Akemi Mold Repair, Tooling and Epoxies The Akemi line of quick-setting, high temperature patching putties for fiberglass mold and part repair are considered some of the best materials available on the market today. They have distinct advantages over other putties marketed for the same purposes. The putties are BPO cured and this helps to insure a more thorough and faster cure. The putties do not contain styrene but rather vinyl toluene as a cross-linker. These putties are resistant to high temperatures which makes them ideal for patching and repairing fiberglass and cultured marble molds. Each of the different putties has a specific purpose which is explained below. Advanced Plastics has more product information and instructions for use and patching of FRP molds with the Akemi products upon request. Akemi FILLER 6 (Orange)(w/hardener) Akemi FILLER 7 (Gray)(w/hardener) Akemi FILLER 7 (White)(w/hardener) BPO Hardener 1 oz. tube BPO Hardener 4 oz. tube FILLER 6 is a BPO-cured, polyester material used for fiberglass mold repair when the patch WILL NOT have gel coat put on top of it. FILLER 6 can be buffed out to as good of a gloss as the rest of the mold. FILLER 7 is a BPO-cured, polyester material used for patching fiberglass molds where gel coat WILL be put on top of the patch. FILLER 7 is also used extensively as a fairing compound, where pattern makers want a putty that will shape well, cure quickly, sand easily, yet control shrink. Includes BPO hardening paste. Sold in 1 qt. cans. If you want extra BPO paste, it is also sold separately in 1 oz. and 4 oz. tubes.

Supplies and Materials Sanding Aid Sanding Aid is a mixture consisting of a wax additive dissolved in a Styrene Monomer base. It is mixed in resins and gel coats for finish coats and patching to ensure a tack-free surface cure. As the gel coat cures, the wax rises to the surface. Sanding aid should never be used when additional lamination will be done - due to the presence of the wax, the layers will not bond. Sanding aid should be added at the same concentration as the catalyst (MEKP).

Patching Aid Patchaid™ from Cook Composites & Polymers is specially formulated to improve the working properties of traditional gel coat spray patches. When mixed with gel coat, Patchaid™ provides several benefits to mold or part patching/resurfacing. They are: +Low color, which results in excellent color patches; +Low viscosity, for easier spray and less orange peel; +Long working time, advantageous for repairing large defects and for mold resurfacing; +Light stabilized, to minimize discoloration of patches made using clear or pigmented gel coats; +Surface cure, which keeps sandpapers from "gumming"; +Easier to sand and buff, due to proprietary additives and less orange peel. Sold in 1 Gallon cans.

Styrene Monomer Styrene Monomer is the base product of almost all polyester resins and gel coats. When sold separately, it is the recommended product to be used when thinning of gel coats and resins is desired. Sold in gallons, fives, and drums. Webbing Solution Webbing Solution a formula containing a special additive that causes gel coats to "string out" when used in spray equipment. Webbing Solution's most common uses are in the boat industry, for spraying a non-skid or alternate color on boat decks, engine compartments, storage compartments, etc.

Liquid Pigment Concentrates Some manufacturers prefer liquid color concentrates over dry colors for consistency and mixability. Advanced Plastics represents the American Colors and AOC CHROMA-TEK line of quality color pigment concentrates. These concentrates can provide quality, consistent color pigments in a rainbow of colors in up to drum quantities.

Raw Materials Polyurethane Foam Products Polyurethane foam is a low viscosity, two-component, water blown, rigid product than can be either sprayed or poured, depending on the product / application needed. It's excellent adhesion to Fiberglass laminates and its high closed-cell content make it an excellent product for providing flotation in the boating industry and insulation in the tub/spa industry. A major use has been found in the taxidermy industry as a ready-made form for taxidermists. Systems can cover the full range of densities from less than 2 to 30 or more pounds per square foot, as well as some with fire-retardant properties. Most products are supplied as ready-to-use that have been pre-formulated for specified nominal, free-rise densities. Sold in 1 gal., 5 gal. and 55 gallon drum quantities.

"A"- Component Foam This polyisocyanate "A" component foam is used as the standard base "A" foam that is used with all other foams Advanced Plastics Stocks. "B"- Component Foam The 2 pound variety is used in forming flotation/strength areas in boats, while the 3 pound variety is used to make ready-made forms for use by taxidermists.

