Allegheny County Office Building Green Roof

In 2009, Eisler Landscapes, in collaboration with Civil and Environmental Consultants, Inc., IDC Architects and Cuddy Roofing, was selected to create a series of 4735 Butler Street educational demonstration green roofs for the Allegheny County Office Building. Pittsburgh, PA 15201 Eisler Landscapes was responsible for the site analysis, landscape design and final master plan, as well as the installation and maintenance of the green roof. The project consisted of four separate types of green roofs; intensive, semi-intensive, extensive and an extensive tray system.

The placement and orientation of these systems was based on the structural limitations of the building and existing roof structure. Existing environmental conditions such as sun exposure, wind, location and building facilities were also considered. Page 1

The goal has been to create a natural community park connected to the river and to the existing riverfront trail systems, and to protect and expand the unique ecosystem on site. Eisler Landscapes has supported this vision and worked with the community and designers to build a unique park.

Eisler crews restored the beloved duck Pittsburgh, PA 15232 pond, including planting lilies and reestablishing historic paths around the pond. They participated in the award-winning restoration of the Gate House, an effort lead by Sota Construction, by re-grading the surrounding landscape, building stacked stone walls and installing fresh foundation and decorative plantings. Other work on campus included dealing with steep terrain, planting vegatative screens, laying brick donor walks, planting trees and installing new planting beds. Gates Science Center

Carnegie Mellon University

As part of a $130 million project at CMU, the landscaping at the Gates Science Center, designed by Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates, Inc. increased greenspace 500 Forbes Avenue on the site from 52,209 s.f. to 120,100 s.f. Completed in 2009, this project included Pittsburgh, PA 15213 multiple green roofs and rain gardens on a topographically challenging 5.6 acres in the heart of CMU’s urban campus. The landscaping includes the new West Quad, the Kraus Winter Garden, nearly 300 trees arranged in groves, and more than 2,000 new shrubs. Eisler Landscapes used engineered soils to create naturalistic contours and elevation changes. Native plants, and rare to unusual plants were used extensively throughout the site and were sourced by Eisler Landscapes. Page 1

Intense layout work commenced in order to create naturalistic contours on a flat roof. Grading stakes were used to accurately create the designed contours. Grading quickly became the largest part of the project. Two art installations were included in the project-the French Curve to honor Posner, and a quote from the philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein. Fore Systems, Inc.

When Fore Systems, Inc. built an avantgarde headquarters to convey their high tech, cutting edge image, landscaping was a big part of the plan. The sheer size 3000 Ericsson Drive, of the site-three buildings, 100,000 square feet each, on 35 acres was a challenge: Warrendale, PA 15086 the plan costed out to double the budget. Working with the landscape architects, GWSM of Pittsburgh, we carefully scrutinized the unique design and recommened reductions in the volume of plantings without losing impact, which allowed us to cut costs by 40 percent. The massive undertaking included acres of topsoil work, craning in a boulder field, and seeding over 1,000,000 s.f. of lawn and slopes. Plantings were executed with precision. A total of 2,500 barberrys, 300 trees, and 7,000 ornamentalgrasses were installed to create the spare, high tech landscape that completes the site of Fore System’s cutting edge headquarters in Cranberry Township.

A Leed registered building, the Sara Heinz House was designed Rothchild Doyno Architects in conjunction with Pashek Associates, Landscape Architects. 1 Heinz Street Completed in 2007, the site includes student vegetable gardens and educational Pittsburgh, PA 15212 garden plots. Native plantings not only beautify the site, but serve as part of a rainwater mitigation system. Rainwater harvested from the roof and stored in underground cisterns is used to provide supplemental irrigation for the site. Wildflowers, cover crops, and shrubs were chosen for their nativity as well as their low maintenance habits. Cobblestone pavers and over 17,000 s.f. of stabilized aggregate also reduce run-off in hardscape areas. A handicap ramp was also integrated into the site, along with unique stone benches custom made and installed by Eisler Landscapes. Page 1

The garden was designed with a capacity of 29,174 gallons, enough to manage all of the runoff from a 60-minute, 1 year storm event, and is outperforming this design criteria. Native plants and cultivars were used in the design and were specifically selected to attract pollenators, birds and butterflies for study by students at the nearby public schools. Project scope included the creation of renderings and marketing colleratal for construction signage and informational brochures.

Trinity Episcopal Cathedral

Working with a design by Andropogon Associates, Ltd. Eisler Landscapes was honored to contribute to the historic restoration of this site in downtown 328 Sixth Avenue Pittsburgh. Working on the church yard and building exterior, Eisler Landscapes Pittsburgh, PA 15222 rebuilt the stone entrances, and installed new rainwater infiltration basins, native plantings, cut stone pathways, lighting and seating. While working at a busy, occupied site is always challenging, this downtown church and burial ground was especially sensitive. A burial ground for Native Americans before becoming an Anglican cemetery in 1787, this small site contains over 4,000 burials. The current church was built in 1872. Eisler’s crews worked side by side with members of the University of Pennsylvania’s Historic Conservation laboratory as they completed the grave marker restoration process, and we worked hard to insure that the sacred nature of this historic site was respected throughout the construction process.

A community effort, this garden was supported by local garden clubs, physicians, board members, employees, community members and patients. One hundred percent of the funds for construction came from donations. The garden was designed by Jennifer Deemer, MLA, ALSA of Eisler Landscapes and built by Eisler Landscapes. The garden includes 1,188 sf of patio space, a 16 foot fountain, and multiple seating areas. The garden is surrounded by 2,740 sf of lush planting beds to screen the noise and views of the hospital entrance. Planting includes 6 varieties of trees, 10 varieties of shrubs, perennials and vines.
