Previewing the 2007 Season Quoting Head Coach Tommy Tuberville The Offense “Overall, I think the offense has a lot of stability in some areas and is very unstable in others. We have a pretty good idea going into two-a-days that there is going to be a lot of movement the first couple of weeks of practice on the offensive side. We have a lot of true freshmen we are bringing in who might play – Quindarius Carr at wide receiver and several of the offensive linemen. Lee Ziemba is one who we could look at at tackle. We’re looking at several of the young guys and a lot of competition in two-a-days.”

Quarterbacks “The quarterback position is one of our highlights on offense with a returning starter in Brandon Cox. He has had a good career. His junior season wasn’t what he wanted in terms of being physically 100 percent for the whole season, but I think Brandon grew up a lot. He led our team to 11 victories, and that is a big accomplishment for a team in this conference. He beat some good teams. Last year he played around 190-200 pounds. This year he’ll play from 200-210, adding weight and muscle. “It’s a toss up for the backup. Blake Field is the heir apparent, but he’s being chased by Neil Caudle and Steven Ensminger. Kodi Burns will come in as a true freshman, so there will be a lot of competition in two-a-days.”

Running Backs “We are still running back by committee. We don’t have a true starter. I think the guy who made the biggest move in spring practice was Mario Fannin. I thought he showed some signs that he could be a starter.

“Brad Lester obviously has been there and done that. He’s been injury prone, but he’s put on weight. Ben Tate is still in a growing process after playing in his first year. He looked pretty good in the spring. “Tristan Davis is going to be a special type of guy who will be played in certain situations. I’m really excited about his improvement and carryover after playing running back and going over to defense, then coming back to running back. “Carl Stewart will be our utility man along with Danny Perry, Danny being more a true fullback. Carl catches the ball well. He’ll play fullback in certain situations and he’ll play tailback in certain situations. If you look back to last year at the games we were successful in, Carl was a big-play guy for us and we expect more of that this year.”

Wide Receivers “The guy coming back who has made the most progress is Rodgeriqus Smith. He had a great spring, but we need other guys to step up. “James Swinton needs this to be the year for him to make a move. Montez Billings had one of the better springs of any of the receivers. Prechae Rodriguez will have a big battle with Montez in two-a-days. “Robert Dunn is a guy who will be our inside slot receiver. I think he has grown up a lot and made a lot of progress. Tim Hawthorne is a guy that we still don’t know a lot about after missing a lot of spring practice because of a car accident. He needs to work on his initial move out of the line of scrimmage with his quickness and speed, but he is going to be a good football player for us.”

Tight Ends “The tight end position is one of our better positions right now in terms of experience with Cole Bennett coming back for his fifth year after having an ankle injury last year. He should add leadership and experience to that position that was taken over by Tommy Trott and Gabe McKenzie. They both have experience after being thrown into the lineup after Cole’s injury. “Both Tommy and Gabe have made tremendous strides. Gabe is really coming on as a blocker and has improved on his catching, so we are going to have a three-way spin at tight end. I think these guys will be three of the best in the country with what we are going to do with them.”

Offensive Line

Brandon Cox

36

“The offensive line is obviously a concern after losing four starters. Andrew McCain, who had a good spring, and Antwoin Daniels are really going to fight it out for a starting position. Leon Hart and Nathan Farrow will battle. Leon has bounced around, but I think we have a position for him now. He is going to stay at guard. He’s a senior and has a chance to be an excellent player. “Tyronne Green is a first-time starter, and Byron Isom is behind him. Tyronne is a defensive

2007 AUBURN FOOTBALL

Carl Stewart

player who moved to offense, similar to Ben Grubbs. He is very similar in terms of physical ability, and he has the desire. Now we just have to see if he can get the job done as a starter. “King Dunlap and Oscar Gonzalez, it’s just a toss up there. King has a lot of experience, but Oscar made a big move at that spot to get that position. There will be a chance that they will move back and forth during two-a-days. “Jason Bosley and Mike Berry will be at center with Leon Hart giving us a third center. Jason had the best spring and summer of any player that we have on the offensive line in terms of leadership, determination, desire and wanting to get better.”

The Defense “We have a lot of speed and quickness. We are going to have a lot of opportunities for young guys to step up and play. This is going to be a young defense, but with Quinton Groves, Josh Thompson and Eric Brock, we have three guys who can be true senior leaders for us. I think the defense has a really good chance to grow quicker than the offense, because we don’t have as much experience on the offensive side. I like the makeup of the defense.”

