The 31st Sunday in Ordinary Time Saturday and Sunday October 29 & 30, 2016 www.stjudecatholic.org

“...the Son of Man has come to seek and to save what was lost..” (Luke 19:10) Dear Friends, the end of the month of October brings with it nicer weather, an extra hour of sleep, Confirmation, and, for us here at Saint Jude, our Men’s Retreat. (Don’t forget to set your clocks back one hour next Saturday night, November 5!) This past week we celebrated the Sacrament of Confirmation with Bishop Muench, our candidates, their sponsors, and their families. Thank you and congratulations to our young people and to Melanie Chabarria and our team for a job well done! We also held our Men’s Retreat this Saturday. There were more than 50 men in attendance. This was the first event of this type here at our parish, and it was a great success. Thank you to Deacon James Morrissey and our retreat team for helping to plan and facilitate such a good day. Now we move on to continuing our plans for a women’s retreat! On Saturday November 12 we will hold our Saint Jude Auction. The proceeds will benefit our school and help to fund 3 major areas: athletics, restrooms for students, and outdoor lighting. I really hope you can join us. Tickets to the auction can be purchased by clicking on the “Giving” tab on our school website, www.stjudebr.org. I wanted to give you an update also on the work that I have been doing as chair of our Diocesan Pastoral Planning Task Force. We have moved from the recommendation phase to the implementation phase throughout our diocese. Given the reality that we do not have enough priests to pastor and serve all of our parishes (as we have been doing throughout these past years), we have implemented a process through which certain parishes can begin to plan for the future accordingly. Right now we have trained 25 volunteers who are currently entering into a process with 5 pastors—4 in rural areas and 1 in the city. These parishes each have 2 priests. The purpose of the process is to help them design a model of parish ministry and leadership that could be served with 1 priest only, by July 1 of 2017. This has occupied a good bit of my time and emotional energy lately, but I wholeheartedly believe in the process. Please keep us in your prayers. Sincerely yours,

Fr. Trey Nelson

CLW NEEDS VOLUNTEERS

Thank You and update from the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, St. Jude Parish Conference (October 2015 – September 2016)

Children’s Liturgy of the Word ministry needs additional volunteers. CLW does not interfere with work schedules and requires your participation only a few times a year during 9:45 a.m. Mass. Children’s Liturgy of the Word is a wonderful opportunity for 5 years through 2nd grade to experience Scripture in an age-appropriate way. It is a ministry that does not require much time and is a very simple task, yet it is quite important! Please prayerfully consider volunteering. Contact Kelli Knight if you are interested or have questions at 7668780, or the church office at 766-2431.

Many thanks and blessings to the St. Jude Parish for supporting and praying for the members of the St. Vincent de Paul as we provide a hand up to the poor in our parish community. We have submitted our Annual Conference Report for the fiscal year ending September 30, 2016 to the Parish Office and the St. Vincent de Paul Diocesan Council. During the year, 68 active, associate and contributing Vincentians visited with 599 families consisting of 2,171 individuals to provide financial and nutritional assistance. We also provided food boxes and frozen turkeys during Thanksgiving and food boxes, hams and toys at Christmas. Your donations of $59,351.29 throughout the year and from Souper Bowl of Caring; outside donations of $20,992.00 from St. John’s and flood response; and St. Jude School’s food and toy drives allowed us to provide the above services to a total of 2,591 of our neighbors in need throughout the year. In response to the August 2016 Baton Rouge flooding we distributed $15,355.82 in assistance and $500 Walmart gift cards. The conference provided $4,800 to St. Vincent de Paul Special Works to assist others throughout the Diocese. The conference contributed $1,420.00 to the Diocesan Council and $800.00 for our twinning partner in India. Our operating expenses was $723.70 for telephone and stamps. The St. Jude Conference members, without using the above funds, prepared and served dinner four times at the Bishop Ott and Sweet Dreams homeless shelters for approximately 250 persons. A small group of Vincentians continue to weekly pick up bread, pastries and food from various retailers for the St. Vincent de Paul kitchen. Vincentians also serve on prison ministry teams to provide monthly communion at Louisiana State Penitentiary in Angola and Hunt Regional Corrections Center in St. Gabriel. This year, the Vincentian ReEntry Organizing Project was formed to examine how we can add our voice to Social Justice Reforms. Please consider becoming a member of the St. Jude Conference. White Ribbon against Pornography Awareness Week October 30 – November 5 Research indicates pornography leads to sexual exploitation. Further, many victims do not realize they are being sexually exploited and are unaware of the impact of pornography. We are committed to learn more about this widespread problem and its effects on our society. White ribbons/bows will be displayed this awareness week. Please join us in saying “No” to pornography.
