ABOUT US 2 Lying just south of the equator, Tanzania is East Africa’s largest country, and an immensely rewarding place to visit. There are several world-famous attractions: the plains of the Serengeti with its migration of herd of wildebeest and zebras, Ngorongoro Crater, snow-capped Mount Kilimanjaro and Zanzibar, with its idyllic palm-fringed beaches and historic Stone Town. Further there is Lake Victoria, on the Kenya-Uganda-Tanzania border. This is the largest lake in Africa and is traditionally named as the source of the Nile.

An African Safari is an unforgettable travel experience, it touches something deep within us and it is an experience that will never be forgotten. A trip to Tanzania is both intriguing and exciting, created by the fascinating balance between the wildlife, the landscapes and its people. Tanzania Adventure is a local company, founded by experienced members of the travel industry. It is a joint venture of two travel companies: in Arusha (Tanzania 2000 Adventure, official tour operator, TALA license: 00008931, TATO member)
and one in Zanzibar (Tanzania Adventure Tours, official tour operator). With long years of experience in leading Safaris throughout Tanzania, the staff of Tanzania Adventure knows how to please you. Our guides are trained professionals committed to offering you the most intriguing and informative Tanzania safari experience. All are fluent in English and Swahili, and we do have German, Italian, French and Spanish speaking guides. They are expert game trackers with extensive knowledge about wildlife, geography, flora and fauna as well as an insightful awareness of the people, their history and culture. Above all, our guides possess a sincere respect and appreciation for the environment, the animal life, and the natural wonders that make Tanzania the amazing place that it is. At Tanzania Adventure, we do not have regular departures like most tour operators in Tanzania, instead we customise each itinerary to suit the individual’s or group’s wishes. Your timings are only limited by flight schedules – and your imagination!
We are specialised in honeymoon travel, Safari in an exclusive African style and Zanzibar holidays in romantic hotels on Zanzibar, furthermore in group travel, family Safaris and budget camping Safaris.

Yet there’s a lot more to Tanzania than these obvious highlights. Almost everywhere you go you’ll find interesting wildlife and inspiring landscapes (over forty percent of the country is protected in some form or other) ranging from forest-covered volcanic peaks to dusty savannah populated by elephants, antelopes, lions, leopards and cheetahs.

FACTS ABOUT THE COUNTRY Location: Eastern Africa, bordering the Indian Ocean, between Kenya and Mozambique Geographic coordinates: 6 00 S, 35 00 E Area: Total: 945,090 sq km Note: includes the islands of Mafia, Pemba, and Zanzibar Coastline: 1,424 km Language: English, Swahili Capital City: Dar es Salaam Population: 37 million Telephone Calling Code(s): +225 Electricity: 230V, 50 Hz Currency: 1 US$ = 1180 Tanzanian Shillings (Oct 08)

Tanzania is one of the four most naturally diverse nations on earth: it contains Africa’s second-largest number of bird species (around 1500), the continent’s biggest mammal population and three-quarters of East Africa’s plant species (over ten thousand). Add to this the country’s rich ethnic diversity, some superb hiking and other activities like snorkeling and diving, and you have the makings of a holiday of a lifetime. For all its natural diversity, Tanzania’s best asset is its people: friendly, welcoming, unassumingly proud and yet reserved - you’ll be treated with uncommon warmth and courtesy wherever you go, and genuine friendships are easily made. The best known tribe are the Maasai, a pastoralist cattle-herding people who inhabit the region around the safari parks in the north, yet there are at least 127 other tribes in Tanzania, perhaps not as visually colourful as the red- robed, spear-carrying Maasai warriors, but with equally rich traditions, histories, customs, beliefs and music, much of which survive despite the ravages of colonialism, modernity and Christianity. For many years, only those with months on their hands had the privilege of really getting to know these people, but since 1995, an award-winning cultural tourism program has broken new ground in enabling tourists to experience for themselves local life in an intimate and inevitably fascinating way. The climate of Tanzania ranges from hot and humid on the coast, to a more temperate climate in the elevated centre of the country. Tanzania has two rainy seasons; a long heavy one from March to May, and a shorter, lighter one from November to January.