Defensive Line “We are a four-man front team. We will play a lot of three-man fronts when we get in blitzing situations. Going into the season, our front four is going to move back and forth. We moved Sen’Derrick Marks to defensive end but he’ll be more of a defensive tackle most of the time. “There is going to be a lot of experimentation with the defensive front going into two-a-days with Pat Sims, Mike Blanc, Tez Doolittle and Josh Thompson with Zach Clayton moving inside starting two-a-days. “Quentin Groves obviously is a playmaker who will move around in different situations. I

Previewing the 2007 Season redshirted last year like Zac Etheridge, who I think will step up and make progress and give us depth at the strong safety position where we have a senior coming back in Eric Brock. Eric had a good spring. He continues to grow in this defense where we ask the strong safety to do a lot. Growing up at that position is going to be very beneficial. Eric has a lot of ability. “At the free safety position, Aairon Savage had a good spring. He was really a first-year player last year and is coming into his own as a sophomore. I think he can be a heck of a player in this league, but experience is going to be a factor. “Patrick Lee is one of our few seniors, along with Jonathan Wilhite. They are two corners who have experience, but again they are growing up in this system. I think this can be a strong position for us as long as we can find backups, like Walter McFadden and Zach Gilbert with Jerraud Powers coming off shoulder surgery after the bowl game.” Quentin Groves

think Quentin is one of the most talented players in the country, not just in our conference. He has a big future after college. It’s a credit to him and his family that he decided to come back and continue to improve and upgrade his status as a better player in the country. I think he’ll be an All-America candidate from every side. “Michael Goggans playing defensive end last year really helped us solidify the situation where he had the opportunity to help us with our depth. He has a chance of being an every-down lineman. I also thought Antonio Coleman had a good spring. “The front four is an integral part of what we do defensively. We have some young guys coming in. I think Pat Sims and Mike Blanc are going to be very important in terms of being a force and making plays on both sides of the line of scrimmage. Mike Blanc has made a lot of strides. That allowed Sen’Derrick Marks to go out and play some defensive end, but you are going to see Sen’Derrick play tackle again this year.”

Linebackers “With the ineligibility of Patrick Trahan, that throws us into a situation where we have to find more depth and more experience. We felt good coming out of spring practice with Merrill Johnson and Steve Gandy coming off injuries. Craig Stevens made a lot of progress. “Chris Evans is a young guy and it’s time for him to step up along with Courtney Harden. We’ll look at some changes, maybe moving someone over from another position, or we’ll also look at Josh Bynes and Eltoro Freeman, some young freshmen coming in. “It’s a concern experience-wise. It’s not a concern talent-wise. We just have to get the right players in the right positions. At linebacker it’s going to be a rebuilding process anyway.”

Secondary “I think the secondary can be a strength of our defense. We have some young guys who we

Special Teams “Special teams is going to be a major challenge for us. It’s going to continue to be that way going through two-a-days. It was a challenge in spring practice and it’s going to be more of a challenge during two-a-days because there have really been no decisions made on who is going to be our punter, kicker or kickoff man. “Ross Gornall finished up the spring as our placekicker. I think he’s the only guy who we really felt confident could get the job done coming out of spring practice. Wes Byrum, a true freshman, will come in this summer and start working toward being a possible candidate, but you don’t know enough about freshmen until you get them here. He reminds me a lot of John Vaughn. We’re not afraid to play true freshmen, but we’re going to let the best kicker work it out. “Ryan Shoemaker is the heir apparent coming out of spring practice as our punter. I thought he had a god spring, not a great spring. He has a lot of room for improvement, but right now it looks like he is our starter going in until someone proves otherwise. “Our holder Matthew Motley is coming back. Our deep snapper is Robert Shiver. I think he had a good spring. He has worked there before, and he has done a good job for us. “We have to really concentrate on our return teams next year. With the new kickoff rule from the 30-yard line, I think the starting point should be somewhere between the 30 and 35-yard line for most of your offensive series. Your kickoff return team is going to be very important, and we will work on that a lot next year, and we will work a lot on our kickoff coverage team. “Our punt returners and kickoff returners are really up in the air with Tristan Davis being a big candidate for most of it along with Mario Fannin and Patrick Lee. Robert Dunn was our punt returner coming out of spring, but I think Mario Fannin has a chance to be a guy who can also do it. We’ll look at some young guys coming in from our redshirt group.”

Schedule “The schedule is going to be one of the most competitive that we’ve had since we’ve been here or since I’ve been a head coach or an assistant. We have two very tough non-conference games to open up with, then a very competitive conference schedule with our Western Division opponents. The four teams we’ll play on the road, will, at some point, probably be in the top 10 or top 15 in the country. It’s going to be a challenging schedule on and off the road. “It’s going to be a very good schedule for our fans, and it’s going to be a challenge for our players. They know that and talk about it, but we’re looking forward to that challenge.”

The Team “Overall I think we have a solid team. I think we have good talent. There are some key positions where we don’t have a lot of depth or experience. That’s what practice is for and that’s what playing games is for.”

Priorities Going Into Two-A-Days “We want to work on our depth. As we always do and as we did in spring practice, we want to evaluate our young freshmen very early and try to get them in the positions we need them to play. We want to get them to a point where we feel like they are confident in what they are doing. “Again, the challenges are going to be our offensive line and at linebackers on defense. Every position is going to be a challenge, but those are the positions where we feel like there is more catch up to do with special teams being the No. 1 priority. We have so much work to do it is going to be an endless process.”
