LEARNING HOW TO WRITE ENGLISH DRAMA: An Idea for Students Oleh: Ali Fauzi*)

ABSTRACT As other literary works, drama is the reflection of real life dramatized in such a way that it produces special beauty and amusement. Drama is a work of literature which delineates life and human activity by means of presenting various actions of-and dialogues between-a groups of characters and is designed to be acted on the stage. To be able to write it well it is better that the playwright imagines how the actors and actresses act on the stage. Because of this, it is said that writing drama is the most difficult form of writing. Therefore, it is extremely needed to show them how to write English drama easily. There are steps students should do to write drama such as choosing simple theme and model, popular topic, putting a few characters, and range of setting and inserting entertainment elements. Even, for beginners, it is also suggested to write it by putting ridiculous dialogues in Indonesian or even in Javanese as insertion in order to make it more alive. The more important one is that they are eager to train to write it not to stress on the content or materials. Having been habit to practice it, they may then write them in English only. The objective of this discussion is to encourage students to try to write drama and to equip them with the knowledge of writing it, and to wipe out difficult image it has. After they know how to write it, they are hoped to develop it by themselves based on their creativities. Learning English literature can not be separated from learning drama. Learning drama will be complete if students also learn how to write it and even how to performance it on the stage. For some, it is not an easy work to do because there are so many things to think and do. First, students must know what drama is, how to write it and why they should do it. This forces them to often read drama texts to add their knowledge and to enrich references in order that they will have something to pour. Besides those, they must also know the structure of drama and have enough ability in language, grammar and structure and good logic to develop their imagination. As soon as they have known them, they will be able to try to write it although it is quite simple. Learning how to write drama can be started from the simple form. Students may choose folklore famous in the society even local society and simple form like one act drama with limited characters and settings. They may also put insertion by giving Indonesian and even Javanese to produce the elements of beauty and amusement. Having been used with the light materials, they may try to the serious ones with moral massage and teaching of life in it and put diction as well as figurative language. By writing drama, students may demonstrate their English, explore and develop their imagination and motivate them to always read a lot in order to equip themselves with the knowledge of language, style and meaning. Therefore, it is fit enough to choose the title “Learning How to Write English Drama: An Idea for Students” as the topic of discussion in this article.

It must be known that drama is a literary work in which it reflects the lives and activities of human beings. It is a work of literature or a composition which delineates life and human activities by means of presenting various actions of-and dialogues between- a groups of characters (Reaske, 1966: 5). As a story, a drama is written in form of acts and scenes to represent the time and place in which the events of the story take place and it has three types; tragedy, comedy and tragicomedy (Stephen, 1984: 32-36). Although drama may be designed as a reading material, it is originally acted on the stage. Since it is performed on the stage, it needs extrinsic items like stage setting, lighting, sound, costume and decoration besides intrinsic elements like plot, character, conflict and theme. As a theatrical performance drama should be acted well on the stage and equipped with arms, legs, tears, laughs, whispers, shouts and gestures that are alive and immediate (Meyer, 1990: 929). The most important thing the drama should have is conflict. It is said that conflict is rooted in the straggle of human beings concerning the motives, necessities, tendencies or desires. The struggle can cause the existence of conflict in its various forms which they can be used as the basic principle to develop dramatic values (Cuddon, 1991: 15). This, some concludes that drama is a work of art presenting action in pantomime, dialogues, a narrative involving conflict between characters and some external and internal force. Meanwhile, Learning means an effort to know something considered useful to have. It is a process where the learners try hard to understand certain things by which

they will use it as the basic principle to do something (Hornby, 1974: 480). In learning something one must be serious in order to gain optimal objective and need theories as well as model to complete understanding (Dahar, 1988: 5). Learners use the theories to know the propositions, follow the certain rule and combine one logical proposition with the others in order to be able to predict and explain the events they learn. After learning the theories needed, students may then practice it over and over till they get what they intend. Resulted from the process of learning the theory and doing the practice, it comes up the term “Learning by Doing” which is popular now.

LEARNING HOW TO WRITE ENGLISH DRAMA It is positive that there are many theories telling how to write English drama. However, the writer needs to give the alternative way of writing English drama he thinks easy to practice. Here students may learn how to write it by understanding the steps below: (i)

Students may choose the simple and popular object of the story. They may choose folklore familiar enough with them. By this, it enables them to make a plan and to have enough references and information.

(ii)

Students may write it in form of one act drama. By writing it as exercise, it enables them to focus on the certain time and place the events of the story take place.

