About Special Educators in the area of Hearing Impairment Hearing impairment is a hidden handicap, the limitation of which is evident in every aspect of the development in a child. If these children are identified and rehabilitated early they are capable of adjusting to the expectations of the society. For these students to receive appropriate education, a variety of accommodations are required ranging from minor seating adjustments to the use of sophisticated equipment for facilitating learning. To do all this, teachers in a regular educational setup have to be equipped with accurate information about the nature and needs of Children with Hearing Impairment (CWHI) along with their special instructional needs. Teachers must also understand the psychosocial aspects of the disability. Children with hearing impairment have difficulty acquiring speech and language normally. This in turn affects their academic development. Different kinds of rehabilitation services of clinical, psychological and educational nature are to be made available to help them overcome the impact of the disability. In order to meet the massive needs in the country we have to train more number of personnel in the field of special education with multi-dimensional abilities. A certificate and diploma course is offered that gives importance to the early stage of development of a child. The focus is on language acquisition and cognitive development. In the bachelor's course, the students study the core educational papers which provide basic information on the nature and needs of different disabilities, the psychological aspects of disabilities and trends in special education. The special papers include methods of teaching speech, language and school subjects to CWHI. The master's course has core papers for a strong base of teaching pedagogy along with specialization papers in the area of hearing impairment in addition to the input from the certificate and bachelors course. As a special feature all the courses have immense exposure to the wide variety of clinical setup existing in the institute as part of the practical training. This will enable them to participate more meaningfully in the activities of the Institute and contribute to promoting the quality of life of learners with hearing impairment. The courses offered in special education will create a lot of professional opportunities for successful candidates. They can work in preparatory schools or can work as resource persons for CWHI and their caregivers. They will be eligible to work in both mainstream and special education setups. Besides this, they can also work as administrators in governmental and nongovernmental educational programmes or become planners or policy makers who can make or change the face of special education in our society/the country. Candidates with a proactive inclination can become researchers who pioneer developments in the field of education for both children with and without disabilities. Finally, special educators will help children with hearing impairment to lead a better quality of life and to be a part of the society at large. The Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI) registers candidates with a diploma, bachelor's and master's courses as full-fledged personnel / professionals in the area of special education of the hearing impaired. They are permitted to run early intervention centres and special schools. Apart from this, the field of special education provides plenty of opportunities for a bright career. The premier institute in the area of speech and hearing has already made a mark in the area of special education and you are welcome to join and help in this endeavour. AIISH
