alicante city & experience Alicante is a medium-sized city on the east coast of Spain, bathed by the Mediterranean Sea, and capital of the well-known Costa Blanca, where internationally renowned towns such as Benidorm, Calpe, Jávea and Altea among others are located. Being a Mediterranean city bestows Alicante with its own character and climatic characteristics which, combined with its beaches and its natural treasures and historical heritage, have turned it into one of the main tourist destinations in Spain, and even Europe. It enjoys an average annual temperature of more than 18ºC and more than 3,000 hours of sun per year, with

mild winters and hot summers that entice visitors to enjoy the water and the beaches. Alicante is connected to the rest of the world via modern transport infrastructures. Among the regular direct connections from its international airport are Barcelona, Bilbao, Gran Canaria, Ibiza, Madrid, Palma de Mallorca, Santiago de Compostela and Seville, as well as European cities such as Amsterdam, Belfast, Berlin, Birmingham, Bristol, Brussels, Copenhagen, Dublin, Dusseldorf, Edinburgh, Stockholm, Frankfurt, Geneva, Helsinki, Liverpool, London, Manchester, Milan, Moscow, Newcastle, Oslo and Paris, among others. Likewise, its train and bus stations and

its motorways and road networks constantly bring new visitors. The city also has a marina. In its current location, Alicante’s roots go back to the era of Arab rule when, for reasons of defence, the town moved from the area known as Tossal de Manises, located 3 kilometres to the north of the city, to the area of Mount Benacantil, at the top of which the Santa Bárbara Castle was built. First of all, Vila Vella (Old Town) developed on the mountainside, and after the Christian conquest in 1247, it became Vila Nova (New Town). Alicante has always been able to adapt to changing times. An example of this is the fact that it has become

the headquarters of the Office for Harmonization in the Internal Market (OHIM) of the European Union. It boasts a comprehensive and varied selection of hotels, a wide variety of beaches and promenades, a wide range of options for shopping and enjoying outdoor sports and leisure, such as sailing and golf, as well as internationally renowned traditional dishes and festivities. Not to mention its strong tradition as a university city. Its present and its promising future blend with a past of intense history, which has left a perfectly visible mark in the numerous archaeological sites and in the museums dedicated to keeping this memory alive.

The city of Alicante can be accessed by land, sea and air. Motorways, dual carriageways and roads connect it to the main cities of Spain and Europe. The city has a new bus terminal located beside the marina. The International Airport of El Altet, situated 10 minutes from the city centre, is one of the main means of accessing the city for visitors arriving into Alicante, from both Spain and abroad.

The train is another comfortable form of travelling to the capital of the Costa Blanca. The station is situated in the very heart of the city. Travelling by boat is another possibility to travel to Alicante, since its port has connections with various Mediterranean cities. Visiting the city by foot is comfortable and practical, since the distances are short and it is easy to walk from one end of the city to the

other. Nevertheless, Alicante has a public transport network (buses and tram) connecting the most important points in the city, its metropolitan area and the main places of interest in the province. The city also has a tourist bus service (Turibús) that follows a route with stops at the places of interest. Passengers can get on and off the bus as many times as they wish over the course of a day. There is

a multilingual audio system equipped with digital sound in 6 languages and it also has an access platform for people with reduced mobility.

museums The city of Alicante has a wide-ranging and varied selection of museums to satisfy the most demanding of tastes. MARQ (Provincial Archaeological Museum of Alicante) It is one of Spain’s most avantgarde museums on account of its innovative approach towards archaeology, based on the use of modern audiovisual techniques, which led to it being awarded the European Museum of the Year Award in 2004. MUBAG (Gravina Museum of Fine Arts) This museum is located in an 18th century building and exhibits an extremely interesting collection of Alicante’s painters from between the 16th century and the first decades of the 20th century. MACA (Alicante Museum of Contemporary Art) This museum is located in the city’s oldest civil building, dating from 1685 and situated

beside the Santa María Basilica. Recently a new building was built there, which houses the MACA collection; an important art collection from the 20th century, comprising, among others, the works from the former Asegurada Museum, including works donated to the city by Eusebio Sempere. MUSA (Museum of the City of Alicante) The new museum of the city of Alicante, in the Santa Bárbara Castle, is composed of five rooms, where different important stages of the city’s history are explained. There is also a Renaissance rainwater tank (aljibe) and a video room, which shows a projection about the “Pain space” (dungeons). Volvo Ocean Race Museum Situated in the very heart of Alicante, this museum is a modern exhibition space containing an interactive section where visitors can discover first-hand the marine world and the most intrepid seafarers, and hear the oceans’ hidden marvels.