(iii) Students may insert the elements of amusement. They may put in Indonesian and even Javanese dialogues between in order that is will be more alive and Tadris, Vol. 4, No. 4, Desember 2014

they may enjoy it. It is because only ones who have high level of language skills are able to understanding and enjoy English drama. (iv)

Students may put the light conflicts. After being used with them, they may try to write serious drama with many complex conflicts in it.

(v)

Students may limit the setting. They may put one or two places and just short period of time. By this, it enables them to plan it in detail.

(vi) Students may put ridiculous names of character. By this, it is said that the drama will be fresh and enjoyable to read. (vii) Students may use daily language first. As soon as they have been used to write it, they may write it using stylistic language. (viii) Students may refer to the fallowing concrete model as the example.

Synopsis of Ande-Ande Lumut Once upon a time, there was a popular king. He was the king of Jenggolo, Kediri and also a well-known seer. After he retired from his throne as a king, he was replaced by the crown prince, Raden Panji Asmorobangun. Raden Panji Asmorobangun had a very beautiful wife named Raden Ayu Galuh Condrokirono. The kingdom was prosperous, just, peaceful, strong and stable. However, when he died, the whole Kingdom was in confusion. It was attacked by its longstanding enemy, the Singosari Kingdom. The people of Jenggolo kingdom lived in constant terror. Nearly all of king’s families were killed. The new King and Queen were caught and put in prison by the enemy. Fortunately, they succeeded to escape from it. The queen escaped and ran away aimlessly and became a beggar. Eventually she arrived in Gedangan village and began to live in the house of a the widow of Gedangan. She now lived under the new name, Kleting Kuning. also hid from the enemy’s cruelty. He ran and looked for his wife everywhere but he could not find her. Finally, he arrived in Dadapan village in despair and disguised himself as Ande-ande Lumut. He now lives in the house of the widow of Dadapan accompanied by his servant, Bondet. In this place too, there were many girls who proposed to be his wife. One of the girls was Kleting Kuning, his real wife. They met and then moved to Kediri to found a new kingdom after Singosari soldiers destroyed and left it.

ANDE-ANDE LUMUT A Contemporary One Act – Drama and Dance

ACT I Scene 1: In the house of the widow of Gedangan (Mbok Rondo Gedangan), her two daughters, Kleting Abang and Kleting Ijo, are joking and laughing accompanied by their middle-aged maid, kleting Gonyang. They are teasing each other and singing old Javanese song one by one. They look very happy and relaxed. (Enter Kleting Abang, Kleting Ijo and Kleting Ganyong, dancing togerher) -----------------music --------------Klating Abang : How beautiful the weather is today! There’s gentle wind and there are flowers and fruit everywhere. Look …. Kleting Ijo! Look at the beautiful butterfly perching on the window sills. I wonder if that has any special meaning!

Kleting Ijo : I don’t think so. Everyday butterflies perch on window sills. Nothing will happen. However, … last night I had an ominous dream. I dreamed of …. I am shy to say. Malu ...ah. Kleting Abang : What? What did you dream?. Tell me! Kleting Ijo : I … I ... It was awful. I was scared but in the end I was happy. Kleting Abang : Go on, dear. Tell me! I am eager to know. Tell me about your dream! Kleting Ijo : Listen! But please don’t tell anybody else. Kleting Abang : Yeah, I promise. I won’t tell anyone. Kleting Ijo : I ... it was awful, it was terrible. I …. I …. dreamed of being bitten by a snake! Kleting Abang : (Shocked) oh …. That’s horrible! Beware! It must be an omen! Kleting Ijo : No, I don’t guess so because the snake was not poisonous and I think it actually has a romantic meaning! Kleting Ganyong : it is impossible that a snake has no poison. But I have heard that if we dream of being bitten by a snake it means we are going to get married! Kleting Ijo : (Happily) oh! ….. Right Biung. Oh …. Snake! Will you really find me a beloved husband because I dreamt of you? Kleting Gayong : If you find a husband and live happily ever after don’t forget me! Kleting Ijo : No Biung, Say a prayer for me! Kleting Abang : well, what about me, Biyug? will I not find a husband soon? I am dying to get married. (acting attractively) Aku wis kebelek pengen dadi manten iki lo ….. Kleting Goyang : You will also find a husband, believe me. Beautiful girls like you two will, of course, find handsome husbands for example someone like Pak Saefuddin. There is always Mas Yani……., He is quite agreeable! Wes to ngger seliramu mesti oleh Bojo, Yen gak oleh yo Mas Yani…… wae ojo adoh-adoh. Timbang adoh jodone ora kebeneran pisan.

