On behalf of the entire Brigham Young University-Idaho community, I welcome you to Education Week. This campus has been consecrated as a place of inspired teaching and learning, making it a special environment for such an important gathering. The theme for this year’s Education Week is taken from the well-known hymn “Lord, I Would Follow Thee” (Hymns, 220). A special phrase from this hymn, “Savior, may I learn to love thee; walk the path that thou hast shown,” beautifully portrays a deep desire to develop increased love for the Savior by emulating His marvelous works. As Latter-day Saints, we are given many meaningful opportunities to follow Jesus Christ’s perfect example. From small daily acts of selfless service to faithfully fulfilling our responsibilities, we build lives of faith, consecration, courage, humility, and charity—ultimately walking the path of true discipleship. The Savior has walked this path before us, and He knows the way. It is my prayer that you will be steadfast in following Jesus Christ, always abiding in Him and trusting in His almighty power. And may you be greatly blessed and enriched by the learning opportunities that await you here at Education Week. I look forward to being with you. Again, welcome to BYU-Idaho.

Frequently Asked Questions Why can’t I bring a baby or children under the age of 14? Education Week, by design, is meant to give adults and young adults an academic and spiritual experience with minimal distractions. We are trying to provide an atmosphere that makes learning easy and enjoyable. Children under 14 may easily become disinterested and disruptive. For these reasons, we instruct the room hosts not to admit children under 14 or individuals with babies into classrooms, except at the specified mom’s track building and rooms.
Why is the BYU-Idaho dress code different from BYU and BYU-Hawaii? All Church Education System institutions have different dress codes. Each is unique to the institution and each dress code has been approved by the Church Board of Education governed by the President of the Church.
Can I give my pass to someone else? Education Week passes are non-transferable. Each student must be registered to attend, and each student must wear their own nametag. The handling of mailings, housing assignments, refunds, specific questions, and emergency situations deem it necessary that the information in our system be accurate on each attendee.
Can I record classes, lectures, or musicals? In recording, we run the risk of copyright violations on printed or recorded material. Copyrights can cover not just printed works but also ideas, arrangements, and other creative works. Copyright violation, even unintentionally or for personal use, is illegal. Please do not impose on the teacher by asking them for permission to break this policy.
Can I save seats in classes or musical performances? Education Week classes are on a first-come, first-served basis. If you are saving seats, you must give up your seats when the room becomes full. Saving seats after a room has filled, puts everyone in an awkward situation. Please be courteous and release your seats when the class is full.
Why can’t I bring an extra chair or just stand in the back when a classroom is full? Building safety and fire codes will not allow us to fill a room beyond its legal capacity. Please understand if an usher asks you to kindly attend another class, they are following campus and state regulations.
Lord, I Would Follow Thee
45
Why can’t you move a speaker to a larger room when the class reaches capacity? When scheduling the rooms for Education Week, we take into consideration a myriad of factors so we can provide the facilities that will best suit the student and the teacher. We try to anticipate as many elements as we can, including past class attendance and predictions. We use 5 buildings on campus and 18 rooms; combine that with nearly 45 presenters and 150 hosts who each have teaching time preferences and technological requests. Simply moving one teacher will affect all elements of the schedule.
Why don’t you use larger rooms? We already use the largest rooms on campus. With the many rooms on this campus, only seven rooms hold more than 200 people. This is one of the reasons we offer so many classes each hour and utilize most of the rooms that hold more than 60 people.
What if a class I have chosen is full? Many people have had the experience described by this Education Week participant: “When I couldn’t get in the class I wanted, I went into any class close by that had room. I found it to be just as exciting and informative as the first-choice class. Every class was good.” You may discover whole new areas of interest, and that is part of what Education Week is all about.
Doesn’t my program pass guarantee me a seat in each class? Education Week classes are on a first-come, first-served basis. Approximately 2000 participants may attend Education Week this year. Obviously if everyone wanted to go to the same class, no one class can hold that many students. We do promise to have enough capacity during each hour of each day to accommodate all participants in a variety of classrooms.
When is Education Week going to be held next year? To be determined.