Visitors embark on a trip through the history of the regatta and the marine world using state-of-the-art museography. It is a globally unique museum that looks at the most demanding nautical challenge of our time: the Volvo Ocean Race regatta.

where visitors can learn about the history of the city’s water. Beside the museum are the Pozos de Garrigós, rainwater tanks (aljibes) used to store water until they were put into disuse in 1898, when water started to be taken from the nearby town of Sax.

Fogueres Festival Museum This museum focuses on the city’s most representative festival: the Bonfires of San Juan, declared a festival of International Tourist Interest.

Las Cigarreras Cultural Centre The popular cigarette factory, created at the beginning of the 19th century, comprises an architectural development that stands out from the urban heritage. It was the work centre of thousands of workers for two centuries, but with the transfer of tobacco production to the outskirts, the old factory in the centre became available for municipal use.

Museum of Nativity Scenes This museum captures Alicante’s great tradition of nativity scenes and is located on a pedestrian street in the old quarter, near the City Hall. Bullfighting Museum Dedicated to the world of bullfighting, this museum houses a permanent exhibition of Alicante’s bullfighters and holds activities such as gatherings, films and talks. Alicante Water Museum Located in one of the most traditional parts of the old quarter, this museum is a cultural and educational space

The Las Cigarreras Cultural Centre has become a leading cultural platform in Spain and also boasts a multifunctional auditorium for musical and theatrical performances, a Cultural Heritage section and a House of Music. There is also a Vertical Garden, installed outside.

The variety of museums is accompanied by the important monumental heritage of Alicante. The following places of interest to visit in the city are some examples of this heritage. Santa Bárbara Castle Located at 166m altitude at the top of Mount Benacantil, facing the sea, it is one of the largest medieval fortresses in Spain, with a huge strategic value. It has 3 enclosures at three heights and from three different eras, from the 14th to the 18th century. The castle can be accessed using a lift carved into the rock facing the Postiguet beach, by foot, or by road on the north face of Mount Benacantil. The views of the bay and the city from the castle are splendid. A walk takes visitors from the

Santa Bárbara Castle down to the old quarter, where the majority of the city’s civil and religious buildings of interest are located. The route, which starts in the Ereta Park, on the hillside itself, also skirts the picturesque and traditional area of Santa Cruz. Another option to get around the height difference between the Santa Bárbara Castle and the base of the mountain where it is located, is to walk along the remains of the walls that surrounded the Castle and that now lead to the chapel in the district of Santa Cruz.

Recently, modern municipal buildings have been erected beside the town hall and interesting archaeological remains can be observed on the ground floor. Santa Faz Monastery Located some five kilometres from the old quarter of the city, this monastery contains a relic brought from the Vatican in the 15th century which, according to popular tradition, matches a cloth with which Veronica dried Christ’s blood-stained face on his way to Calvary.

tabarca island Tabarca Island, situated some 11 nautical miles from the city of Alicante, is a prime example of Alicante’s best beaches. It is the only inhabited island in the Valencian Community, although it is in fact more than just one island. It is a small archipelago comprising the islets of La Cantera, La Galera and La Nao.

The island’s centre is surrounded by walls, which have led to the island being declared a site of cultural interest. It has also been declared a Mediterranean Marine Reserve due to the excellent quality of its water and the biodiversity of its fauna and flora.

