MESSAGE FROM MIKE KOEN The Communications Director

As this year is drawing to a close I have to admit that golf has become far more than just a game for me. I enjoy the camaraderie of the guys I play with but at times I am consumed by the challenge of golf itself. I try to play better and become frustrated when things don't go well. I have mastered the art of not throwing my club when I feel like doing so and over the course of this year I am doing a much better job of keeping my emotions in check independent of the outcome of any shot or any round. During this year it was the best of times it was the worst of times. That famous line was

taken from The Tale of Two Cities written by Charles Dickens in the 1860s. I rather doubt that Charles Dickens played golf, as during those times golf was played by Scottish and English noblemen. This came to mind however based upon my experience of playing golf this year. I have been taking golf lessons for a while and that has resulted in better play on my part, at times. My score gradually decreased and from the beginning of the year until mid year my typical score declined from the mid nineties to the mid eighties culminating with my best round of 82, last May, which included a hole in one. 2

These were the best of times.

realizing that a terrible round of golf is not the same as having a heart attack. So during this next year here's a few thoughts to ponder.

My wife and I, during the hot months, go to San Diego for a few weeks to escape the heat. I was really eager to show off my improved golfing skills and couldn't wait to hear my wife say "wow you really have improved". Didn't happen, persistent muscle memory crept into my game and while I was in California I stunk, playing no better then I had played in previous years. I have been taking lessons for a year or so and I mentally reviewed everything that I thought I learned but things got kind of erratic and after I got home I shot a 109,

Heard on the practice range; So if it's only a freakin game why does it bother me so much? I was hitting them great on the driving range but not on the course. I look forward to sharing insights with you, particularly after hooking your ball out of bounds or just after missing a two foot putt. I wish everyone the best in the New Year. Remember to keep your head down, your eye on the ball and hit it long and straight or at least straight and if that doesn't work I hope you find your ball.

The worst of times. Needless to say I didn't feel very good, actually I felt rather embarrassed as that day I was playing in a team event and didn't make much of a contribution. After a few days, I was able to put things in perspective

Have a great year in 2016

Mike

ANNUAL GOLF LUNCHEON Steph  Groth  Presenting  a  plaque  of   appreciation  to  Jack  Gressingh,  the  outgoing   President  of  the  Saddlebrooke  Men’s  Golf   Association   The SaddleBrooke Ranch Men's Golf Association has over the last four years been very generous to the SaddleBrooke Community Outreach's (SBCO) Scholarship efforts donating proceeds from the spring couples golf Event. Members worked hard soliciting sponsorships, attending the event dinner, donating and supporting raffle prizes and donating money. We have received over $12,000 including last years record $6600. SBCO now has 40 scholarship recipients of $1500 a year for 4 years, somewhat unusual since many local scholarships are only for one year. Scholarships are granted to local students graduating from high schools in San Manuel, Hayden-Winkleman, Kearney and Superior. In

addition, students living in Oracle who may attend Canyon del Oro or Ironwood Ridge High schools are also eligible. SBCO's Education committee reviews scholarship applications from students at these schools and selects recipients based on financial need, academic grades, recommendations, their academic and career plans and an in person interview. These are generally not wealthy towns or wealthy families so these scholarships though not large can sometimes be the difference between attending college and not going. In 2015 we selected 15 students from 22 applicants and hope to do so in succeeding years. We, and the students are very thankful for the efforts of SBRMGA.

GOLF TIPS FROM PHIL MICKELSON I recently discovered a great video tip from none other than Phil Mickelson on how to hit a flop shot. Additionally there are many other videos associated with this link: Check it out I think you will enjoy these tips. Mike http://youtu.be/C5ophbTUY7s

GOLF HUMOR A golfer hits a wicked slice off the tee that ricocheted through the trees and onto the next fairway narrowly missing another golfer. When he got to his ball, he was greeted by the unintentional target, who angrily told him of the near miss. "I'm very sorry" the errant golfer said, "I didn't have time to holler fore." "That's funny" the man replied, " you had plenty of time to holler SHIT." "I'm about five inches from being an outstanding golfer. That's the distance my left ear is from the right."-Ben Crenshaw

GOLF COURSE IMPROVEMENT If you’re on the course you may see some white paint spots around some of the tee boxes, 1st green and in a couple fairways. Our golf course improvement committee has been working on locations for additional trees. 19 locations are under consideration. They’re not expecting a tree in every location right away. They do expect to get about 12 – 14 trees in the near term though, and they’re in ready to start planting. So...in case you’re out there and are interested here’s the list of what we’re looking at: #1 Right side of cart path by the green – shade parkers and deflect range balls #2 None #3 None #4 Rust tees 15 yards left side either side of cart path #5 None #6 Rust tee – back left #7 Plum / Rust tees 15 yards left (north) across cart path #8 Back of Green Tees 15 yards from cart path, Plum tees 15 yards back of tees-12 feet from cart path #10 Rust tees, 10 feet left of cart path #11 Green tees-between ball washer and green tee across cart path Rust tees-Behind tees across cart path #12 Plum tees behind #13 Move tree from cart path on right to fairway to help direct play #14 Green tees-right rear corner edge #15 Between Black and Green tees left side 10 foot from cart path Plum tees left side 10 feet from cart path #16 Rear of Rust tees, 6 foot from cart path Rear of Plum tees, 6 foot from cart path #17 Behind pine #18 Plum tees on right side of cart path – force play into fairway
