AARGAU SWITZERLAND

July 10 – 12, 2015

ven 600 years ago, great sporting feats were already being achieved. Under the slogan «1415 – Die Eidgenossen kommen», in 2015 the canton of Aargau is commemorating the conquest of its future area by the Swiss Confederates, who at that time set out on foot from Bern, Lucerne and Zurich against the Duke of Habsburg, at the request of the German King. The fitness of the Swiss lansquenets must have been astonishing, since they had to cope with daily marches of 50 kilometres or

more between the various cities, castles and bailiwicks that had to be conquered during the four-week-long conflict. Under the motto «Discover History», from July 10 – 12, 2015, Gigathletes are invited to swim, roll and run from the central location of Aarau to all areas of the canton to discover historic palaces, castles, towns, amphitheatres, monasteries, places of worship, legionnaire paths and ancient water courses and experience many sporting highs during a two-day sport-based voyage of discovery.

he mountain bikers launch the voyage of discovery through Aargau. Sights will be trained on the highest point in the canton at 908 metres above sea level. Another panoramic view is the reward for the full-on ascent. A lot of elevation gain over a short distance sets the benchmark for the challenges to come. When entering the Aare, the Gigathletes will immediately sense the power of the water. Correct navigation at bridges and by Biberstein and Auenstein castles will affect swimming times, as will the 300 or so metres on foot at Auenstein power station. The castles of Wildegg, Wildenstein, Habsburg and Brunegg line up as if in a film along the inline section of the route, bearing witness to history. The inline athletes will glide back to Wildegg at a fast pace, to be welcomed to

great applause on the ascent to the castle. Through the castle garden, the runners make their hilly way through the history beneath their feet, storming Brunegg castle and the ancestral seat of the Habsburgs. They now have four disciplines but only half of the distance in kilometres behind them. The amphitheatre of Vindonissa provides the backdrop for the last role change of the day. Königsfelden monastery provides the mental strength required to conquer the following «legionnaire path». Klingnau reservoir, Böttstein castle and the Rhine lie along the route, while the historic town of Laufenburg is crossed at the centre of the course. Athletes head up «Chriesiweg» in the direction of Bänkerjoch, before descending at high speed back into Aarau, through the old town and to the finish in Schachen.

arly in the morning, the road bikes are out once again. It is not only the heights of the Jura Mountains but also the ice-age moraine landscape that will get the legs. At Hallwyl castle, the road bike section is interrupted by a swim in Hallwilersee lake and in the castle moat. The history-steeped road bike route leads to Muri monastery, with its 1,000-year connection with the Habsburg dynasty. The cobblestone-paved towns of Bremgarten and Mellingen are traversed. Using ancient bridges, the athletes also cross the Reuss and the Aare before making it back to Aarau. The inline athletes leave the canton of Aargau briefly and for once encounter not the conflicts of the past but the religious wars of the energy gods. Grand barrages and steaming cooling towers are symbolic of the struggle for natural

resources and sustainability. The mountain bike stretch demonstrates how sport, tourism and history combine in the Gigathlon. Prehistoric sites, a mountain bike park, Liebegg castle and Trostburg castle, the chapel on Staufberg and, towering above everything, Lenzburg castle. This real gem is, however, bypassed and left for the runners to enjoy. They run through the impressive castle grounds via bridges and battlements, courtyards and gates. When leaving Lenzburg, they meet up with supporters and mountain bikers, making their way together to the centre of the canton. There is enough time to enjoy Auenstein and Biberstein castles and the river landscape, to look back on images, experiences, crises and highlights, and to complete a new chapter in a personal story by crossing the finish line.