Saint-Gobain Vetrotex America At the Forefront in Fiber Glass Technology Advanced Plastics has been an authorized Vetrotex America distributor since 1976. We offer a broad and comprehensive line of Vetrotex fiberglass reinforcements throughout all our locations. Technical know-how, on-time delivery, and excellent service make Advanced Plastics THE Vetrotex distributor of choice. First produced over 50 years ago, Fiberglass Reinforced Plastic (FRP) products have worked their way into nearly every aspect of our lives. Our cars use FRP structural components because of their tremendous strength-toweight ratios, lower tooling costs and the design flexibility they afford automotive engineers. The electrical insulating properties of FRP have helped appliances, tools and office machinery become safer, stronger and less expensive to produce. Corrosion-resistant FRP tanks and pipes, yielding extended service life over metals, are helping industry control toxic waste problems, thus contributing to a cleaner environment. And, perhaps our greatest success story, the advantages of FRP in the marine industry are so great that is has virtually replaced other traditional materials in the recreational boating market, and is making great strides in the commercial and naval defense areas. Fiber Glass Mat Chopped Strand Mat is made by chopping bundles of glass fiber and dispersing them evenly with a random orientation onto a moving belt or chain. The strands are then held together with a chemical binder. Due to random distribution, the strength of the product is isotropic in the plane of the mat. Chopped Strand mat is available in many widths up to 120 inches and weights of from 3/4 to 3 ounces per square foot. It should be noted that mat weights are per square foot while woven roving weights are per square yard. Chopped strand mat is most commonly used in contact molding (hand lay-up), centrifugal casting, continuous laminating and some closed molding applications. Conventional Rovings (Gun Roving) Conventional Rovings, also known as assembled rovings or classical rovings, are a series of parallel filaments bonded together in multiple strands and wound into roving balls. They are available in a broad variety of yields, weights, sizing treatment and packaging configurations. Package weights are usually about 40 lbs. to 80 lbs., with a yield of between 56 and 414 yards per pound. Conventional Rovings are generally used in a process where they are chopped. They wet-out quickly and disperse evenly throughout the resin matrix during molding or forming, which makes them ideal to be chopped for spray-up, preforms, mats, centrifugal casting and open mold processes. Spray-up is a low- to medium-volume method used to make relatively simple mediumto large- size parts with one finished surface. Among the most frequent applications are in the chemical-resistant, marine manufacturing and tub/shower/spa industries.

Fiberglass Direct Wound Rovings Direct Wound Rovings are a collection of parallel fiber glass filaments wound together in a single zero catenary strand. This continuous strand is wound as a tubeless or tube type cylindrical package, defined by end use, then sheathed in a plastic sleeve that allows it to run out without snarls. Direct wound rovings (RO99® Rovings) are available in a variety of yields and sizing treatments to perform in virtually all of the major resin systems. As a single end, zero catenary reinforcements, direct wound rovings are particularly applicable in the pultrusion and filament winding processes. Due to low fuzz and excellent strength characteristics, direct wound rovings are also used to create woven and knitted fiber glass fabrics.

Woven Rovings Woven roving is a heavy fiber glass fabric that imparts high strength to molded parts. Made from direct rovings, woven rovings come in a wide variety of thicknesses, strength orientations, widths from 3" to 130" and weights from 8 to 40 ounces per square yard. Woven roving is a favored product of many hand lay-up operations because of its highstrength laminate properties, easy drapeability, rapid wet-out, and relatively low cost. Woven roving is the quickest way to add thickness and stiffness to a laminate.

Combination Woven Roving / Chopped Strand Mat (also known as "Stitchmat") Fabricated by stitching or chemically bonding one ply of woven roving to one ply of chopped strand mat, this combination reinforcement achieves greater strengths and more efficient handling characteristics than either could do separately. The result is a heavy, drapeable fabric that combines the bi-directional fiber orientation of woven roving with the multi-directional fiber orientation of chopped strand mat. The combination of mat and woven roving lends a tremendous advantage to hand lay-up open mold operations because two layers can be cut and placed in the mold in a single operation. Available in a variety of widths from the factory, Advanced Plastics also has a slitting machine that can provide you with custom widths upon request.

Fiberglass Chopped Strand Chopped Strand is made by cutting continuous fiber bundles into short pieces. Ranging in length from 1/8" to 1/2", these fibers are then added to plastic compounds to add strength, stiffness and dimensional stability. The type of continuous strand used and the lengths to which they are cut determine the bulk density and flowability of the reinforcement. For example, 1/8" strand can range in bulk density from 20 to over 40 lb/ft³. The type, length and amount of chopped strand to be used are defined by the strength and weight requirements of the application, and by the process to be used. Uses:

Polymer Concrete Thermoplastic Compound Molding Thick Molding Compound (TMC) Bulk Molding Compound (BMC)

979 Chopped Strand is a high performance, general purpose reinforcement used for compression, injection, or transfer molding, automotive heater housing, taillight housing, fender extensions, electrical outlet boxes and switch controls, fan shrouds, hand tool housings and business machine components. It is specifically designed to achieve optimum results in bulk molding compounds (BMC).