8 Days Kilimanjaro Climb – Machame Route

Day 4: Kilimanjaro Climb - Shira Camp to Barranco Camp We’ll draw nearer the peak as we get closer to the Lava Tower. The trek becomes a bit more strenuous as the trail steepens on the approach to the lava Tower, a 300 foot tall volcanic plug which marks an exposed pass at 15,000 feet. In the afternoon, descend the steep track into the Great Barranco Valley. Barranco Camp is set on a col (flat area) enclosed on three sides with steep valley walls and the Kibo massif itself. Hanging glaciers glint in the sunshine above, amidst the eerie landscape of plants such as the giant groundsels (Senecio Kilimanjari), and the uniquely endemic Giant Lobelia. Then we slowly ascent to our overnight stop at Barranco Camp (12,950 feet, 5-6 hours of walking). This day and the following day will be your acclimatisation day.

Day 5: Kilimanjaro Climb - Barranco Camp to Karanga Valley Camp The day will begin with a descent into the Gorge, before we climb its eastern wall where we will enjoy views of Kilimanjaro’s ice fields, an equatorial anomaly. We will continue trekking until we reach our camp in Karanga Valley (13,900 feet, 4-5 hours of walking).

Day 6: Kilimanjaro Climb - Karanga Valley Camp to Barafu Camp

This is one of the most popular routes, 26 km long, and it is considered the most beautiful route up Kilimanjaro. With a gradual ascend through the forest you emerge to see wide views of the moorland on Shira plateau, Kibo and Western Breach. The different kinds of vegetation found along the route make it the most scenic route. We are approaching the summit with an acclimatisation day by walking in the same heights (Barafu Camp to Karranga Valley Camp), and another day by stopping at Karranga Valley camp (we are one of few tour operators offering this). There are no mountain huts on this route; the accommodation is on mountain camp sites. The route done in six days is physically challenging for most people. The last two days (the trek from Barranco to Barafu and then the overnight trek to the summit) require mental and physical toughness, due to the high altitude and short amount of time to rest before the overnight summit attempt.

Day 1: Arrive in Arusha Kilimanjaro Airport We’ll meet for an introductory briefing upon our arrival in Arusha, before transferring to the Oasis Lodge for the evening.

12

Day 2: Kilimanjaro Climb - Arusha to Machame Camp At 7:30 a.m., we’ll transfer to the Machame Park Gate (5,950 ft./ 1,815 mt.). After registering with the park authority, we’ll begin our climb through the lush forest. Trekkers will likely hear the many exotic birds in the canopy above, and many even see black & white colobus monkeys and sykes monkeys as they hike along the knotted roots and mud on the forest floor. We’ll continue on to some heath land before reaching our overnight camp at Machame Camp (9,850 feet, 6-7 hours of walking), just above the forest zone. The trek is quite long, thus not steep.

Day 3: Kilimanjaro Climb - Machame Camp to Shira Camp Today’s segment of the ascent will continue across beautiful heath land and alpine moorland with magnificent views of Kilimanjaro Peak. We begin up the steep track through a savannah of tall grasses, and trees of Giant Heather and Erica. Scramble around large boulders as you enter the moorland zone, marked by lobelia and senecio plants, and volcanic rocks draped with lichen beards, which protect wild alpine flowers growing at their bases. We’ll overnight at Shira Camp (12,600 feet, 5-6 hours of walking).

We’ll trek up through the Karanga Valley, the trail turns steadily uphill, following the lava ridge to the Barafu camp. The temperature will grow colder and the landscape more sparse as we near Barafu Camp. Barafu Camp is set on a small, exposed flat area on a ridge, acting as a base camp from which you will make your summit attempt at midnight tonight. Barafu camp (15,200 feet, 6-7 hours of walking).

Day 7: Kilimanjaro Climb - Barafu Camp to Summit to Mweka Camp Just after midnight we start of a challenging trek(12-17 hours of trekking). You begin trekking at 12:30 to 1am, passing between the Rebmann and Tarzel glaciers to the rim at Stella Point. The temperatures range from just below freezing at midnight, to between 10 deg. F (-12 deg. C) to –10 F. (-23 deg. C) just before dawn at the summit. As dawn nears, we’ll summit at Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa at 19,340 feet. Uhuru will be the culmination of - and the reward for - 6-7 hours of strenuous hiking. We’ll then descend back to Barafu Camp, resting for a while before continuing our descent to Mweka Camp (9,840 feet, 3-4 hours of walking on the descent).

