Introduction POWER-GEN International 2011 was held December 13-15 at the Las Vegas Convention Center in Las Vegas, Nevada. The week began with Competitive Power College (CPC) pre-conference workshops on Sunday and Monday held in full and half day sessions offering attendees a certification of completion for participating. Also on Monday were Technical Tours to the Hoover Dam, Walter M. Higgins Generating Station and Goodsprings Energy Recovery Station as a combo tour and the Harry Allen Generating Station. The ever-popular golf tournament was also on Monday held at the Desert Pines Golf Course as well as the Power Engineering Annual Gala Reception & Dinner including the Projects of the Year Awards. The keynote session officially opened the event on Tuesday morning. More than 3,000 attendees sat in on the keynote address by industry experts David M. Walsh with Mitsubishi Power Systems America, Donald B. Karner with ECOtality North America and Elmo Collins with the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, The conference was organized in multiple concurrent sessions within 12 tracks covering Industry Trends / Competitive
Power Generation,
Environmental Issues,
Fossil Technologies,
Gas Turbine Technologies,
Renewable Energy,
On-Site Power and Plant Performance. The conference sessions were better attended than any in the past and attendees received a certificate for 10 Professional Development Hours. Wrapping up the conference on Thursday, Mega Sessions covered grid integration of large amounts of renewable energy, large frame gas turbines and an Asia report panel discussion on the impact of China and India energy sector development on the global power industry. More than 1,200 companies showcased new products and services vital to power generation on the industry’s largest exhibition floor. Co-located for the fourth year, NUCLEAR POWER International was met with equal success with a pavilion on the POWER-GEN International exhibit floor where exhibitors and attendees enjoyed twice the benefits with two great shows under one roof. NUCLEAR POWER International conference sessions and Mega Sessions ran concurrently with the POWER-GEN International sessions and were well attended. The newest co-located event, the POWER-GEN International Financial Forum, kicked off on Wednesday. The event was designed to provide corporate level project developers and financiers an exclusive venue to learn, network and do business, Wednesday began with a Plenary Session on the State of the Project Finance Market, continues with a Keynote Address and Luncheon, followed by five panel discusses and two special-focus seminars.

Event Highlights • Record-breaking attendance of over 20,000 from 94 countries. • More than 20 official buyer delegations from around the world including Brazil, Peru, Canada, China, Singapore, Mexico, Malaysia, Chile, Bulgaria, India, Saudi Arabia, Nigeria, Ghana, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Kenya, South Korea, Serbia, Nicaragua and Vietnam. • 64% of attendees’ companies do business internationally. • 64% of attendees said POWER-GEN International is only the event they plan on attending. • 46% of exhibitors said they only exhibit at POWER-GEN International. • 86% of exhibitors rated the “quantity and quality” of attendee traffic as having met or exceeded their expectations.

Projects of the Year Awards At a gala banquet at POWER-GEN International on December 12, Power Engineering magazine’s editors recognized the 2011 Projects of the Year Award finalists and announced three winners and six honorable mentions. This year’s Projects of the Year Award winners and honorable mentions represented facilities and/or technology that signified excellence in three categories: coal-fired, gas-fired and renewable energy. In place of the Best Nuclear category this year, the magazine handed out a special award for the employees of the Tokyo Electric Power Co. (TEPCO) for their work and dedication in trying to stabilize the Fukushima Daiichi plant in Japan after the earthquake and tsunami that struck. Best Gas-Fired Project 2011: Empire Generating Project, owned by Empire Generating Co. LLC in Rensselaer, N.Y. Best Coal-Fired Project 2011: Plant Miller Flue Gas Desulfurization Project, owned by Alabama Power in Quinton, Ala. Best Renewable Energy Project 2011: Martin Next Generation Solar Energy Center, owned by Florida Power & Light in Indiantown, FL

The Power Engineering Annual Gala Reception & Dinner Including Project of the Year Awards took place Monday evening recognizing the world’s best power projects, honoring excellence in design, construction and operation of power generation facilities.