Now, while we are waiting for the contribution from Pak Saefuddin, let’s play and sing together. Ayo… sambil nuggu sumbangan dari Pak Saefuddin, mosok pentasan kok urunan dewe dewe. ayo podo nyanyi bareng.

I have forgotten all my problems. Hey ….. Who is that? There is a beggar woman standing over there by the gate. Kleting Ijo and Kleting Ganyong : (Both of them crane their neck towards the door) who? Where? Kleting Abang : Over there! Look! (Enter the beggar in ragged clothes) The beggar : Excuse me, would you be so kind as to let me shelter here for a while? Kleting Ganyong : Who are you? Where are you from? The beggar : I am from Lonjen. My name is Jennifer Tulkiyem. I am the old love of prince Charles. Iya … saya ini bekas pacarnya Pangeran Charles. You have been studying English at STITMA. You’re in the fourth year but you can only say “Hello Darling, I love you”. Dengar itu.. Pengemis saja bisa berbicara dengan bahasa Inggris. Kleting Abang : what part of Germany do you come from? The beggar : Well. Germany. Jejere kauman. I didn’t feel like living there any longer because drunken young men were always chasing me. Iya … Jerman. Jejere kauman. Saya enggak kerasan disana karena selalu diuber-uber orang-orang sedem. Kleting Abang : So? The Beggar : Afterwards I escaped to lonjen. Lonjen is about fifteen kilometers from here. Lantas saya lari ke lonjen, lonjen iku limolas kilo soko kene yakni kulone Jenu. Kleting Ganyong : Oh …… udelmu bodong kono. Dapurmu wong Galbang wae kok ngomong lonjen-lonjen. You are from Galbang but you keep saying lonjen-lonjen. Ma’am …. Ma’am ... We have a guest. Ro ... Ndoro ada tamu . …. (Enter Mbok Rondo Gedangan) Mbok Rondo Gedangan : Oh ….. Oh …. Oh …. A guest! What is your name? Where are you from? The Beggar : My name is Tulkiyem. I am from here and there. I am orphan, no parents, no brother, no sister, in fact, no family in the world. Mbok Rondo Gedangan : Why have you come here? The Beggar : If it is possible I would like to live here. Mbok Rondo Gedangan : Now, please, let’s all get to know one another.(She introduces herself to and shake hands with Kleting Abang, Kleting Ijo and Kleting Ganyong. They do it sinically).

( Exit all, dancing accompanied by music) ------------------- Music*------------- Interlude*----------------Scene 2 : Beside the quiet river which lies far away from the village, Kleting Kuning is washing clothes. Meanwhile further down the river, Kleting Ijo, Kleting abang and Kleting Ganyong are bathing, laughing, joking and gossiping about Kleting Kuning. (Enter Kleting Kuning, Kleting Abang, Kleting Ijo and Kleting Ganyong) Kleting Ijo : Why does my mother take on such a poor beggar? I don’t understand her. Kleting Abang : I don’t know. It seems such a foolish decision. What possible advantage could there be in having such a beggar as our servant? Kleting Ganyong : Be patient girls! We have to help her, it is our duty. She is homeless, she needs our help very much. She needs food and shelter. We have enough so we must share our good fortune with her. (Kleting Abang and Kleting Ijo nod their heads) ---------- Pause ------------Kleting Abang : By the way. Have you heard that in Dadapan there is a handsome gentleman called Ande-ande Lumut? He would be ideal as a husband. Kleting Ganyong : Yeah. I’ve heard of him. He is the son of the widow of Dadapan. He is very good-looking. I only saw him once and I dreamt of him all night. He is a remarkable young man. Kleting Ijo and Kleting Abang : O, ya ….. Kleting Abang : I discussed him with mother, and we decided that we should propose to him immediately. Kleting Ganyong : Really? Well, after we have finished bathing, we will go together and I am sure that he will accept your proposal.

