MEDICAL SKILLS AND SERVICES Course # 8400320 1 credit This course is designed to give students an opportunity to apply knowledge and skills related to the area of Health Science career clusters. The content includes but is not limited to practical generic skills in health occupations. Instruction and learning activities are provided in a laboratory setting using hands on experience with the equipment, materials, and technology appropriate to healthcare careers. HEALTH SCIENCE 1 Course # 8417100 1 credit This course is part of the secondary Health Core consisting of an overview of the human body, both structurally and functionally with emphasis on the pathophysiology and transmission of disease. Medical terminology is an integral part of the course. This course is required for all pathways within the Health Academy curriculum HEALTH SCIENCE 2 Course # 8417110 1 credit Prerequisite: Health Science 1 This course is part of the secondary Health Care designed to provide the student with an in depth knowledge of the healthcare system and associated occupations. Emphasis is placed on communication and interpersonal skills, use of technology, ethics and development of critical thinking skills. Students will job shadow various professionals in the healthcare facility throughout the course. Transportation and PPD required. A negative PPD report is required and may be obtained from the student’s healthcare provider or the Health Department. Forms may be obtained from the Health Science 2 Instructor. EMERGENCY MEDICAL RESPONDER 3 Course # 8417170 1 credit Prerequisites: Health Science & Health Science 2 This is an instructional program that prepares the student to provide initial care to sick or injured persons or as ambulance drivers and attendants. An Emergency Medical Responder may use this training for employment. The Emergency Medical Responder may include law enforcement, lifeguard, fire services, fire services, or basic life support-non-licensed personnel who act as part of an Emergency Medical Service team. Transportation and PPD required. The clinical component of this course will include ride-alongs with Citrus County EMS personnel on an ambulance. Following successful completion of the course the student will be eligible to take the National Healthcare Foundation Skill Standard Assessment NREMT003 pending course approval by the Florida Department of Insurance and the Bureau of Emergency Medical Services within the Department of Health. DENTAL AIDE 3 Course # 8417141 1 credit Prerequisites: Health Science 1 & Health Science 2 This course provides classroom theory and practical applications in tasks related to dental office asepsis and sterilization and disinfection procedures in the dental environment. It is designed to prepare completers for employment as dental aides specializing as dental sterilization technicians. It also provides an introduction to dentistry and dental assisting. This class includes a clinical component. Students are required to perform basic tasks relating to dental office asepsis and disinfection in a dental office under the guidance of the dental office staff. Observations and minimal participation in dental procedures may also be required .

NURSING ASSISTING 3 Course # 8417211 1 credit Prerequisites: Health Science 1 & Health Science 2 This course is designed to prepare students for employment as Nursing Assistants in Nursing Homes, Hospitals, or other healthcare facilities. The content includes but is not limited to interpersonal skills, medical terminology, safe efficient work, gerontology, nutrition, health and safety including cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and employability skills. The Florida Board of Nursing Board of Health approves this course. The clinical component consists of no less than 40 hours in the healthcare setting with 20 hours of clinical experience mandated at a licensed nursing home. Students enrolled in this course are to perform hands on skills in the clinical setting which include but are not limited to bathing, oral care, personal hygiene, feeding, transfers, toileting, vital signs and in some circumstances post-mortem care and CPR. *Special note - Students enrolled in this course are required to be fingerprinted and undergo a level 2 FBI background check. Fingerprints must be done at the facility designated by Prometric, the testing company for the state. Students will also undergo drug testing at SRRMC prior to beginning clinical rotations. More information will be given at the start of the class. PRINCIPLES OF BIOMEDICAL SCIENCE Course # 8708110 1 credit This course is designed to provide an overview of all the courses in the biomedical program and lay the scientific foundation for subsequent courses. Students investigate the human body systems and various health conditions. Human physiology, medicine, research processes and bioformatics are introduced. Key biological concepts including, homeostasis, metabolism, inheritance of traits, and defense against disease are embedded in the curriculum. Students will learn engineering principles, including the design process, feedback loops, and relationship of structure to function. HUMAN BODY SYSTEMS Course # 8708120 1 credit Students examine the interaction of body systems as they explore, identify, communication, power, movement, protection and homeostasis. Students design experiments, investigate the structures and functions of the human body, and use data acquisition software to monitor body functions such as muscle movements, reflex and voluntary actions, and respiration. Exploring science in action, students build organs and tissues on a skeletal manikin, work through interesting real world cases and often play the role of biomedical professionals to solve medical mysteries. BIOMEDICAL INTERVENTIONS Course # 8708130 1 credit Students investigate the variety of interventions in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of disease as they follow the lives of a fictitious family. The course is a “How – To” manual for maintaining overall health and homeostasis in the body as students explore how to prevent and fight infection; how to screen and evaluate the code in Human DNA; how to prevent, diagnose and treat cancer; and how to prevail when the organs of the body begin to fail. Through these scenarios, students are exposed to the pharmacology, medical devices, and diagnostics. BIOMEDICAL INNOVATIONS Course # 8708140 1 credit This is a course designed to investigate biomedical problems related to the clinical setting. Students will design an effective emergency care center, explore the variety of research, study designs available and investigate how to set up and conduct valid and reliable studies. Exploration and evaluation of public health issues will be explored using knowledge of epidemiology, disease process and public health resources.*these courses are part of the Project Lead the Way Biomedical Science Program.www.pltw.org
