SYNOPSIS

SYNOPSIS

Ali and Zuhal are two teenagers who grew up in an orphanage with a bond as strong as between brother and sister. When Ali moves out on account of his age, Zuhal is put into the dubious care of a foster family and is no longer allowed to see him. In a desperate attempt to save Zuhal from a scheduled arranged marriage, Ali commits a terrible crime, and they find themselves on the run, away from civilization and into the woods. There, in a secluded space deep in the forest, they try to start a new life in a mystical natural environment full of wonders, strange residents and concrete threats. One day, however, Ali finds Zuhal drenched in blood and doesn’t have any choice but to take her back to the city again.

The young and local director Honza David is in Prague to film the Russian invasion of the liberalized Czech Republic in 1968. With the politically explosive material and beautiful Eva – the love of his life – he makes a secret passage to Vienna. They both are awaited by Helmut Zilk, the director of the Austrian Broadcasting Corporation, who already knows the young and ambitious actress Eva very well and the Czech Secret Service even better.

Egon Schiele – Death and the Maiden

Flowers of Evil

SYNOPSIS

SYNOPSIS

At the beginning of the 20th Century Egon Schiele is one of the most provocative artists in Vienna. His life and work are driven by beautiful women and an era that is coming to an end. Two women will have a lasting impact on him – his sister and first muse Gerti, and 17-year-old Wally, arguably Schiele’s one true love, immortalised in his famous painting ‘Death and the Maiden’. Schiele’s radical paintings scandalise Viennese society while daring artists like Gustav Klimt and art agents alike are sensing the exceptional. But Egon Schiele is also prepared to go beyond his own pain and to sacrifice Love and Life for his Art. Art that inspires us up to this day.

With unrest long simmering below the surface in a majority immigrant Helsinki suburb, police brutality results in a father being hospitalised, the incident compounded by the authorities‘ mistakes and often unintentional overreactions. A typically long, hot Finnish summer explodes into riots and violence as frustration and despair finally boil over. Set against the run-up to this cataclysmic climax, half-brothers Sipe, 14, a good student but unwilling to accept life’s restrictions and rules, and Juno, 26, hot tempered, prone to violence, a petty criminal, struggle for a better future, an end to their alienation and to find new opportunities in life. Sipe, father Arttu and mother Laura want Juno to study, to work, to move out of the suburb and on in life. But for Juno it is already too little, too late. Having abandoned all hope, now completely estranged from society, he has made bad choices and travelled too far down the wrong road to turn back. The fuse is lit.

Hanna’s Sleeping Dogs

Heart of Stone

SYNOPSIS

SYNOPSIS

There‘s a very good reason why you should let sleeping dogs lie, as 9-year-old Johanna discovers. Growing up a good Catholic girl in the provincial Austrian town of Wels in the late 1960s, she learns from her grandmother her family‘s secret: they are Jewish. Life now starts to change, uncomfortably so: the caretaker bullies her, the religion teacher ignores her and her traumatised mother stops talking to people. Both older women know exactly who were the very worst Nazis back then. After the war they reinvented themselves as devout Catholics. Johanna, however, is determined not to hide, she wants to be proud of her heritage and now becomes Hanna. But the „sleeping dogs“ are awake, they are starting to bark and they still have their teeth. HANNA‘S SLEEPING DOGS is based on the novel SCHLAFENDE HUNDE by Elisabeth Escher, in which she recounts her true life experience. Writer-director Andreas Gruber grew up with her in Wels in the 1960s and is thus also personally familiar with the story‘s milieu.

Peter and Lisbeth are two young but unfortunate lovers living in a rigid rural community in the Black Forest. She comes from a wealthy family of glassblowers; he is a poor coal worker on the lower end of society. To become rich and respected, Peter makes a pact with a devil named Dutch Michael, who rips out his heart and replaces it with a stone. Robbed of all warmth and feeling, Peter becomes a coldhearted go-getter who rapidly achieves his goals. Ruthlessly he strives for money and power. But Lisbeth no longer recognizes Peter as the man she once loved and turns against him. There is only one way for him to put things straight: Peter must get his heart back. HEART OF STONE is based on a dark fairy tale written by Wilhelm Hauff first published in 1827. It tells a poetic love story set against the mysterious backdrop of the Black Forest. Hauff’s tale was conceived as a criticism of man’s greed for power.

The pressure on Peralta increases when a shady casino owner gives him a strict ultimatum to pay off his enormous gambling debt. But this is Brazil, a three-time World Cup winner, and soccer fan Peralta knows that a solid-gold replica of the legendary Jules Rimet Trophy is on display at the Football Association’s office. Together with petty crook Borracha, Peralta sets out to steal the cup from its cabinet. The next day, while watching the news, the burglars realize they mistakenly stole the original statue and that the entire country is alarmed by its disappearance... But how do you get rid of the Holy Grail?

Only her classmate Tim, a gifted graffiti-artist and loner himself, notices her artistic talent, and the two get closer – much to the displeasure of Lena’s childhood friend Nicole who is now best friends with cool but manipulative Stella. When Lena sees Nicole and Tim kissing, she breaks off contact with her former friends, not knowing that Stella set up the kiss. In her despair, Lena throws herself head-on into the social network and confides in the chat buddy she has never met in person – but behind the stranger’s profile are Nicole and Stella, plotting further intrigues against Lena until the façade of harmonious suburban life comes tumbling down.

SYNOPSIS

SYNOPSIS

Desperately trapped in a failing marriage, Helene Brindel finally loses all hope when she feels she has been abandoned by God as well. Reaching out, she sees the key to her liberation in the form of the celebrated psychologist Eduard E. Gluck. But the charismatic Gluck is having to fight demons of his own. Only when he and Helene encounter one another, these two apparently complete opposites find themselves drawn irresistibly together. Hesitantly at first, the one moves closer to the other - and both give themselves over to a world in which love is likewise a test and a promise.

The Great Northern War is over and Vice Admiral Tordenskjold, hero of the victorious Danish-Norwegian fleet, has no clue what to do with his life. His valet Kold persuades him to go on a vacation, arguing that now is the time to marry and settle down. The trip turns into a fun and freewheeling journey through Denmark and northern Germany. Women swoon at the sight of the attractive young man – he is a 1720s version of a modern day rock star. Dark clouds gradually appear on the horizon, however, and in Hanover, the increasingly alarmed Tordenskjold is forced into a suspicious duel by a former Swedish archenemy seemingly bent on revenge.

SYNOPSIS

SYNOPSIS

His last straw is his Grandfathers death, who fought the same inner battle, while his wife, now widow – still in good faith of doing him a favour – keeps deciding everything. Jan’s wife Olga is also convinced that she is in charge of their happiness, while Jan is increasingly scared of following his Grandfather’s path. He keeps testing more and more peculiar strategies to re-liberate himself and eventually chooses an absurdly adventurous and very uncomfortable way into the wilderness to find out there is no simple manual for reaching his vision of freedom.

But with all their material needs covered and never having suffered from want, their state of mind is the big issue. Stella‘s the first to find the ‘solution’: she gets pregnant. The others quickly follow suit and these adult children find life is suddenly all too real. In a mixture of subtle and broad humour, touching moments and genuine observation, Mignon learns feeding your child only bio and boycotting nappies leads to domestic unpleasantness (her range of designer baby clothes proves a flop, too); Ines, now the mother of daughter Elvis, throws Chris out, whereupon he moves into his car and embarks on an affair with Stella, while she and Markus eventually find happiness is a bicycle repair shop in the countryside.