Kleting Ijo and Kleting Abang: (answer in unison) yes, Biung ……… now, let’s go home so we can set out to Dadapan right away. (Exeunt Kleting Abang, Kleting Ijo and Kleting Ganyong). ---------------------- Music ------------------In the meantime, kleting Kuning is left alone, washing clothes and weeping about her bad luck. Suddenly something falls from the sky and there is a mysterious voice. Kleting Kuning: Other girls are happy and enjoy their teenage years, but not me! I am not like them, I am miserable. I am servant with too many tasks and no one will help me. The daughters are happy and they don’t care about me, they don’t even know I exist. why, God? do I have such bad luck? (begins to weep) Misterious Voice : Kleting Kuning ….! Don’t be afraid. Why are you weeping my daughter? I have come to help you. See the whip, take it. This whip will be very valuable to you (the whip falls next to Kleting Kuning) Kleting kuning : What Voice was that? (looking around from the source of the voice). What is this? (She takes the thing in trembling). Well, who knows, this thing might be able to drive away my bad luck. The other girls have gone to propose marriage to Ande-Ande Lumut, Why can’t I try to be like them. But will any gentleman accept my proposal of marriage? I am a poor, homeless servant, with no shelter. (Weeping) (Enter Kleting Ganyong) Kleting Ganyong : Kleting Kuning, why are you weeping? Does such a poor girl want to propose marriage to Ande-Ande Lumut? Speak up Kleting Kuning. Speak up. Say, do you want to win Ande-Ande Lumut sympathy?. Do you also want to win his love? You have been weeping since I left you. If you want to, let’s go home and dress. I will accompany you to Dadapan. Wong daapurmu, rupamuuuuu u….welek koyo tekek ngono kok melu melu arep nglamar Ande Ande Lumut. (Exeunt Kleting Kuning and Kleting Ganyong) -------------Music--------Scene 3: The sound of Solo river, birds singing, the voice of Yuyu Kangkang taking them, Kleting Abang and Kleting Ijo, across solo river with a kiss as payment for the service. (Enter Yuyu Kangkang walking around the stage --Music) Yuyu Kangkang: How quiet it is today? There’s no one near the river, no canoes crossing, nothing to do. Maybe it is because it’s Saturday, an official holiday, I knew nothing about it. What bad luck! I’ve just been sitting around all day. (Enter Kleting Abang and Kleting Ijo,chattering about how they might cross the river) Kleting Abang: My dear Kleting Ijo, what do you think? It’s late Afternoon and it’s getting dark. How are we going to get to Dadapan? Kleting Ijo: Ummm! It looks like there won’t be any more boats crossing to Dadapan as it it’s five a clock in the afternoon. What we can we do? Let’s wait for a minute or two, who knows there might be one more boat. Yuyu Kangkang: What are you, beautiful girls doing? Where are you going, ladies? You both look very pretty, beautiful eyes, lips, hair and hands. Kleting Ijo: We want to go to Dadapan. Who are you? Yuyu Kangkang: Iam Yuyu Kangkang, the owner of this river. Kleting Abang: Oh, Yuyu Kangkang! We would like to go to Dadapan. Are there any boats to take us across the river? Yuyu Kangkang: Today is Saturday, it’s a holiday. So, of course, there aren’t any boats crossing the river, besides it is late in the afternoon. Kleting Abang: Then,how are we going to cross the river? I am afraid of coming late in Dadapan. What do you think my dear Kleting Ijo? Kleting Ijo: It’s almost night fall and I am afraid we won’t reach Dadapan today. Can you help us Yuyu Kangkang? Yuyu Kangkang: Don’t worry, lovely ladies! I’m ready to help you! Kleting Abang and Kleting Ijo: Thank you Yuyu Kangkang. Yuyu Kangkang: However, there is one condition.

Kleting Abang: What is it? What do you want us to do, Yuyu Kangkang? Kleting Abang:Tell us Yuyu Kangkang. Tell us. Yuyu Kangkang: You must give me a kiss. A romantic kiss. On the forehead, on the cheek, on the lips or even anywhere! Kleting Abang: (shocked) That’s disgusting. Don’t you think so, dear Kleting Ijo? Yuyu Kangkang has asked us for a kiss in return for his services. Kleting Ijo: You can’t ask for that Yuyu Kangkang. Why must I bribe you? We are of the same of race and nation. How will our country progress if every good deed must be repaid? Yuyu Kangkang: It is natural to ask for something in return for good service. If I help you what do I get in return for such a good deed? Do you agree to my condition? If you don’t I’m going home! Kleting Ijo: What do you think my dear Kleting Abang? It is getting more and more complicated now. Kleting Abang: It’s not a big problem. Now one will know that we are kissed by Yuyu Kangkang anyway. The most important thing is to get to Dadapan quickly and safely, isn’t it? Kleting Ijo: It’s up to you, dear. If you think it’s the only way. Yuyu Kangkang: How about it ladies? Are you ready? Kleting Abang and Kleting Ijo: (in unison) Okey…okey… Yuyu Kangkang: Good! Good! Good!. If you agree and I agree then every thing will be okey. We all get what we want. You can get to Dadapan and I can fulfill my desire. (Exeunt them followed by the sound of the river and the screams from the two girls) -----------------------MUSICAL INTERLUDES: Dancing, Singing etc.-------------------(Enter Kleting Kuning with Kleting Ganyong walking around the stage) Kleting Kuning: It is late afternoon. Everywhere is so quite. Where can we cross the river? There aren’t any boats and there doesn’t seem to be anyone around.

