Traffic trends at Munich Airport in 2012
The EU Commission is likewise concerned about the challenges currently facing European aviation. That was revealed a report by the Commission to the European Parliament presented in Brussels at the end of September 2012. “We welcome the Commission’s assessment that European airlines are disadvantaged in many ways in international competition,” stated Klaus-Peter Siegloch, President of the German Aviation Association.
2012 was a difficult year for German airports. The euro and debt crisis in Europe and a weak global economy resulted in slackening demand for air transport services. Burdens such as the air traffic tax and the continuing high price of oil meant that airlines faced additional costs, which could only be compensated in part by higher ticket prices. The difficult situation for airlines at present was reflected in a series of insolvencies among European airlines at the beginning of the year. The Hungarian airline Malev had to cease operations in January. Cirrus Airlines, Cimber and Spanair, all customers of Munich Airport, also filed for insolvency.
The airlines tried to counter these economic trends and cost drivers by means of programmes aimed at reducing costs and increasing efficiency. The two largest airlines at Munich Airport were also compelled to respond to the current situation. Lufthansa aims to cut €1.5 billion in annual costs with its “Score” project. Air Berlin is trying to break even in future on the back of two programmes: “Shape & Size” and “Turbine 2013”.
“European airlines could slide even deeper into the red than previously assumed.” That was the assessment for air traffic in Europe published by the International Air Transport Association (IATA) at the beginning of October 2012. The IATA expects total losses of $1.2 billion for European aviation in 2012.
2012 was nevertheless a record year for Munich Airport, with passenger numbers exceeding 38 million for the first time.

great deal more often. Lufthansa’s NEK (new European cabin) programme, in which the Airbus A319–A321 continental fleet was fitted out with lighter and slimmer seats, was completed in 2012. The greater seat density enables a higher capacity in the same aircraft. Wide-body aircraft accounted for 7.3 percent of commercial flight movements, almost unchanged year on year.
quite
The already mentioned cost-cutting programmes by airlines resulted in a fall in take-offs and landings in 2012. 387,983 movements meant a decline of 2.9 percent in commercial traffic. This result exactly matches the average annual result of all German commercial airports. With a few exceptions, the airports represented in the German Airports Association (ADV) were not able to achieve the volume of flight movements of the previous year. Only Hanover Airport and Schönefeld and Tegel in Berlin managed to barely maintain their figures. In Berlin, the flight offering was sharply increased to reflect the planned commissioning of the new airport in the summer. Now these flights will be conducted at the existing airports, despite the fact that opening of the new airport has been postponed until further notice.

In a comparison of the top ten European airports, Munich Airport performed slightly below the average, but was able to climb one place to 5th, just ahead of the Spanish capital Madrid.
The average MTOM (maximum take off mass) continued to grow. The cumulative figure was 76.3 tons, 1.3 tons more per takeoff than the year before. Despite the decline in movements, the total number of seats offered in 2012 increased by more than 0.5 percent. The number of seats offered per flight was 138, 4 higher than in the previous year.
Number of seats available increased despite the fall in flight movements As part of programmes to increase efficiency, the airlines tried to cater for the further increase in demand in 2012 with larger aircraft or by increasing the capacity of the same craft. The trend towards larger aircraft continued in 2012. Specifically, aircraft with up to 70 seats from the Embraer E145 family, the BAe 146 and also the turboprop machines ATR 42 and ATR 72 were used far less frequently, whereas Embraer E170 and E190 jets (70 to 120 seats) were used a very
There was an average of 1,060 take-offs and landings a day, 35 less than in 2011.

