Previously served on the NSWKA Iaido Technical Committee, is the Chair of the NSWKA Jodo Technical Committee, and was previously Nati onal Secretary of the AKR Jodo Technical Board. Sandan ZNKR Iaido (Perth 2008), Yondan ZNKR Jodo (Japan 2012). Only NSWKA representative to have medalled at the nationals in all three arts (Kendo / Iaido / Jodo). Been instructing in both Iaido and Jodo for over a decade.

Christina Trevillion, NSW Yon Dan Iaido Sensei, Shirasagi Dojo NSWKA Treasurer; Iaido Technical Committee Member: Chiba Kendo Renmei

My involvement in martial arts commenced in the early 1980’s when I first trained in Ju-Jitsu. In 2004 after a chance meeting with Mr R Bennett, I commenced training in the art of Iaido and attended my first seminar in Perth, 2005. I have been a member of the Australian Kendo Renmei since 2004 and a member of the Chiba Kendo Renmei since 2008. Grades up to and including Shodan were all attained in Australia. At the invitation of Dr Y Kadono, Grandmaster of Suio-Ryu, 7th Dan Seitei Iai, I successfully attained Ni Dan (2008), San Dan (2010) and Yon Dan (2013) at the Chiba Prefectural Dojo, Japan. I have travelled to Japan on several occasions to train under the supervision of Dr Kadono Sensei and recently, Aoki Sensei (7th Dan) of Chiba Prefecture. Prior to Kadono Sensei’s passing, my training was formally handed over to Aoki Sensei who is currently instructing me towards Go Dan. Damon Schearer, ACT Damon currently heads Iaido and Jodo training in the ACT and is currently Iaido Yondan (Japan 2011) and Jodo Yondan (Japan 2012). In 1996 he briefly studied Iaido under the private guidance of Greg Mapstone in Queensland. He returned to Iaido training under the instruction of David Kolb at the Brisbane Aiki Kai in 1999 and commenced Jodo in 2000. He has trained in Japan in Iaido with Obayashi Tadashi Sensei 8th Dan Kiyoshi of the Dai Ken Kyo Iaido club in Osaka and several sensei at the Miyagi Prefecture ZNKR; and in Jodo privately with Kuniaiki Nagayama 7th Dan Hanshi in Sendai. In 2007 he moved to Canberra where he was instrumental in formalising a dedicated training environment for Iaido & Jodo and promoting both arts. He has attended the annual AKR Iaido Jodo Seminars and Championships (IJSC) in 2003 (Qld), 2004 (Vic), 2006 (NSW), 2007 (Tas), 2008 (Qld), 2009 (ACT), 2010 (WA), 2011 (Vic); 2012 (NSW) and 2014 (Qld). He has also attended Iaido seminars in Australia by Katsuo Oda Shihan in 2010 (NSW), and Jodo/Iaido seminars in Australia by Nagayama Shihan in 2005 (Vic) and ACT (2009-2014). He is responsible for managing the ACT Nagayama Shihan seminars which see Sensei visit multiple states on the east coast. He has organised promotional demonstrations at Floriart (2008), Canberra Multicultural Festival (2009), ACT local schools programme to promote Japanese Culture (2011), and Canberra Nara Candle Festival (2008-2014) which for the last 3 years at his instigation has been a “Budo Demonstration” organised by him for all ACT Japanese martial arts. He was an organiser for the 2008 IJSC on the Gold Coast, and the organiser for the 2009 IJSC in Canberra. He is currently organising the 2015 IJSC in Canberra. He holds a Cert 4 in Training & Assessment and a Level 1 accredited coach with the martial Arts Industry Association of Australia and is undertaking a Cert 3 in Sports Coaching. He has solid experience in policy writing and compliance, and planning and co-ordinating major events (both AKR related and in professional life). He has been a member of the Australian Kendo Renmei since 1999, the ACT delegate to the National Council since 2010, and an elected member of the Iaido Board and Jodo Board since 2012. He has demonstrated that he is devoted to promoting the growth in training of Iaido (and Jodo). He is currently (privately) organising for several AKR members to attend the Jodo Taikai in Japan in October 2015, and if elected his main focus will be supporting the development of a coaching accreditation program in the AKR.

David Kolb, QLD 53 Years of age. Been practising iaido since 1989, 5 Dan. Also 4 Dan Jodo. I have previously held a position on the Iaido Board at various times and conversant with the issues and challenges facing the art. I am active as an instructor at Club and State level within the QKR and regularly attend the National Seminar. I am happy to assist in any way I can to assist in the development of Iaido in Australia.

I have travelled back to Japan on several occasions to train under the supervision of Kadono Sensei before his passing my training was officially handed over to Aoki Sensei (7th Dan) of Chiba Prefecture, to continue training towards Go- Dan. Klara Lantay, NSW I hold a Sandan in both Iaido and Jodo and have attended every Nationals since commencing my studies. I am one of the few but increasing number of Iaidoka who have no alternative but to perform the first four Seiteigata standing instead of seated. Peter Dodd, NSW I trained in kyudo and aikido in Japan in the 1980’s and 90’s, continued aikido with Aki Kai in Australia, then took up iaido in June 2006 with Suigetsu (Ruth Franklin Sensei), passing 2nd dan in January 2012. I founded my iaido dojo (Shingetsu) in November 2011. I have had a lifelong interest in all aspects of the Japanese sword and enjoy passing on what I have been taught to others.

Rick Berghuis, WA My name is Richard Berghuis and I practise both Iaido and Jodo. I commenced my training in 2001. I am the instructor at the Dunborough and Margaret River Dojos of South West Budokan. We are a regional Dojo approximately 250 kilometres south of Perth WA. Robert Brown, NSW Bob first discovered Iaido in 1983 when he purchased Waner & Draeger’s landmark book, and has been pursuing the ZenKenRen weapon arts ever since. He is one of only four people to have attended all Australian Iaido & Jodo Seminar/Championships. Bob served as the Secretary AKR Iaido & Jodo Boards. He co‐authored the official history of the AKR with the late Sensei Ron Bennett. Bob strongly believes we’re only temporary custodians of the arts, obliged to study them carefully and spread them fairly and equally, in order to keep them alive for future generations.