Day 8: Kilimanjaro Climb - Mweka Camp to Park Gate, transfer to Arusha We’ll make our final descent to the park gate, a walk of about 3 or 4 hours. After bidding our farewells to our guide and porters, we’ll drive to Arusha.

The balloon ride At 5:00am, Serengeti Balloon Safaris will collect you from your central Serengeti lodge or camp, and transfer you by Landrover to our launch site near Maasai Kopjes. Here you will meet your pilot, receive a briefing and watch the inflation of your balloon. At dawn we take off, rising with the sun, and float in whichever direction the morning wind takes us. Your pilot can control the altitude of your balloon precisely: at times you will be flying at treetop height, and sometimes even lower, offering a unique perspective and great photo opportunities of the wildlife below. At other times he will ascend to 1000 ft. (300m) or more to see the enormity and wonderful panorama of the Serengeti. From time to time the pilot increases the heat in the balloon with the powerful whisper burners. In between these burns, there is silence apart from nature’s sounds below. The flight will last about one hour depending on the aerodynamic conditions. Upon landing, you will celebrate with champagne before sitting down to a full English breakfast prepared and served in the bush in an ‘Out of Africa’ style with bone china, linen table cloths, King’s silver and other nostalgic features. After a champagne breakfast you will receive your Serengeti Balloon Safari certificate. Then we’ll drive you back to Seronera Lodge game viewing en-route. At 9:30am you will arrive at Seronera ready to continue your day’s activities.

A Balloon safari is a romantic and evocative way to experience the beauty of East Africa’s wilderness. As you fly above in absolute silence, you can watch the plains teeming with herds of wild life down below in the early morning sun. Balloon safaris generally begin around 6am and take 1-2 hours. You travel about 12km and have a chance to see the early morning ongoings in the Serengeti. The Serengeti is the only place from which balloon safaris take off. There are few designated sites in the Seronera area where disturbances to animals are kept to a minimum. Your safari vehicle drops you off at the take off site and picks you up from your landing site. This amazing and unique experience is celebrated with a champagne breakfast in the bush, a suitable end to your memorable flight in the wild. Maximum in a balloon: 16 Adults

Serengeti National Park The park covers 14,763 sq km of endless rolling plains, which reach up to the Kenyan border and extends almost to Lake Victoria. The park is flourishing with magnificent wildlife. An estimated 3 million large animals roam the plains. People of the Maasai Tribe called it Siringitu - ‘the place where the land moves on forever.’ The Serengeti is known as one of the best wildlife sanctuary in the world. Serengeti is renown for the migration of animals. Every October and November, more than a million wildebeest and about 220,000 zebras travel south from the northern hills to the southern plains for the short tropical rains, and then journey west and north after the long rains in April to June. The animals’ ancient instinct to move is so strong that no drought, gorge or crocodile infested river can hold them back.

Wildlife The Serengeti boasts large herds of antelope including Patterson’s eland, Klipspringer, Dikdik, Zebra, gazelles, lion, impala, leopard, cheetah, hyena and other larger mammals like the rhino, giraffe, elephant and hippopotamus. Nearly 500 species of birds have been recorded in the park. The Serengeti is an opportunity for one of the best game-viewing in Africa.

When to visit The Serengeti’s climate is warm and dry. The tropical rainy season is from March to May, with short rains from October to November. The Serengeti is lush and green after the rains, but a steady drying up follows which inhibits plant growth and encourages the animals to migrate in search of waters. With altitudes ranging from 920 to 1,830 metres average temperatures vary from 15 degrees to 26 degrees Celsius. The coldest temperatures are experienced from June to October.

Serengeti Sopa Lodge The Serengeti Sopa Lodge is located in the Nyarboro Hills in the south west of the Serengeti National Park and is the only tourism development in this section of the Park. Being situated on the slopes of the hills the lodges offers magnificent views over the 14,763sq km (5,200sq. mile) expanse of the National Park, Tanzania’s largest wildlife conservation area. With its 75 rooms and the swimming pool, the lodge offers the same comfort as Ngorongoro Sopa Lodge. It is located 35 km from the Seronera airstrip.