Kleting Ganyong: The road to happiness is never easy!. It is pointless continuing your journey to Dadapan, he will never accept you as his wife anyway. Let’s go home instead. Ora mungkin kowe di terimo karo Ande-Ande Lumut, Wong Agnes Monica saja ditolak mentah-mentah kok. Ayo moleh wae, ayo….. nduk… wong ayu…. Kapok kon. Iki sopo iki, kok ono Uwong Gede, duwur ui…reng, rupane morat-marit.

(Enter Yuyu Kangkang)------ music----Yuyu Kangkang: Who are those two crazy girls walking along the river bank in the dark. Hey… crazy girls! where are you going, ghost? Ini kok ada orang gila malam-malam gini, he…we we gombel mau kemana kao? Kleting Kuning: My name is Kleting Kuning, I am not a ghost. Who are you? Kleting Ganyong: Wewe….. Embahmu kono ta! Menungso jare wewe. What’s your name? Yuyu Kangkang: I am Yuyu Kangkang. How can such ugly beggar be called Kleting Kuning? Did you know that Kleting Kuning is the name of the King’s daughter? But you! You are an ugly beggar and you claim to be Kleting Kuning. Your smell is like a goat. Are you a woman or an animal? Where are you going on such a night? Kleting Kuning: We are going to Dadapan. We are having trouble because there aren’t any boats to take us across the river. Kleting Ganyong: Could you take us across the river? Could you help us, Yuyu Kangkang? Sudikah kamu mbantu kami, sayang! (Kleting Ganyong caresses Yuyu Kangkang’s hair) Yuyu Kangkang: Sayang. Sayang. Kalo ada maunya, sayang-sayang. No! you are ugly women. Cross the river, anyway you can swim! Jump! Dive!. But I won’t take you. You have disgusting faces. I don’t want to see girls like you again, goats! Nehik…. Nehik…. Kleting Kuning: Don’t worry Biung Emban. It is not a problem if he won’t help us. We can cross this river by ourselves. (the light off). watch!……. Hiyak……!.

(Kleting Kuning hits the river with her whip. They cross the river without anyone’s help) (Exeunt Kleting Kuning and Kleting Ganyong) Yuyu Kangkang: Where have those crazy women gone?. They have suddenly disappeared. Where are they? Did they jump into the river? How have they managed to get across without me seeing? It’s magic! They have supernatural power! Edan temenan, dimana gadis gembel-gembel tadi! Sakti….tenan. ****----------------------INTERLUDE-------------------***** Scene 4: It’s quiet and peaceful at the widow of Dadapan’s house. I became a beggar and I finally arrived at Gedangan and became a servant, and lived with my beloved sisters Kleting Abang and Kleting Ijo. Ande-Ande Lumut: I also succeded in escaping from the enemy. After looking for her everywhere, I arrived in Dadapan in despair. I was helped by this widow and allowed to live here, accompanied by my special servant, Bondet. CONCLUSION From description in previous chapters, it is concluded that drama is a work of literature which delineates life and activity of human beings by means of presenting various actions and dialogues between a group of character. It is written in form of acts and scenes to represent the time and place in which the events of the story take place. so that it is called the art of conflict. Since the drama is frequently designed to be acted on the stage, so to write it well the playwright has to imagine how the actors and actresses act on the stage. Besides it, the playwrights must also understand the form of drama well and know many kinds of language used. This causes that writing drama is considered difficult for students. To overcome the problem, here is an easy alternative students can do to write drama. They may write it by choosing simple and popular topic of the story, limited setting and character, light conflicts and inserting elements of amusement. Having tried many times to write, they may write it choosing the complex ones. Through learning this way, it is hoped that it encourages students to try, equip them with the knowledge of how to write it and wipe out negative image that to write it is difficult. Therefore, it is suggested that before writing drama students must know what drama is. They must read the theoretical books to add knowledge and then try to write it although it is simple. The must also read drama texts over and over in order to know the concrete examples. For the beginning they may write drama using daily language and insert it with Indonesian and even regional languages in order to train and to avoid boredom. After being able to write it, it is better to continue with the more complicated ones. Aside from those, they must have motivation to write and start from the easier one with interesting topic and consider that it is not a heavy burden for them.