To get to Tabarca, visitors can take a boat from the port of Alicante, opposite the Explanada. The boats operate with more or less frequency depending on the season. Once on the island, its clean and crystal-clear water beaches are outstanding; both those with fine sand and rocky coves. The walled town is another must-see, where, after relaxing by the sea, you can delight in unique dishes that combine rice with products freshly-fished by the local fishermen, as well as the wellknown caldero dish.

Tabarca Island measures some 1,800m in length and 400m in width. In the past, its coasts were a refuge for Berber pirates and in the 18th century King Carlos III ordered that a town be built, where

Nature has endowed Alicante with a large number of beaches that are one of its main tourist attractions, both on account of the quality of the water and sand, and the beauty of the surrounding areas. Year after year, Alicante’s beaches receive European Union Blue Flag certifications, which bestow deserved international prestige upon them, confirmed by the thousands of swimmers who visit the beaches year-round. Summer is the busiest time for visitors, who enjoy both the beaches’ natural charm and the services offered (sanitary services, hotels, restaurants and cafés, leisure establishments, access via public transport, etc.). During the summer, the majority of the beaches also have

lifeguard services as well as ludic-pedagogical areas for mentally disabled visitors and accessible points for physically disabled visitors. From the busiest ones to the most solitary and remote ones, the beaches are undoubtedly the preferred motif on the city’s postcards. Alicante’s most notable beaches are: El Postiguet Situated right in the city’s urban district, at the foot of Mount Benacantil and opposite the Santa Bárbara Castle, this beach is surrounded by a maritime promenade with spectacular views of the bay. The sand is fine and golden and it is an ideal beach for sunbathing,

reading, practicing sport or simply relaxing at any time of year. La Albufereta Located to the north-east of the city, between Serra Grossa and the archaeological site of Tossal de Manises, it is a sheltered beach, perfect for nautical sports. It can be accessed by bus or tram from Alicante. San Juan San Juan is Alicante’s best known beach. With fine, golden sand, it measures some seven kilometres in length and almost 100 metres in width. It is ideal for nautical and sports activities and has games for children. It is located in an area with a variety of leisure facilities and restaurants and can be

comfortably reached by bus or tram from Alicante. El Saladar-Urbanova This beach is located to the south of the city in a quiet residential area called Urbanova. Cabo de Las Huertas Cabo de Las Huertas is a cluster of cliff-ridged coves with crystal-clear water, ideal for enjoying the sea in peace, away from the noise of the city, and with splendid views of Alicante.

Visitors to Alicante have plenty of opportunities to coincide with one of the numerous festivals peppering the calendar throughout the year. Bonfires of San Juan, Moors and Christians, Carnival, Easter Week, Santa Faz pilgrimage, and Christmas are the most notable events in Alicante’s calendar of festivals. Bonfires of San Juan Commencing on June 20th and continuing until the 29th, it is the biggest festival in Alicante. This celebration is wholly devoted to fire, including acts such as the Pregón, the “Plantà”, the procession of the “Ninot”, parades and passacaglias in the different districts, and the main event on June 24th, the day of San Juan, when satirical cardboard

and wooden statues are set alight. Alicante’s main festival, declared of International Tourist Interest, also includes the celebration of one of Spain’s most important bullfighting festivals. After the main festival days, a fireworks competition is held on the Cocó beach, at the end of the Postiguet beach, which continues until the day of San Pedro, June 29th. Moors and Christians Festival This festival is held in different districts of the city throughout the year. It festively commemorates the conflict between Christians and Muslims over the rule of the land there in the 13th century. Some of the more traditional districts in the city dedicate

several days to the festival, holding a remarkable parade in the centre on December 6th to celebrate the feast of the saint of Alicante: San Nicolás. It is an exceptional occasion to experience one of the most widespread traditions on the Spanish east coast. Easter Week in Alicante Thirty fraternities and brotherhoods participate in Easter Week. It opens with Palm Sunday, which is the start of a week of processions. One of the most moving and popular is that of Holy Wednesday which winds its way through the narrow and steep streets of the district of Santa Cruz. Santa Faz pilgrimage Two Thursdays after Holy Thursday a popular pilgrimage

known as “La Peregrina” takes place, at the Santa Faz Monastery, located some 5 kilometres from the centre of Alicante, where the cloth with which, according to tradition, Veronica dried Christ’s face on his way to Calvary, is kept. It is one of Spain’s most important pilgrimages. Other festivals in Alicante include, for example, the May Crosses Festival in the District of Santa Cruz, from May 1st to 3rd, the festival in honour of the Patron Saint of Alicante, the Virgin of Remedio, in August, the festival in honour of the Virgin of Carmen, on July 16th, Carnival and the Festival of San Roque, declared Traditional Festivals in 2004.

