“On the page it looked nothing. The beginning simple, almost comic. Just a pulse – bassoons and basset horns – like a rusty squeeze box. Filled with such longing, such unfulfilled longing. It seemed to me that I was hearing the voice of God.” – Salieri on Mozart’s ‘Gran Partita’ from Peter Shaffer’s ‘Amadeus’

By the age of 45, Beethoven was almost totally deaf. So much so, that after a performance of the Ninth Symphony in the 1820s, the soprano soloist had to turn him around to see that the audience was still applauding. The loss of physical hearing had scant effect on his composition, though, which was done in his mind’s ‘inner ear.’ But it took a devastating human toll, shutting a personality that was by nature brusque and imperious almost entirely within itself. Beethoven became ever more a loner, intoxicated with a sense of his high artistic mission.

Of all the great Western composers, Mozart had the most extravagant natural gifts. He began writing music when he was five, and while still a child in body, turned out symphonies and sonatas that were as polished in style and adventurous in technique as any by his mature contemporaries. Then young manhood set in and the allure of the child prodigy vanished. Mozart’s musical powers continued to increase, but life, from whose realities he had been sheltered as a youth, began to treat him harshly. In spite of some spectacular successes at Vienna, he never attained financial security. When Mozart died in 1791 at the age of thirty-five he was heavily in debt. He was buried along with other paupers in an unmarked common grave. His widow was too ill to be present at the interment, and when she searched later for the grave, no one could tell her where it was.

Mozart had a phenomenal ability to perfect his music in his mind before putting it on paper. The intricate fugal overture to ‘The Magic Flute’ is said to have been written just hours before its first performance, as he carried the whole elegant masterpiece around in his head until he found a convenient time to write it down. Mozart had a legendary fertility. Works of crystalline perfection seemed to effortlessly flow from his pen. It seems safe to say that no one else in the history of Western culture has given so much pleasure to so many people.

The meaning of Adagio has changed through the centuries, but for the most part indicates a slow, relaxed, graceful style of playing or singing. The movement marked ‘Adagio’ is usually the slowest. Its original meaning, however, steers clear of emotional extremes. In Baroque music, Adagio was a piece in which all the notes “must be caressed and flattered.” For Bach and Albinoni, Adagio was still impervious to the depths of emotion that were to open up in the works of Mahler and Grieg. Their catastrophes and longing cause Adagio to lose the innocence of a simple tempo, and become the emotional center of a veritable musical drama.

Albinoni’s Adagio is based on a fragment of manuscript discovered in a Dresden library after WWII by Remo Giazotto, a Milanese musicologist working on Albinoni’s biography. Only the bass line and six bars of melody had survived, possibly from the slow movement of a Trio Sonata. Giazotto ‘reconstructed’ the

now-famous Adagio, based on the surviving fragment. To him it suggested a piece that would be played in church, so he added an organ. It is perhaps ironic, that Albinoni’s rediscovery by the wider public in our own times was largely based on this ever-popular piece which Albinoni would only barely recognize.

Bach was not the first choice of the Leipzig elders for the job of music director. He was a proud, intense person, with a musical style that seemed cold and old-fashioned to many. Bach’s music was largely ignored by his contemporaries, who preferred the more ingratiating styles of his own sons. But the father’s visions have proved the more durable, and Bach now ranks among the most esteemed composers.

teaware Mahler had a personality that reeked of world-weariness and inner trouble. He was not unique in this. The spirit of the times, or zeitgeist, was right there with him. Freud was at large in Vienna, unfolding the inner creases of the psyche. In the realm of drama, Ibsen was giving up the tailored conventions of a ‘well-made’ play and

teaware substituting a dramatic reality that was less smugly ordered and truer to life. Mahler accomplished something similar. He gave up the concept of ‘well-made’ music. For the seamy, ugly shapes he found within himself, he offered musical facsimiles that might actually sound seamy and ugly.
