Did you know that: • over the past three decades childhood obesity rates in America have tripled? • nearly one in three children in America are overweight or obese? • the numbers are even higher in African American and Hispanic communities where nearly 40% of the children are overweight or obese? • our children make the first generation in history to grow up less healthy than their parents? • if this issue is not addressed one third of all children born in 2000 or later will suffer from diabetes at some point in their lives? Society is taking note of the Adventist approach to health and wholeness. Adventist were featured in National Geographic (November 2005) as one of the healthiest and longest living people. Newsweek (April 10, 2011) identified Adventists as one of the profiles leading to a longer, fuller life. Earlier this year Ted N.C. Wilson, World President of the General Conference of Seventh-day Adventist (SDA) Church, participated in a meeting at the White House with First Lady Michelle Obama and the Faith Based and Neighborhood Partnership. That meeting launched “Let’s Move: Faith and Communities.” This initiative is Mrs. Obama’s commitment to address the challenge of childhood obesity. Of the challenge and the long standing Adventist value on health and wellness Dan Jackson, President of the SDA Church in North America, states, “This is our time! As a church we have long talked about the importance of not just healthy continued, page 2

Based on their lack of response, he recommends the Board honor their request to drop their membership. MOTION to approve their request to remove their names from our books. APPROVED. Community Services: CIRCLES MINISTRY TO END POVERTY UPDATE: The meetings will be on Thursday

evenings, dinner will be at 5:30 and the meetings will be from 6-7:15. The Ally Training Workshops will begin August 25 and will run for 7 weeks, with the potential to have two Ally Training Workshops during the 15 week Leader training. There are 25 people signed up to be Allies to date. Facilitators will be Kathy Wuttke and Stacy Dortch. The Leader Orientation will be on September 8. The Leader Getting Ahead Workshops will begin on September 15 and will run for 15 weeks; facilitators will be David Kidder and Susan Lane. Leader recruitment has begun at the Crisis Ministry and will run a total 6 weeks prior to the Orientation. Meal teams are being formed from the Allies, and plans are to recruit Leaders to be a part of these teams as a step toward reciprocity and fellowship. Childcare is still under development, we would like to have three care providers per meeting. Funding is still an issue. We need about $5000 and have received just under $600, which will be matched by an anonymous donor. We are seeking funding in such a way so as to not take away from the Crisis Ministry and the church budget. Other: Eddie expressed his appreciation to the Board and gladness to be at Foster for another year.

CRISIS MINISTRY

TUESDAY MORNING STORIES It’s an extraordinary experience to behold God’s hand at work! Every week, Tuesday after Tuesday, He reveals in a multitude of ways that Foster’s Community Services is His ministry, and this week was no exception. This morning it came to our attention that our towels for camper showers had dwindled down from thirty to just ten sets. There was discussion about a good solution and the possibility of going to Dollar General or another discount store to buy inexpensive towels. Not thirty minutes passed when a donor showed up with a bag of towels to donate. Then a “Truly I say to you, to the extent that you did it to one of these brothers of Mine, even couple hours later another donor brought in a large the least of them, you did it to Me.” bag of freshly laundered towels. Both donations on Matt 25:40 the heels of the need being identified! This is such a classic example of how God provides for our Community Service Ministry to the poor! No sooner do we become aware of a need, then turn around and God provides the solution. Usually the solution comes through His faithful people – you! Thank you for all you do in the Lord’s behalf for those in need.

HANDS UP PROGRAM Asheville High social worker Pam Pauly sends this note to Foster Church:

“Dear Foster Members, I just want to thank you for your continuing support of our students at Asheville High. It is really important for kids to have the basics to start school & you have provided that for us. Blessings to you all!”

We continue to lend a “helping hand” to the Hands Up Program as a new school year begins. The Hands Up Program was established in 2001 to address issues facing many Asheville High School students. This project has several aspects including encouraging & preparing students for college. We have chosen to focus on immediate needs. Some students come to school without having eaten breakfast. By lunch time hunger & blood sugar issues become a big distraction to learning. There is a need for snack items such as granola bars, crackers, fruit treats, cheese sticks, etc. to give to specifically targeted students. These snacks are also needed for students who will not have supper when they get home. There is a need for specific personal hygiene items: deodorant & razors for men & women. Also needed is travel size shaving cream for homeless students. This extension of Community Services is one important way to carry out our mission of loving & serving people (To love as Christ loved; to comfort as Christ comforted; to give as Christ gave). Thanks. for your continued support.

COMMUNITY SERVICE

AN EVENING OF LAUGHTER & LEARNING Foster’s Circles Ally Workshop began Thursday, August 25, and here is what some of the prospective Allies had to say about it: “It was the best Ally training I’ve ever been to!” (Jimmy Vestal, Director of ABCCM’s Circles Program) “That was phenomenal!” With a beaming face one Ally said, “To be honest, I was kind of dreading it, but it was a lot of fun yet I learned so much!” “What an outstanding meeting!” There’s no doubt in anyone’s mind that God gifted Kathy Wuttke, the Ally Workshop lead facilitator, with the ability to present important concepts in a way that is fun yet right on topic. Everyone left the meeting comfortable with the idea of forming an intentional friendship with a family moving toward self-sufficiency. For those whom the Lord may be impressing to become involved with this ministry, we will begin another seven week Ally Workshop on October 20. For more information contact Kathy (828-274-2014 ext. 303 or [email protected]); or explore to www.movethemountain.org.

LEADER ORIENTATION & WORKSHOP The Leader Orientation is September 8 and the Workshop begins September 15! Please join us praying God’s will be done and He bring to us the families He wants us to form Circles of friendship with. Also pray the Lord will provide the funding for this Workshop and grant funding for future programs.

But thanks be to God, who always leads us in triumph in Christ, and manifests through us the sweet aroma of the knowledge of Him in every place. For we are a fragrance of Christ to God among those who are being saved … 2 Cor 2:14-17
