the fact that all of the names on the memorial belonged to students who had shared their lives at SBHS through athletics, friendships and high school social life. A copy of the speech, preserved on a plaque, is set on wall space in the hallway next to the WWII service banner.

The FORGE turns 100! The first issue of The Forge came out on October 14, 1914. One hundred years later, on October 14, 2014 another issue of The Forge will hit the halls of SBHS. The staff of The Forge will be holding an assembly for students on Friday, October 17. The Alumni Association will be honoring our newspaper and the thousands of “Forgers” by hosting a “Forge Centennial Celebration” OPEN HOUSE on Saturday, October 18, 2014 from 2-5 p.m., with a brief program at 3 p.m. in the auditorium. Campus tours (including the many rooms used by Forge staffers over the years) will be given by current SBHS students and there will be displays of Forge and SBHS memorabilia. Please spread the word about this celebration to your friends and classmates! We are especially asking for former Forge staffers and editors to send the Alumni Association an email or letter with your current contact information as well as your special memories of working on The Forge. What were the “issues” of your high school years that were important? Was censorship ever a problem? (Yes, now you can tell all!) Did working on The Forge make a difference to your career or college path? What are your special memories of The Forge and SBHS? Did your Forge advisor make an impact on your life? Do you have any funny stories about getting out that paper every week? Send your emails to [email protected] or to the SBHS Alumni Association, PO Box. 6121, Santa Barbara, CA 93160-6121. We want to hear from you! PAST ALUMNI NEWSLETTER EDITOR SAYS THANKS Dear Fellow Alumni, I want to say thank you for your energetic and generous support of the Alumni Association’s many efforts on behalf of SBHS and her students. It was a pleasure – plus some hard work – first, to cooperate with Dorothy Westfall Brubeck on the production of the newsletter and, second, to continue as editor until last year. The newsletter is the main form of communication between the Alumni Board and our graduates. The Board is always concerned to allocate your support to improve the school. We also depend on you for information about alumni, individually and as classes. It was an honor to serve as editor.

We are still offering electronic access to the newsletter. Look at http://sbhs.tierranet.com to see if that mode works for you. Contact us at [email protected] if you want us to take you off our regular mailing list. We will save money, and you will receive the letter faster via email.

Sincerely, John Campilio, ‘53

The Santa Barbara High School Alumni Association sends heartfelt sympathies to the Johnson Family, on the tragic loss of their son, and one of our Dons, Nicholas ’12. Nicholas was a stand-out Varsity Water Polo player at SBHS. He was a member of the UCSB Gaucho Water Polo team and was doing what he loved-- swimming. He was working out th at the SBHS pool on March 24 , when he died at the age of 19. He leaves behind his parents, Karen and Berkeley “Augie”, brothers: Sam ’14 a member of our Water Polo team, Cooper ’16 a SBHS Volleyball player and sister Sophie, a student at Montecito Union School. Former Olympic swimming coach, Russ Hafferkamp ’72, wrote on our Alumni website, “You would have to look very hard to find another kid as great as Nick.” Mark Walsh, SBHS Water Polo coach said, “Nick will not be remembered for a goal he scored, a pass he made or a center he shut down, but for his dedication, desire and heart.” A scholarship in Nick’s memory is pending.

IN SEARCH OF DISTINCTION

DON DOINGS

Each year the Associated Student Body and your Alumni Association strive to honor former alumni who have left their mark on the world. We attempt to acknowledge their efforts and accomplishment by adding their name to The Wall of Fame or adding them to our list of Distinctive Alumni. While there are probably many who deserve this honor, we never hear of them until we read their obituary. Unfortunately they are gone and the opportunity to give them the recognition they so rightly deserve has been lost. We would like to acquire your assistance in identifying those who have become outstanding in their field of endeavor, have contributed to the well-being of their fellowman or who have developed or discovered things that we all have enjoyed. Perhaps one of your classmates has become someone we admire for their gift to society. Please help us by submitting their name/s, a possible source of contact and a brief description of why you feel they should be honored. One never knows; you may become one of those nominated. We thank those of you who respond. Send the data to: SBHS Alumni Assoc. P O Box 6121, Santa Barbara, CA 93160-6121.

Goleta City Councilman, Roger Aceves, class of ’73, makes a run for supervisor of Santa Barbara Second District with the race being decided by the voters in the June 3 election. Justin Fareed, class of ‘06 is running for Congress. Justin is a Republican and one of eight challengers in the 24th Congressional District. (Lois Capps is the incumbent.) Justin was a running back for the Dons and the Bruins. He majored in political science and has worked in a family business as well as a congressional staffer. Karen Campbell, class of ’73, founder of Community Counts, an organization connecting nonprofits and volunteers, served as the keynote speaker at the Fourth Annual UCLA Nonprofit Networking Night hosted by the Undergraduate Student Council’s Community Service Commission. The Community Environmental Council recently welcomed Laura Burton Capps’90, to their Board of Directors. Laura was also recently appointed to the Santa Barbara County Commission for Women.