shopping and gastronomy SHOPPING Modernity and tradition blend together in Alicante’s commercial showcase, offering its visitors the most modern and current brands as well as the typical products of the area that are deeply-rooted in the tradition of Alicante. This can all be found in luxurious boutiques and shopping centres and in a wide network of small and medium-sized shops that sell traditional Alicante products such as turrón (nougat-like confection), chocolate, sugared almonds, dates, liqueurs and wines from the area, vegetables and tinned fish. Other sectors of the province’s economy are also represented in its businesses, offering products such as toys, footwear, leather clothes, carpets and ceramic and wicker crafts. There are several interesting shopping areas in the city

centre: on the one hand the pedestrian streets and areas surrounding the Main Theatre; and on the other hand, the area near the main market and Avda. Alfonso el Sabio, not to mention Avenida Maisonnave and its area of influence, Alicante’s real commercial thoroughfare. The Explanada de España promenade boasts a wide selection of craft stands with necklaces, bags, scarves, souvenirs etc. Better known as the hippy stands, there are also artists and caricaturists. The Sunday bazaar in the Plaza del Ayuntamiento is devoted to stamp collecting and antiques. GASTRONOMY Renowned worldwide for its health benefits, the Mediterranean diet is especially evident in Alicante, since the products grown on its fertile land and the local

fishing products comprise the main elements of this diet. Rice is certainly the main ingredient of the majority of the dishes, accompanied by either fish and seafood, or by meat and vegetables, such as arroz a banda (fisherman’s rice), arroz a la alicantina (Alicante-style rice), caldero (mixed fish rice dish) and arroz caldoso (creamy rice), with fish as the characteristic element. The popular “olleta” is the best example, cooked with vegetables and pulses. For visitors with a sweet tooth, there is nothing better than our turrones (nougat-like confection), horchata (cold drink made from tiger nuts) and ice-creams, all 100% homemade. The wines produced from the vineyards in the area, of renowned prestige and fame, are the perfect accompaniment for these exquisite delicacies. One of the most typical dishes is undoubtedly “coca amb

tonyina”, a juicy pastry filled with tuna. Other types of cocas, such as the “boba” (sweet) and the “molletes” (savoury) are some more examples of Alicante’s culinary richness; a richness that extends to include the wide variety of montaditos (small sandwiches combining meats and salted meat and fish with vegetables) and tapas. Alicante has a wide-ranging choice of restaurants of all types, from the most elegant to those with a more relaxed atmosphere. Some areas of interest where visitors will find a wide selection of establishments include the Calle Mayor and the area surrounding the town hall, Calles San Francisco, Castaños and Felipe Vergé (pedestrian zones), the marina and the Explanada de España, avenida Maisonnave and its surrounding areas as well as the sea front along San Juan beach.

leisure, sea and golf The sun, beach and other charms that the Costa Blanca offers its visitors are complemented by a large number and variety of sports which can be enjoyed all year round due to Alicante’s mild climate. Nautical sports and golf take the prize for the sports that tourists can enjoy. Alicante has a large number of renowned companies dedicated to providing services related to the practice of nautical sports such as yacht chartering, diving, windsurfing, sailing, rowing, etc. It is no wonder that Alicante was chosen as the headquarters of the start of the 2008, 2011, 2014 and 2017 series of the round-theworld regatta known as the Volvo Ocean Race, a port by port round-the-world sailing competition.

In addition, the city of Alicante has two 18-hole golf courses, as well as three other courses of similar characteristics, making up a very pleasant and interesting circuit.