Serengeti Serena Lodge The lodge is set high on a hill with breathtaking vistas of sweeping grasslands and the unspoiled wilderness landscape of the Serengeti plains. Big game feed in full view of the lodge. The lodge design is simple but stunning. Inspired by a traditional African village, separate rondawel “huts” house the luxury guest rooms that have their own view of the vast Serengeti plains. A delightful water feature runs through the main public areas, creating a natural source of waterborne plants. All 66 guest rooms have private balconies with views of the Serengeti plains.

Kirawira Tented Camp Kirawira Luxury tented Camp is set against the imposing backdrop of the western Serengeti. Situated on a hill with commanding views of endless savanna, the luxury tented camp beckons you to experience the soul of the African wilderness. The camp is built in the remote regions of the Grumeti River and is home to a wide variety of wildlife. Guests at Kirawira Camp may be lucky to witness the magnificent spectacle of millions of wildebeest crossing the Grumeti River during their migration across the Serengeti plains. Guests enjoy the warm hospitality, the high standard of personalized attention, accommodation, meals and service.

Migration Camp The Camp is located in the Northern Corridor of the park, on the main wildebeest migration route between the Serengeti and the Maasai Mara, along the banks of the Grumeti River. It is raised up on the side of an impressive ‘kopje’ known as Poacher’s Lookout, with broad views north over the undulating Serengeti hills and beyond to the plains of the Maasai Mara. Just 20 luxury safari tents are arranged in a pretty random fashion around the lodge. Each tent has an en suite bathroom, with permanent plumbing and electricity, provided by a generator evenings and mornings. There is also a swimming pool. The migration seasons at camp are centred between July and November when the herds pass through the area, sometimes crossing the river right in front of camp. Game viewing from the breakfast terrace can be superb. Additionally there is good resident game throughout the year, especially lion, leopard and elephant.

Ngorongoro Conservation Area

Serengeti Savannah Tented Camp Serengeti Savannah Camps are small, intimate luxury mobile camps, located in the Serengeti and northern Ngorongoro Conservation area. The fully equipped camps are shifted inside the Serengeti and northern Ngorongoro, - it is set up at central Serengeti and northern Seronera from June to November, then in the Ndutu area at northern Ngorongoro from December to March. Their location are ideally to be close to the famous migration of the Serengeti! The 11 walk-in tents are designed for traditional safari comfort– large tents with ensuite bathrooms, double or twin beds, warm bucket showers and eco-friendly toilets. Friendly, efficient service, great food, fresh bread, cold drinks, and the legendary, but traditional, Tanzanian warm welcome add to the discerning traveller’s experience.

Mara Sayari Tented Camp Sayari Camp opened in June 2005 on the south bank of the famous Mara River in the northern Serengeti. This area has been almost untouched by tourists and even now, Sayari Camp is still the only permanent camp in the remote north-western Serengeti. The reason why there are no lodges and camps in this area is because of its remoteness. Far away from the park headquarters in the central Serengeti, the land was subject to poaching in the 1990’s. However, an anti-poaching campaign has since ensured the land belongs to nature and its wildlife. Sayari Camp plays an important role in the long-term conservation of the area: people from villages bordering the Serengeti are employed in the camp and income from the camp goes towards educating and providing jobs for the villagers, thereby providing an alternative livelihood to poaching.

Mapito Tented Camp Serengeti The camp is located at Ikoma, just beyond the actual boundaries of the Serengeti National Park , sitting snugly in a clearing surrounded by Acacia trees. Here you can find probably one of the best game drives in the area, being close to the Grumeti River. Witness the amazing annual Wildebeest and Zebra Migration between May and August, and November-December, which passes the camp every year! Its location makes all parts of the Serengeti accessible in between short time. And due to its location just outside the park, walking Safaris, night game drives and cultural experiences are other highlights that are organised by the camp.

Nearly three million years ago Ngorongoro towered alongside Mount Kilimanjaro as one of the highest peaks in Africa. Forged during the tumultuous birth of the Rift Valley, its volcanic top erupted at the time that ancient man first walked the plains. The Ngorongoro Conservation Area (NCA) covers some 8,300 square kilometers. It boasts the finest blend of landscapes, wildlife, people and archaeological sites in Africa.