Fiberglass Cloth BGF and the Hexcel Corporation are the leading suppliers of reinforcement fabrics. While they produce many standard fabrics for the composite industry, their main strength is the special fabrics for advanced composites, including carbon and aramid fabrics. The complexity of products and applications make it essential that the people you deal with can give you accurate answers promptly. When you call Advanced Plastics you will get correct answers promptly.

Fiberglass FIBASIL Surfacing Veil FIBASIL is a non-woven "C" glass veil which displays exceptional stability and is easily worked without any folding, creasing or wrinkling during the application process. Because FIBASIL is manufactured from "C" glass fibers, it is not affected by ultra violet; it will not rot, it does not burn, has excellent weathering properties, and is acid and alkaliresistant. FIBASIL has been specifically designed and developed for use in the FRP industry where it provides greater control of the thickness of resin-rich layers. It reinforces the gel coat layers and reduces the risk of cracking and moisture ingression, as well as increasing the flexibility of high-resin coatings. FIBASIL improves the impact strength of the resin-rich top layer and resistance to weather, abrasion, chemicals and corrosion. FIBASIL prevents surface tension between the gelcoat and the supporting laminate, allowing "Wet-onWet" construction, and adds greater all-round durability to any FRP molded product.

Vectorply Performance Composite Reinforcements Vectorply manufactures a broad family of advanced technology engineered reinforcing fabrics called VECTORPLY® Non-Crimp Fabrics (NCF). Already used in a wide variety of applications in the automotive, aerospace, construction, corrosion and marine industries, the unique attributes of VECTORPLY® fabrics set them apart from other performance engineered fabrics. NCF is a composite-reinforcing fabric in which fibers are organized into layers or plies of variable weight and orientation. The layers are stitched together. The result is a range of engineered fabrics with predictable, repeatable properties for the composite industry. Although similar to "Stitchbonded" fabrics, VECTORPLY® fabrics are unique in that they are manufactured via an in-line process requiring less stitching; this enhances fabric drapeability and conformity. This process includes a method for adding chopped strand mat to fabrics by directly chopping roving at the desired weight, and then stitching directly to the fabric BINDER FREE. This lack of binder in the mat, typically required of other "stitch-bonded" manufacturers again leads to superior conformability and wet-out. These manufacturing processes allow Vectorply Composites to make a wide-range of heavy products; some in excess of 100 oz. per square yard of reinforcement, with handling characteristics of much lighter fabrics.

Sandwich Construction Materials Sandwich construction has become an important consideration when using Fiberglass Reinforced Plastics, in particular the marine industry. Advanced Plastics stocks a wide variety of structural materials and core materials for a multitude of applications. Contact us today for more information on application-specific core and sandwich materials. What is MATLINE®? MATLINE® is a porous polyester non-woven material made with 60% micro cells loading. MATLINE® is designed for use as a core material in FRP sandwich construction. Uses of MATLINE® There are many features of this non-woven, polyester fabric that make it useful in cored FRP structures. Whether your laminate requires additional stiffness or you wish to mask fiber print through, MATLINE® is the core material that will meet your needs. MATLINE® increases stiffness, reduces weight and eliminates print-through of fiber patterns. MATLINE® displays excellent inter-laminate adhesion, good conformability in tight radii, and will not transfer a pattern to the surface as other core materials. A variety of industries will find MATLINE® invaluable for laminate design. As an aid for stiffness, MATLINE® is available in a wide range of thicknesses. When you want to hide fiber prominence and produce a class A finish, this the one material to choose. Coosa Composites Coosa Composites manufactures high-density, fiberglassreinforced polyurethane foam panels that are used as a structural and non-structural components for OEM suppliers in the marine, transportation, aeronautical and numerous other industries. Coosa board is used as a plywood replacement in various applications. High strength to weight ratio and very low water absorption are only two of the many advantages when being compared to plywood. Coosa Composites produces board in many densities and thicknesses. Available in 4 x 8 foot and 4 x 91/2 foot sheets. Nida Core (Below) Sandwich construction has been well established in the composites industry for well over 40 years. Naval designers specify sandwich construction for much the same reason architects use I-BEAMS and trusses: to increase stiffness and strength while at the same time decrease weight. The honeycomb core in a sandwich laminate acts much the same as the web in the I-BEAM by connecting the load bearing skins. The increase in stiffness is directly related to the height of the web (or thickness of the core). Nida Core offers a variety of structural polypropylene honeycomb. Lightweight core material designed to be a resilient, strong, and noise absorbing laminate bulker. Available in 4 ft. x 7 ft. sheets in various thicknesses.