THE ART OF MAKING DONATIONS

Ruth Kallman, class of ’48, helped celebrate the Alpha Resource Center’s 60th Anniversary and their work with developmentally disabled children. She and her late husband Bob have been long time contributors and ardent supporters of the Center, helping to acquire the Center’s present facility back in the 60’s.

Many times over the years, we have been asked how one makes a donation to the Alumni Association or how one might create a scholarship. The donation can be accomplished in two ways--either as a gift of funds or as a gift of an investment. If the gift is of funds already in cash form, it can be made by check, cash or money order. When it is an investment, it can be made as a transfer from your brokerage account to our account. This procedure has benefits in two ways depending on whether you have a gain or loss in the investment. If you have a Capital Gain in the investment it is best to transfer the investment itself and assume the full current value as a charitable contribution. However, if you have a Capital Loss it is best to sell the investment and assume the full loss on your taxes. Our scholarships are held in two types, either as a Perpetual or as a Non-Perpetual scholarship. Scholarships may be in honor of a relative, a teacher, a friend or a class. Quite a few of our Classes have established Perpetual Scholarships. A Perpetual Scholarship must have sufficient funds to earn at least a $500.00 scholarship each year and will be combined with another to make the total of the $1,000.00 scholarship. A Non-Perpetual scholarship may be in any amount and is given in the calendar year after the donation is received. Those scholarships may be set up to provide a scholarship for more than one year depending on the amount donated. Should you have other questions, our Treasurer, Norma Marquez, would be more than happy to assist you. In 1976, the first year we awarded scholarships, we gave two $150.00 scholarships. In 2012 we gave 41 $1,000.00 scholarships and in 2013 it was 38 because of low interest rates. There will be $35,000.00 given out this spring to deserving Dons! So far we have assisted 717 Dons obtain a future education. No brag, just facts!

Owner of Carpinteria’s Rose Story Farm, Danielle (Dani) Dall’Armi Hahn ‘70, was selected as the 2014 honoree for Great Rosarian of the World, a lecture series started by the Huntington Botanical Gardens to honor notable rosarians and provide them with a forum to present their work to a broader American audience. Class of 2009 graduate and SBHSAA Scholarship recipient, Edith Rodriquez, recently represented Santa Barbara City College in accepting the Aspen Prize for Community College Excellence from Second Lady of the United States Jill Biden in our nation’s capital. SBCC was named top community college in the country. Well known for her bird expertise, Joan Easton Lentz‘60 has written the first comprehensive nature guide of our area in her newest book, “A Naturalist’s Guide to the Santa Barbara Region.” Originally printed in 1974, Santa Barbara’s Spanish Renaissance & Old Spanish Days Fiesta, by Stella Haverland Rouse, class of ’25, has been reprinted by her daughter Shirley Rouse Roby, class of ’60 and her granddaughter Leslie Roby Ervin. The 78-page book summarizes Santa Barbara’s early historical, sociological and cultural backgrounds as an explanation of the town’s unique aesthetic and architectural development in the early 20th century. The book also covers the early beginnings of Old Spanish Days Fiesta and can be purchased at local bookstores or online at [email protected].

NEW SOFTBALL SCOREBOARD

Past Forges and Olive & Gold yearbooks were recently donated to the Alumni Association’s memorabilia and archive collection by the daughter of Madeline Borgaro Naretto, class of ’35. In addition, several Santa Barbara Junior High School yearbooks were gifted to the junior high’s library, whose librarian happily accepts old yearbook donations to their archive collection.

A big thank you to Charlie Alva who donated the first digital scoreboard for SBHS softball! There was an unveiling ceremony at the field on March 5 before the girls played their first home game. The board is dedicated to the memory of Charlie's late wife Vera Ralston and is the first solar powered scoreboard on the California coastline.

Maureen (Mo) MacQuiddy Masson’53 and SBHSAA Board member, and Patty Davis Ottoboni ’53 were recently featured in the Montecito Journal, recalling fond childhood memories of growing up in the early days of Montecito and time spent at the historic Montecito Home Club, which eventually was taken over by the YMCA. Once again this year, the SBHS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) availed IRS-certified student volunteers to help individuals and families file their federal income tax returns at no cost. VITA, which is run through the student-employed business, Dons Net Café, marks its 20th anniversary and was the first school in the nation to be awarded an EFIN (Electronic Filing Identification Number) by the IRS. SBHS senior, Johnny Weger’s Chalk Talk presentation on, “What is a Cubic Function?” advanced to the finals as part of the 27th annual High School Mathematics Contest at Westmont College.