Ngorongoro Wildlife Today, Ngorongoro’s caldera shelters the most beautiful wildlife haven on earth. The rich pasture and permanent water of the Crater floor supports a resident population of some 20,000 to 25,000 large mammals. They are not confined by the Crater walls, and can leave freely; they stay because conditions are favorable. Since most of the Crater floor is grassland, grazing animals predominate: gnu, zebra, gazelles, buffalo, eland and kongoni (Coke’s hartebeest) and warthogs. The swamp and forest provide additional resources for hippos, some of Tanzania’s last remaining black rhinos, giant-tusked elephants, waterbucks, reedbucks and bushbucks, baboons and vervets. The steep inner slopes provide a habitat for dikdiks and the rare mountain reedbuck. All these animals in turn support large predators such as Lion and Leopard, and scavengers such as Hyena and Jackals. Note: only half day game drives are allowed in the crater.

Bird life What you can see of bird life depends greatly on the season of the year, because there are resident birds and migrant birds. You are certain to see many residents, like ostriches, bustards and plovers all year round. In wet season they share the Crater with European migrants such as White Storks, Yellow Wagtails, swallows, etc. The migrants pass through from November through May, coinciding with the rains in Africa and the winter in Eurasia. There are also local migrants such as flamingos, storks and ducks which come and go depending on the state of the lake and ponds. Other birds you can see are Stonechat, Anteater Chat, Schalow’s Wheatear, Fiscal Shrike. Augur Buzzards, Verreaux’s Eagle and other raptors live in the Crater.

Ngorongoro Sopa Lodge The Ngorongoro Sopa Lodge is poised on the brink of adventure. From its prime position on the eastern rim of the famous Ngorongoro crater, Ngorongoro Sopa Lodge offers today’s safari participant sophisticated comfort that Stanley, Livingstone, Speke and all others could only have dreamt of. The lodge boasts more than 100 rooms all equipped with two queen-sized beds, carpets, fully tiled bathroom with bidets and hair dryers, and private lounge with mini bar. The park is situated between the 600 m high escarpment of the Great Rift Valley and Lake Manyara and is 130 km from Arusha. Lake Manyara can be visited on a day excursion from Arusha. At the southern end of the park are hot sulphur springs known as Majimoto. Further along the forest the area opens up into woodlands, grassland and swamps. Beyond lies the soda lake itself.

Wildlife Nestling at the base of the Great Rift Valley escarpment, the park is recognized for its incredible beauty. Wildlife at Lake Manyara is not restricted to bird life alone. Many game animals such as buffalo, elephant, giraffe, impala, hippo and a great variety of smaller animals also inhabit the park. Lake Manyara is also renown for its tree-climbing lions, which spend most of the day spread out along the branches of acacia trees, six to seven metres above the ground. The park contains the most pachyderms (four legged animals) per square kilometer in Tanzania. As visitors enter the gate, they pass into the lush forest, home to troops of baboons and blue monkeys. Buffalo and hippo lurch in the adjacent hippo pool.

Manyara Serena Lodge It is difficult to imagine a more spectacular setting for this lodge - on the edge of the Mto Wa Mbu escarpment, overlooking the Great Rift Valley and the stunning Manyara soda lake. The extraordinary bird life has made this place worldrenowned among ornithologists, who come to observe the masses of pink flamingos and great birds of prey. The abundant bird life inspired the design of the Lodge - swooping curves are complemented by soft, geometric patterns; striking murals depict bird migration patterns. The circular shape of the buildings is a tribute to indigenous architectural traditions in Tanzania. Beyond the superb standards of hospitality offered, there is a spirit of tranquility that prevails. The lodge is comprised of 67 luxury rooms.

Tarangire National Park It is the vast number of baobabs that first capture the eye as you enter Tarangire National Park. The gently rolling countryside is dotted with these majestic trees, which seem to dwarf the animals that feed beneath them. The park owes its name to Tarangire River, which flows across the area. It is characterized by dense vegetation of acacia and mixed woodland, the area around Tarangire River however, is dominated by huge baobab trees and old doum palm trees to a lesser prominence, as well as black cotton grass. Though it is not as famous as other parks in the north, Tarangire offers the same attractions as other parks in the north. Its unique aspect is the annual animal immigration that takes place during the dry season.

