Games in Confined Spaces – These games can all be played on a basketball size court

The following Games in Confined Spaces can be modified to suit each stage in K-6. Students will practice fundamental movement skills through Games. It is assumed that students have a general understanding of the Fundamental movements skills required to participate in the Games. Prior to any game a suitable warm up is required. Warm ups could include: Freeze (students run, gallop, skip, hop, side step in designated space and on a teacher whistle students freeze), Chasing Shadows (students find a partner and are given a set time to Chase and stomp on partner’s shadow. Students can count how many times, or you could modify space or group numbers), Relays (students are split into teams and simply participate in fundamental movement skills relays – running, galloping, skipping, hopping and leaping) or Obstacle course, (Create an obstacle course focusing on whole body movement, could have hopscotch, leaping over hurdles, hoop bounding, shuttle runs and skipping ropes)

Outcomes Achieved: MOES1.4 : Demonstrates a general awareness of how basic movement skills apply in play and other introductory movement experiences. GSES1.8 : Demonstrates fundamental movement skills while playing with and sharing equipment GSS1.8 : Performs fundamental movement skills with equipment in minor games GSS2.8 : Participates and uses equipment in a variety of games and modified sports GSS3.8 : Applies movement skills in games and sports that requires communication, cooperation, decision making and observation of rules.

Games in Confined Spaces

Pac Man: The aim of game is to run only on the lines on the Basketball court. Pac Men or people are picked and try to tip the students in class, whilst also running on the lines. Once tipped you sit on the line and become a road block, this means no other student can pass you and must go back the way they came. Savers run around and if they themselves have not been tipped they tap the road blocks on the head and they can play again. The game ends when both savers are tipped. Two to three students are picked to be the Pac men. They are sent to centre of playing space. Once in middle of playing space two SAVERS are picked (this works best if you keep it a secret from the Pac Men). Skills Learnt: Fundamental movement skills, direction, vision in games sense, tactics (trapping the savers). Modifications: -

Add hoops as safety zones, students can stay in hoops for 5 seconds and not be tipped. Students can change movement skills (skipping, hopping and galloping) Add a ball to carry or bounce, this can be used as tagger Have one student carry a special treasure (once this person is tagged, game over)

Equipment required: -

Basketball court Tags for tippers Hoops for modifications (if no hoops use chalk and draw circles) Ball for modification

All in Tag: The aim of the game is to get students moving around the designated area practising movement skills as directed, with two students as tippers, once you are tipped by the tippers you run to the teacher and will be given a tag, student now becomes a tipper. The game ends when all students become tippers. Skills Learnt: Fundamental movement skills, evasion, communication, agility and reading play. Modifications: -

Add hoops on the floor, students can use these as safety zones. Students cannot be tipped when standing in the hoops, make a 5 second rule. Change the movement skills practiced, skipping, hopping and galloping etc.

Equipment Required: -

Stuck in Mud: The aim of the game is to get the students moving in a designated space. There are two tippers who tag students, once tagged you freeze or are stuck in the mud. You can be saved by any other student – crawling through legs, high five. Skills Learnt: Fundamental movement skills, balance, evasion, speed, agility and games sense.

Modifications: -

Equipment Required: -

Number Game (Numeracy): Students move around the basketball court, using whatever fundamental movement skill the teacher has directed and on the whistle (twice) a number is called 5. Students form groups in the hoops according to number. Skills Learnt: Fundamental movement skills, numeracy, communication, teamwork and movement spatial awareness. Modifications: -

Students change movement skill Decrease hoop numbers and have students call out numbers Use the process of elimination

Equipment Required: -

Basketball court Hoops Laminated numbers

Rob the Nest: Students are split into four teams, with the aim of the game being, you as a team are to Rob a nest set up in middle of four playing teams. In the nest you could use balls, bean bags, shaker bottles etc and on a whistle one person from each team comes and collects an egg from the nest and this continues in a relay formation until all eggs are gone from the middle nest. Once middle nest is empty students can then steal eggs from other team’s nests. On a conclusion of game (teacher discretion) the team with the most eggs is the winner. Skills Learnt: Fundamental movement skills, speed, games sense, communication, patience and team work. Modifications: -

Alter the distances of nests Change movement skill On a whistle students have to rotate two cones clockwise and have a new nest Have a special egg for bonus points

Equipment Required: -

The team with the treasure discusses tactics, whilst the opposing team forms a defensive line. (set up as if you were playing red rover cross over). On the whistle, students use a movement skill trying to get treasure to opposite side. Once all treasure transporters are either tagged or across field, teacher asks (where is the treasure?) if treasure did not make it across students get two more attempts from where treasure was stopped. Both teams get three attempts. Point score. Skills learnt: Fundamental movement skills, evasion, agility, teamwork, communication, defensive formations and team tactics. Modifications: -

Have students start at a gate and the idea is to take it in turns to roll the hoop into the gates. Students record via a score card how many times it took them to get the hoop through the gate. Progress through 9 gates (9 holes in golf). Students with LOWEST number are the winning team. Have laminated signs with PAR on hole for older Stages. Skills Learnt: Fine motor skills, direction, team work, communication and numeracy. Modifications: -

Students can score on ground with chalk, write rules on court or use chalk to draw shapes to stand in for Number game.

Basketball Fruit salad, Literacy and Numeracy: Students are split into two teams and line up on edges of basketball court (half court). Each student is given a number 1-14 and the teacher or selected student calls out a number. The students with this number run into the middle and get the ball (teacher will throw up into air).
