All you need is love! The Beatles’ song ‘All you need is love’ is very fitting in this month, as we mark St Valentines's Day. If love is all we need, what does real love look like? Paul describes it like this: ‘Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonour others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices in the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.’ (1 Corinthians 13: 4-8). Love is unconditional: The agenda of one bride on her wedding day was ‘aisle-altar-hymn’ (think about it!). Entering into love on the basis of changing the other person is dangerous! Paul talks about loving unconditionally, rooted in our experience of God’s love through Christ for us: ‘We love, because he first loved us.’ (1 John 4:19). Love is forgiving: According to the film Love Story, ‘Love means never having to say you’re sorry.’ This is rarely true in our experience! According to Paul, love is saying you are sorry and hearing that you are forgiven. Love ‘keeps no record of wrongs’ (5). We can only forgive as God forgives us, and who does so from the arms of Jesus stretched wide in love on the Cross. Love is sacrificial: Paul describes love as not selfish or self-seeking, but selfless and self-sacrificial. It is a love that puts the needs of the other person first. Take the words from 1 Corinthians and instead of the word love, substitute your own name. Now substitute the word Jesus. This is the Jesus who is available to you to make your love for others grow that will bring true Valentine's joy! Taken from the Parish Pump website Advance notice: There will be a combined issue of the magazine for May/June this year, so please can you send any articles or notices in by April 16 th. Editor.

Gardening Notes – Audrey writes: I am beginning to think that we will soon all be creating Bog Gardens! but then over the years I have been persuaded by the weather forecasters that drought resistant plants should be grown or rain tolerant, even tropical plants was recommended one year. I have learnt to ignore them and look for plants suitable for conditions in our garden wherever it may be. In sandy, drier Surrey, the plants we grew were unsuitable for Wales, whilst here I delight in growing plants that struggled before – e.g. Astilbe, hydrangeas, olicentra, hardy geranium, geum, ferns etc. Best of all we never have to put up with a brown parched lawn, whilst faced with a hose pipe ban! I don't really suggest a bog garden but grow plants that thrive in damp conditions above and below ground. Happy gardening! There is a plant for every condition wherever we live.

Make a Mother's Day Appeal – Leaflets are available at the back of St. Mary's if you would like to take part in this appeal. Taken from Traditional Fare of England and Wales, Vanessa Grasso shares this with us for Valentine's Day. Apple Pudding -To four spoonsful of apples, put 4 eggs, 2 spoonsful of grated biscuit, a little lemon chopped small, nutmeg, ginger, and sugar to taste, 2 or 3 spoonsful of thick cream, one spoonful of clarified butter, one spoonful of brandy or white wine, and candied peel cut very thin. Mix all together and line the dish with puff paste and bake in a moderate oven for one hour. Kisses -To one dark piece of shady lane add a little moonlight; take for granted two people. Press in two strong ones a small, soft hand. Sift lightly two ounces of attraction, one of romance, add a large measure of folly; stir in a floating ruffle and one or two whispers. Dissolve half a dozen glances in a well of silence, dust in a small quantity of hesitation, once ounce of resistance, two of yielding, place the kisses on a flushed cheek or two lips, flavour with a slight scream, and set aside to cool. This will succeed in any climate if the directions are carefully followed. To make Burnt Cream (1762) Boil 1 pint of cream with sugar and a little lemon peel shred fine, then beat the yolks and whites of 4 eggs separately, when your cream is cooled put in your eggs with a spoonful of orange-flower water and one of fine flour, set it over the fire and keep stirring it till it is thick. Put into a dish, when it is cool.

Leap Year – 29th February 2016 brings us a Leap Year. We need to add this extra day every four years in order to keep our calendar in alignment with the Earth’s revolutions around the Sun. The problem is very simple: our calendar has 365 days, but it actually takes 365.242199 days (a tropical year) to circle once around the Sun. That means we are ‘out’ by nearly six hours a year. Four times six hours is 24 hours hence an extra day every four years. Adding the extra day in February goes back to Julius Caesar in 45 BC. In his Julian Calendar, February was the last month of the year, and 24th February was Leap Year Day. Does anyone have an anniversary or birthday on the 29 th February – share how you celebrate an anniversary date that comes round only every four years….

Two trips we enjoyed in December were to Bath for the Christmas market and also to the Victorian tour of Picton Castle, followed by lunch and shopping at the Vincent Davies department store at Haverfordwest. At our December meeting, the Mayor commended the committee for all their hard work throughout the year, with setting up meetings and arranging trips, and for the way all members give support to each other and to other groups. She kindly gave a donation of £50 from the Mayor's Charity which Bobbie accepted with our appreciation and thanks. The raffle winners were Maureen James, Elizabeth Jones, Eve Jones and Janet Davies. Bingo winners were Ann Burt, Marlene Leadbeater and Ann Thorburn. The next meeting will be on Wednesday 3rd February, 2pm at the Rugby Club.