Animal Migration While Serengeti’s animal migration has attained mundane fame, for many tourists, little is known of Tarangire annual migration. The difference with Serengeti however is that, in Serengeti animals migrate away from the park during the dry season (June to October), the opposite happens in Tarangire; animals migrate from Maasai Steppe to the park during the dry season. They migrate to the park in search for water, which is provided by Tarangire River, and predators migrate along in search for preys. During this period the park has the largest concentration of animals than in any park in the northern Tanzania.

When to Visit June to October is the best time to see large number of wildebeest, elephants, zebras, and hartebeest. Not all animals are migratory though, other animals such as giraffes, Impala, Eland, lesser kudu, waterbuck, gazelle and sometimes rhinos or leopards can be seen throughout the year. More people are attracted by the giant pythons and large herds of elephants. The park is also famous for migrant birds.

Tarangire Treetops Tarangire Treetops is a luxury safari lodge located on the eastern border of Tarangire National Park in Tanzania. It is famous for its renowned tree house architecture. Most people travel around these Northern Parks of Tanzania by Landrover and Tarangire Treetops is a wonderful place to stay either at the beginning or at the end of such a trip. Being just two hours out from Arusha, Treetops also makes an great stand-alone safari destination for residents of Arusha coming out for weekends in the bush. As well as the accommodation, Treetops also tries to offer a serious game-viewing experience, with guided walking safaris and game-drives in the camp’s own open-sided safari vehicles. The camp is also becoming increasingly well known for its night safaris, designed to catch the animals at their most active.

Mikumi National Park

The Ruaha National Park This relatively small (3230 sq km) National Park lies 300 km west of Dar-es-Salaam and is the closest park to the capital. It is nestled between the Uruguru mountains to the East and the Rift Valley escarpments to the Southwest. As it is close to the Selous ecosystem and therefor part of it, it benefits from the highest game density of the entire conservation area, while it is easily to access. Although less spectacular regarding Flora and Fauna, the Mikumi national park obtains a good impression of the African animal world and is suitable very well for a short visit. There is a rich variety bird species as well as large numbers of giraffes, buffaloes and elephants and close to the water holes also lions, leopards and hippos. Furthermore you can see zebras, lions, wild dogs, pythons, hartebeest, wildebeest, elephants, impala, warthog, eland and antelope. Several observation towers enable you to overview the park in its entirety. Mikumi National Park is mostly miombo woodland with gently rolling hills.

Vuma Hill Tented Camp Vuma Hills Tented Camp, is an easily accessible and attractive camp set in a peaceful location on a rise about 15 minutes from the entrance to Mikumi National Park. “Vuma” translates from Kiswahili to mean “good gossip spread on the blowing wind;” this camp has the right ambiance and peace for you to listen to hear the gossip. The 16 luxury tents all have a double and single bed, good bathroom, private veranda and each is tastefully decorated in colonial style. The public areas are set around the small swimming pool and with views over the Mkata River flood plains. The lodges is managed by the Fox family and with their Africa experience they have made this a relaxed, unpretentious camp with a cosy feel.

It offers a fascinating variety of landscapes and an untouched nature. Ruaha, at 12,950km., is only little smaller than the Serengeti, and it is without doubt a naturalist’s paradise. Due to its situation off the touristic routes and the meagerly sown accommodations this park is rarely visited. Ruaha is bordered in the north by the Kizigio and Rungwa River Game Reserves, together they form a 26,500km_ conservancy, one of the biggest in East Africa. It is truly a vast unspoilt wilderness. It is also interesting as it represents a transition zone where eastern and southern African species of flora and fauna overlap. Ruaha is visually a treat, with wild landscapes of miombo forest and rolling woodlands, hills, rivers and plains. Highest point is the peak of Ikungu Mountain with 1,900m. The center of the reserve is the Great Ruaha River, with its deep pools and gorges, swirling rapids and excellent fishing. The River features large numbers of hippos and crocodiles and attracts lions, leopards, hunting dogs, spotted hyenas, jackals and numerous other species such as Waterbuck impala, giraffe, warthog and eland. Grants gazelle, ostrich and cheetah may be seen on the plains.