26

Polyisocyanate Foam Sheets (Below) These foam sheets are used to provide bulkness and stiffness when sandwhiched between layers of mat. Used for internal shapes for stringers and for hat sections. Comes in stock thicknessess of 1”, 1 1/2” and 2”. Standard sheet size is 48’ x 96”. Other thicknesses available at a special order request.

Polyester Safety Information

All sales of products by Advanced Plastics as described herein are made solely on condition that our customers comply with applicable health and safety laws, regulations and orders relating to the handling of our products in the workplace. Before using, read the following information and both the product label and Material Safety Data Sheet pertaining to each product applicable. Most polyester resins contain styrene. Styrene can cause eye, skin and respiratory tract irritation. Avoid contact with eyes, skin and clothing. Impermeable gloves, safety eyewear and protective clothing should be worn during use to avoid skin and eye contact. Wash thoroughly after use. Styrene is a solvent and may be harmful if inhaled. Reports have associated repeated and prolonged occupational overexposure to solvents with permanent brain and nervous system damage. Extended exposure to styrene at concentrations above the recommended exposure limits may cause central nervous system depression causing dizziness, headaches or nausea and if overexposure is continued indefinitely, loss of consciousness, liver and kidney damage. Do not breathe or ingest vapor, spray mists and dusts caused by applying, sanding, grinding and sawing polyester products. Wear an appropriate NIOSH/MSHA approved, properly fitted, respirator during application and use of these products until vapors, mists and dusts are exhausted, unless air monitoring demonstrates vapors, mists and dusts are below applicable exposure limits. Follow respirator manufacturer’s directions for respirator use. The International Agency For Research on Cancer (IARC) has reclassified styrene as a Group 2B "possibly carcinogenic to humans". This new classification is not based on new health data relating to either humans or animals, but on a change in the IARC classification system. The Styrene Information and Research Center does not agree with the reclassification and has published the following statement: "Recently published studies tracing 50,000 workers exposed to high occupational levels of styrene over a period of 45 years showed no association between styrene and cancer, no increase in cancer among styrene workers (as opposed to the average among all workers), and no increase in mortality related to styrene". Styrene is classified by OSHA and the Department of Transportation as a flammable liquid. Flammable polyester products should be kept away from heat, sparks, and flame. Lighting and other electrical systems in the work place should be vapor-proof and protected from breakage. Vapors from styrene may cause flash fire. Styrene vapors are heavier than air and may concentrate in the lower levels of molds and the work area. General clean air dilution or local exhaust ventilation should be provided in volume and pattern to keep vapors well below the lower exposure limit and all are contaminants (vapor, mists and dusts) below the current permissible exposure limits in the mixing, application, curing and repair areas. If the label or Material Safety Data Sheet indicates lead or lead chromate is present, do not use on toys, furniture or surfaces that might be chewed by children. Wash hands thoroughly after using and before smoking or eating. Longterm overexposure by inhalation or ingestion of mists and dusts from products containing lead compounds and lead chromate can cause harmful effects to the urinary, blood, reproductive and nervous systems and may create risk of cancer. Use a respirator as explained above in this information sheet. Some polyester products may contain additional hazardous ingredients. To determine the hazardous ingredients present, their applicable exposure limits and other safety information, read the Material Safety Data Sheet for each product before using. First Aid: In case of eye contact, flush immediately with plenty of water for at lease 15 minutes and get medical attention; for skin, wash thoroughly with soap and water. If affected by inhalation of vapors or spray mist, remove to fresh air. If swallowed, get medical attention. Labeling: Polyester products have a least two components that must be mixed before use. Any mixture of components will have hazards of all components. Before opening the packages, read all warning labels. Observe all precautions. Storage: Keep polyester containers closed when not in use. In case of spillage, absorb with inert material and dispose of in accordance with applicable regulations. Emptied containers may retain hazardous residue. Do not cut, puncture or weld near these containers. Follow container label warnings until containers are thoroughly cleaned or destroyed. Note: Advanced Plastics would like to thank Cook Composites and Polymers for their gracious consent in allowing us to extract the above information from their copyrighted data sheets and informational bulletins.