of summer destinations, Lufthansa has offered the new destination of Rotterdam since October 2012. Some of the connections of the insolvent airlines Cimber and Spanair were taken over by SunAir (British Airways) – to Billund – or Vueling (to Barcelona).
In particular, there was a decline in traffic within Germany. The number of domestic flights was cut sharply as part of the airlines’ cost-cutting programmes. There was no longer a scheduled flight to Erfurt in 2012. 1
Continental traffic experienced the lowest losses. Despite the tough environment, Munich Airport was able to welcome a number of new customers in this segment. SATA from Portugal commenced flights via Porto to Ponta Delgada on the Azores. Operating out of Munich for the first time, the UK’s Monarch Air launched a broad offering of flights to Birmingham, London Luton, Manchester and Leeds. Volotea, a newly founded Spanish airline has offered flights to Nantes in France since September 2012. Apart from a number
Continental traffic proved to be the stabilising segment in 2012, since long-haul volumes suffered larger declines in percentage terms than continental transport. Miami, Tashkent and the summer destination of Irkutsk were no longer offered in 2012. The reduction by airberlin of its range of long-haul tourist flights alone caused around half the decline in movements. That was not able to be compensated for by numerous increases in frequency by other airlines on existing routes.

journey in Munich rose by 3 percent. Results from the passenger survey show that the proportion of passengers with a foreign place of residence was just as high as the proportion living in Germany. Far more passengers from Franconia chose Munich Airport as the starting point for their trip. They travelled to the airport by the NurembergMunich ICE train, which connects the two cities in 62 minutes. The volume of business travellers has also increased over 2012 by 2 percentage points to 45 percent.
More than 38 million passengers for the first time Passenger volumes reached a new high despite the tough environment and lower number of take-offs and landings, with the number exceeding 38 million for the first time at Munch Airport. This is attributable to Germany’s still good economic situation, with its low unemployment and very high rate of employment. Moreover, this new record is a sign of the quality of the flight offering. In particular, hub traffic enables airlines to adjust the number of frequencies to meet customers’ needs, even in times when demand is weaker, without impairing quality for travellers or restricting the range of destinations.
Munich ranked 7th in Europe Munich Airport’s passenger numbers grew by 1.6 percent, above the average for German commercial airports. Munich achieved an above-average result among Europe’s top ten. However, it was not able to hold on to sixth place, a position it had only narrowly captured last year. Turkey’s strong economic growth and the drive by Istanbul’s Atatürk Airport to establish itself as a hub enabled the latter to post an exceptional increase in passengers by more than one fifth.
The proportion of transit passengers fell in 2012 by one percentage point to 39 percent. As a result, the number of transit passengers in absolute terms was just below the level of the previous year. However, the number of passengers originating and finishing their

Continental traffic as a guarantee of passenger growth
As a consequence, the number of passenger carried on domestic flights fell slightly. The number of intercontinental passengers rose slightly. Holiday destinations on all continents – from Namibia to Mauritius, from the Maldives to destinations in the Caribbean – were hit by airberlin’s restructuring and cuts. Whereas the African continent in particular suffered falls, destinations in the Gulf region again posted high gains. Routes to the U.S., the United Arab Emirates and China accounted for most intercontinental passengers. As in 2011, the intercontinental destination in greatest demand was Dubai, whose passenger volumes increased by almost 20 percent.
The dynamism in passenger growth weakened as the year went on. While the increase in the first quarter of the year was still in excess of 5 percent, there was stagnation in the fourth quarter of 2012. Whereas airlines from the Gulf region expanded traffic through their hubs and defied the general trend, European companies were forced to respond to bleaker economic conditions by launching cost-cutting programmes. This resulted in a dilution of the domestic flights offered and adjustments in international air transport, both of which left their mark on passenger numbers.

Annual Traffic Report 2012 | Passengers
Continental traffic was the only passenger segment to record growth in all months of the year, thus helping ensure the positive trend for 2012. Many countries in Eastern Europe were once again able to grow their passenger numbers by a double-digit percentage figure. The easing of the political situation in countries impacted by the “Arab Spring” led to a return of holidaymakers and a rise in passenger figures to the level of 2010. The markets with the highest volumes in 2012 were again Italy, ahead of Spain and the UK.
London Heathrow was once more the international destination in greatest demand. The top ten destinations in continental traffic are listed below: As in the previous year, the month with the highest volumes was July, when 3.6 million passengers used Munich Airport as the starting point or end of their journey or transferred flights there. The average number of passengers per day in 2012 was just under 105,000.