Best time to visit

Mwagusi is an intimate lodge with only 8 tented rooms each with a superb view over the sand river, this sand river never fully dries up ensuring a large variety of game visiting year round. The rooms are made from local, natural materials and furnishings and decorations enhance the feeling of real safari style.

Ruaha River Lodge The oldest lodge in Ruaha National Park is run by Peter and Sarah Fox whose family have been visiting the area for the last 40 years. The lodge is set on the mighty Great Ruaha River and has probably the best location of all lodges in the park. The scenery is stunning, the rapids over which the lodge looks always have game drinking and the nearby pools are filled with crocodiles and hippos. The river bank is surrounded by rocky outcrops and it is on and around these that the lodge is built. The lodge is split in to two distinct camps; each with their own facilities and dining areas; there is new camp (ten bandas) and the old, original camp (eight bungalows), and although this seems large, each individual camp feels small and personal. The bandas are large and made of stone and thatch all with a good veranda and plenty of comfy seats. The rooms are a good standard with flush toilets, hot water and electricity. Meals are served on the river bank or high on a rocky outcrop, the food is wholesome and plentiful with fresh veg provided by the family farm in Iringa.

The best time to visit is between July and November when the animals congregate around the water holes, but the park is stunning all year round. Their cover is blown during the dry season (May to December), when the foliage dies down and animals become easier to see. Twice a year in March/April and October/November, Eurasian migrating birds arrive to boost the already high numbers of exotic and colorful species in this park.

Mwaguzi Tented Camp Mwagusi is an exclusive and highly regarded luxury tented camp in Ruaha National Park, Tanzania. Situated on the banks of the Mwagusi Sand River this is one of the most scenically beautiful areas of the park and has some of the greatest wildlife concentrations and diversity. This lodge was set up by a naturalist who loved being in the bush and spent his childhood holidays on camping trips in the area before the park was created. Over the last 16 years with his teaching the guiding at the lodge has become some of the best in East Africa. Safari options include either driving in open-sided 4x4s or the camps speciality- walking safaris often including interactions with an elephant that has come to know and respect the staff.

Katavi National Park

Mahale Mountains National Park

Remote and rarely visited, the Katavi National Park is a pearl among the national parks in Tanzania. Tanzania third biggest national park lies in the remote southwest of the country, close to Lake Tanganyika, in a remote Rift Valley arm, which ends in the shallow, dark expansion of the Rukwa lake. It has a higher density of mammals than any other Tanzanian National Park. Rivers groan with hippopotamus and crocodiles, and scattered over the plains are great herds of buffaloes, with up to 1000 animals in one group. The largest part of Katavi is covered Miombo Forest, which offers protection to large, but shy groups of Eland, black horse and Sable antelopes. The actual point of attraction for animal observers is however the Katuma river with its washing levels, to which the seasonal lakes Katavi and Chada belong. During the rain time these sumptuous, swampy lakes attracts innumerable water birds, and they nourish of Tanzania highest accumulations of hippos and crocodiles. Katavi is most impressive during dry season, when the lakes and rivers are almost dry. Many animals, including 4000 elephants, then concentrate at the few water holes. But Katavis most spectacular animal experience are the hippos. Toward the end of the dry season you might see up to 200 hippos into a deep river pool, rivalry between the male animals. The park head office in Sitalike is 40 km south of Mpanda. Charter flights are offered from Dar es Salaam or Arusha. During dry season the park can also be reached on road, from Mbeya (550 km) and Kigoma (390 km). Best travel time is during drying season: May to October and December until February.

Mahale Mountains National Park is located in one of the most remote locations in Tanzania, on the western border with the Congo, against the dramatic shores of Lake Tanganyika. Accessible only by small aircraft, the park is the home of a large chimpanzee population that is well acclimatized to human contact. Although the nearby Gombe Stream National Park is more famous, the primate population in Mahale Mountains is more numerous and sightings more regular and prolonged. Observing the chimpanzees in their natural habitat, one cannot help but be touched by their natural grace and anthropomorphic features. Although remote, a chimpanzee safari to Mahale Mountains National Park is well worth the effort. Hikes to their habitation areas are accessible and not strenuous, although being in good physical condition will ease the strain of walking through the jungle! Up close, observing the endangered primates is a once-ina-lifetime experience.

