Life in Sydney

Sydney is in the top five of the 50 best cities in the world in which to live, work and study,* above New York and London. Set around the world’s largest natural harbour, Sydney is home to beautiful golden beaches, world-class museums and art galleries, delicious fresh food, and a calendar of exciting events and festivals.

Living on or close to campus can enhance your university experience as you’ll be more easily able to immerse yourself in all the possibilities of the student lifestyle.

You can get involved with activities inside and outside the classroom, make new friends, and gain invaluable life experience.

Student Accommodation Services Whether you’re moving from overseas, interstate or around the corner from the family home, choosing where to live may be one of the biggest decisions you’ll make when starting university. But you don’t need to figure it all out on your own. Start by contacting our Student Accommodation Services – we can give you advice on where to live, how much it’s likely to cost, and how to find and secure a place. Once you’re enrolled at university you can browse ads for shared living accommodation on our database – accessible only to our students and staff. This service also allows you to register for University residence halls on or near Camperdown/ Darlington Campus, such as Abercrombie Student Accommodation, Darlington House, Selle House, Terraces and the Queen Mary Building. If you’re going to be based at our Camden Campus (studying agriculture or veterinary science), you could live at Nepean Lodge or Nepean Hall.

If you will be a health sciences student studying at the Cumberland Campus, you could live at Yannadah. We can also give you advice about independently-run student housing, such as Sydney University Village, Urbanest on Cleveland, Stucco Student Cooperative Living and the eight private residential colleges. Accommodation scholarships Each year, we offer a number of accommodation scholarships to new students. If you are a domestic student, you can apply for these through the Universities Admissions Centre (UAC) at the same time as you are applying for university. These scholarships offer a half rental rebate for the entire academic year. Returning students may also be eligible for accommodation scholarships. To find out more, talk to Student Accommodation Services.

Apply Each accommodation provider has its own application procedures, dates and requirements. We encourage you to start the process as early as possible, as admission can be highly competitive. Check out each of the provider’s websites (listed throughout this guide) for more details. Eligibility All University residence halls and private residential colleges are open to domestic and international applicants of all religious and cultural backgrounds, and of any level (undergraduate or postgraduate).

Student Accommodation Services

Fees For an indication of the average weekly fees across the various accommodation types, see the table on page 30. To confirm the most upto-date costs, we recommend you contact the providers directly. New to Sydney? We run accommodation information sessions during Orientation Week (1-3 March 2017). These sessions tell you about housing options on and off campus, and some of the financial assistance (such as accommodation scholarships), that you may be eligible for.

Share houses Joining or starting your own share-house can be a great way to make new friends and explore what our vibrant city has to offer.

These are some popular websites for finding a place to live in Sydney:

Or perhaps you want the peace and privacy of your own studio unit.

−− gumtree.com.au

Either way, the internet is an excellent search tool.

−− flatmates.com.au −− flatmatefinders.com.au −− domain.com.au/rent −− realestate.com.au/rent Just type in your price range and suburbs (also try ‘Inner West’ or ‘Inner Sydney’).

Sydney’s suburbs each have their own unique flavour and feel. Chippendale, Glebe, Newtown and Redfern are an easy walk from our main Camperdown/ Darlington Campus.

Suburbs near campus

Suburbs near campus

Chippendale One of Sydney’s newest urban hotspots, Chippendale is a place of creativity, world‑class architecture, cool cafes and dessert bars. The suburb is bordered by Victoria Park (with an outdoor swimming pool) and Central Station – the inner city’s transport hub.

Image: Vivid Sydney at Central Park, Image Keith McInnes; Destination NSW

Page 7

A vibrant space that has drawn in an eclectic mix of residents and visitors from all walks of life, Chippendale is home to Central Park – a hidden enclave amongst the concrete jungle. Must-sees include Koi, Spice Alley and Doughnut Time.

sydney.edu.au/accommodation Accommodation Guide 2017 The University of Sydney Page 8

Glebe A funky village by the bay, Glebe has an abundant range of vegan café fare, three-storey bookstores and stunning harbour views down on Blackwattle Bay. Although it’s not on a train line, the 431/433 bus services are frequent and can get you into the city in less than 20 minutes, or you can walk in 30-40 minutes. The 370 service connects you to the Darlington end of campus, as well as Newtown and Coogee beach.

Newtown Long regarded as Sydney’s bohemian capital, Newtown is a cheerful contrast of organic coffee shops, vintage thrift stores, grungy political street art and the inescapable scent of Nag Champa incense. Vegan eco-friendly shops sit alongside tattoo parlours, cosy wine bars and a seemingly endless number of Thai restaurants and frozen yoghurt sellers. All images: James Horan; Destination NSW

Redfern Bordering the southern end of campus is unassumingly cool Redfern. Characterised by a significant Indigenous and migrant history, the community today has a richly diverse and multicultural flavour. The streets are lined with tall, narrow terraces that date back to the late 1800s – home to artisanal bakeries, quirky cafes and lively bars.

“Being right in the heart of Sydney, you are so close to everything: the cafès of Glebe, the shops of Newtown. There’s a real sense of energy and life.”

sydney.edu.au/accommodation Accommodation Guide 2017

Your on-campus experience The University residence halls provide funding for students to run events and programs. Our residents have started a ukulele orchestra, organised surfing and fencing classes, hosted cooking classes and created an environmental interest group. You will receive all the support you need with our Residential Advisors and live-in staff members running key programs in each hall to help support your health, wellbeing and academic progression. The ‘Sydney Experience’ Our central accommodation office runs programs that enable you to get to know other students living on campus. The Student Experience team hosts initiatives like the Intramural Sporting Cups, the Thomas Whalan Cup for men and the Liane Tooth Cup for Women, the Entrepreneurs and Wellbeing learning communities, and the Residential Halls Research Journal. You can apply for University residence halls year round, but note that most places are at capacity well before the academic year. To apply, visit
