Both steel and aluminium are coated by similar processes, and the same resin technologies are used for the topcoats. However, there are significant regional variations in the usage of the principal types of topcoats. Cool Chemistry™

Primer

The function of the primer is to give good intercoat adhesion between substrate and topcoat. It also provides corrosion resistance to the overall coating system.

World Expo Culture Center - Shanghai Architect:

Wang Xiao'an, Shanghai Panel type:

Honeycomb panel in XXL (Quadroclad XXL) COIL COATER:

The Culture Centre is one of four permanent pavilions for Shanghai Expo 2010. It was designed by architect Wang Xiao’an, prize winner of 2010 Far Eastern Architectural Design Award. The cladding consists of nearly 30,000 triangular shaped honeycomb panels in XXL size. This extraordinary size could only be achieved using wide-coil aluminium, 2,000 mm in width.

Case Studies

AkzoNobel Coil Coatings has extensive knowledge on the impact of the environment on coatings around all areas of the world. We provide strategic expertise which will ensure you have the right coating for your particular project wherever that might be on the planet.

Innovative color effect and design Many unique projects, supplied by coil coatings, demand custom-made coatings that stand out from the 'neighbors' aesthetics. Innovation of new colors and effects - such as flip flop, metallics and wrinkles effects - are therefore daily challenges within the global labs. Color matching As one of our main services we offer tailored color matching. Pigment selection is backed-up by 30 years of real-life outdoor exposure data.

VMX Architects, Amsterdam

Mini-Line in Gamleby, Sweden

Process engineering As part of our ongoing development process we carry out research on new coil coating technology on our own Mini Line. This is a pilot sized replica of the coil coating process, which allows us to develop products that require fewer line trials. Real life outdoor exposure Over the last 30 years we have gained long term outdoor durability expertise, by exposing thousands of panels in Florida, Sweden and New Zealand.

Partnering in development Since our coatings are applied at hundreds of coaters around the globe, AkzoNobel does the hard work to assure that the customer is receiving the performance that is expected. The performance of our products can only be optimized when the total products - substrate and coating matches the requirements of the end-user. Developing technologies together with our customers is another major challenge of the R&D labs.