Greystoke Mahale Lodge On a wide beach along the eastern shores of Lake Tanganyika, sheltered by the dense forests of the Mahale Mountains in western Tanzania, lies the Greystoke Mahale camp. Your home at Greystoke Mahale is in wildly exotic wooden bandas looking out across the beach, with interiors fashioned from seasoned dhow timber. The six-suites are open-fronted, with adjoining bathrooms and upstairs chill-out decks, designed for the most demanding castaway. Activities including chimpanzee tracking, dug-out canoeing, fishing, walks in the park, boating, snorkeling and dhow trips Travel by air using Tanganyika Flying Company’s shared charters, which operate on Mondays and Thursdays, or by private charter.

MAFIA ISLAND

Mafia Island

Pemba Island Pemba, the sister island of Zanzibar, is an authentic island, rising sheer from immense depth and topped with a hilly and exceptionally fertile landscape, from which it derives its ancient name - Al Khudra - the Green Island. Pemba island is 30 miles north of Zanzibar and is famous for it’s spices and coconuts. Isolated from Arab and then European colonization, it has remained completely untouched and unspoiled by any modern development. The few visitors that do go to Pemba go there for it’s diving and snorkeling. It is said to have one of the best diving sites in East Africa!

Fundu Lagoon Fundu Lagoon is on Pemba Island, the sister island to Zanzibar, which lies across the Pemba Channel to the north. The hotel is situated on a remote and beautiful beach on the southwestern side of the island and is only accessible by boat. There are sixteen bungalows, consisting of spacious tents set under ‘makuti’ (thatch) roofs on wooden decks, each with a view over the ocean. Each has an en suite bathroom with fresh hot water shower, toilet and basin. The resort offers two bars, a games and television room, an excellent restaurant serving local and international cuisine, and a massage and treatment room. Listed as one of the top diving locations in the world, the resort also caters for the more energetic holiday maker with a fully equipped PADI Resort Diving Centre and a range of watersports including snorkeling and kayaking.

Mafia Island is located 20km from the Tanzanian mainland, South East of Dar es Salaam. It forms part, together with Unguja and Pemba, of the Zanzibar archipelago. It is 45km long and 17 km wide at its widest point. The only means of getting to Mafia is by private aircraft. While Zanzibar has become a popular tourist resort, Mafia Island remains virtually unknown. Previously poor communications with the mainland and being much lesser known than Zanzibar have kept Mafia ‘original’, although a steady trickle of visitors are unanimous in singing its praise. The Mafia Archipelago is scattered over the Indian Ocean 21 km off the Rufiji River Delta in central Tanzania. Almost half the coastline of Mafia, some 822km, has been gazetted a marine park by the Government. To date over 50 genera of corals, more than 460 species of fish and five different species of turtles have been recorded in the waters around Chole Bay. The climate on all those islands is typically tropical, making for hot and dry weather most of the year. During the rainy season from March to May it becomes more humid.

Ras Mbisi Lodge Ras Mbisi Lodge is one of few luxurious and exclusive lodges on Mafia Island. Located on the western coast of the island, the lodge lies on an idyllic white sandy beach, which stretches for an uninterrupted 8km around the lodge and provides the perfect setting for a relaxing break from the hassle of modern day life. On any of the islands, a beach like this is rare - unspoilt by any other development and protected by the bay, the calm waters are crystal clear and wonderful for swimming in. Ras Mbisi also has a swimming pool for those who simply can’t be bothered to stagger the three meters to the sea, and the friendly and attentive staff will watch and bring you ice cold drinks before you even knew you were thirsty! Ras Mbisi Lodge boasts nine spacious and beautifully designed bungalows, each with a private balcony from which to enjoy the spectacular sunsets and sunrises and a private en-suite bathroom. The lodge prides itself on its sustainable, eco-friendly approach, and all bungalows are constructed by local Mafia Island craftsmen from locally sourced coco-wood.
