Leon Jakimic founded Lasvit with a single vision – to create the perfect experience through the quality of light, glass, and design. The list of Lasvit´s art pieces includes hand-blown objects in private residences, public spaces and luxurious hotels as well as in high-end boutiques and extraordinary interiors. Lasvit is currently developing and producing a wide range of uniquely shaped glass panels for the architecture industry.

Our Roots

The Lasvit Group, founded in 2007 and based in the Czech Republic, is a leading designer and manufacturer of custom contemporary light fittings, feature architectural glass installations and lighting collections. A STORY OF BOHEMIAN PERFECTION As a young boy I particularly remember watching my great uncle cutter Werner Sraml cutting crystal in the village of Desna in North Bohemia. My parents followed the family tradition by working in the Czech glass export business and so do I in my own way.

Lasvit projects span the globe from London, Paris and Prague, to international cities including Moscow, Los Angeles, Hong Kong and Singapore. Projects vary from glass sculptures for private residences, to large-scale installations for luxury boutiques and hotels. The company has 10 international offices in Europe, Asia, the Middle East, North and South America.

Today, following the creation of Lasvit in 2007, we are working in four continents where our award winning design lighting and bespoke glass installations enhance some of the world’s most impressive environments. I am delighted to celebrate our journey so far and showcase some of our finest designs in Lasvit: A Story of Bohemian Perfection.

We are all both Bohemian and Perfectionists at heart and long may it continue. Leon Jakimič Founder & Managing Director

Oculus weighs an impressive 12 tons in all, consisting of more than 250,000 crystal components and 12,800 artistic hand-blown glass components as well as 160 rods.

Oculus goes far beyond normal glass art and lighting installations. The Oculus‘ final diameter is 16 meters and installation of the design required 12 weeks.

THE DUBAI METRO Two major metro stations in Dubai, Khalid Bin Al Waleed Station and Al Rigga Station, have accented their modern look with impressive decorative light fixtures designed by Lasvit. Busy servicing tourists, businesspeople, politicians, shoppers, and others, The Dubai Metro stations are seen and visited by countless people on a daily basis. Recent renovations have brought light and modern luxury to The Dubai Metro.

Khalid Bin Al Waleed Station / Located beneath the Burjuman Mall, the Khalid Bin Al Waleed Station, familiarly known as Burjuman metro stop, provides service for the busy areas of the mall, Bank Street, and a number of diplomatic missions. This station is anything but dark and commonplace. It boasts brilliant lighting and gorgeous one-of-a-kind glass artwork, Water, handcrafted by Jitka Kamencová Skuhravá and drawing inspiration from the energy of a water spring.

Water by Jitka Kamencová Skuhravá / The beautiful Water lighting sculpture, designed by Jitka Kamencová Skuhravá, graces the ceilings of the Khalid Bin Al Waleed Station. Two parts make up Water, which has come to be coined the “a giant jellyfish” by the public. The base features textured bent glass that connects to the second part – a stylized waterfall phased into hand-blown, hollow glass drops. A stainless steel finish completes the design, which uses LEDs and RGB-based optical fibre with a 150W projector to cast its beautiful glow.

The Ritz-Carlton Hong Kong offers guests lavish accommodation with a breathtaking skyline view. This luxurious hotel in Kowloon occupies the top 16 floors of the 118-story tower. The property includes a magnificent ballroom, a lavish spa and unique dining venues. Lasvit’s glass and crystal designs enhance the hotel’s luxury thanks to Lasvit’s designers Katarína Kudějová Fulínová and Táňa Dvořáková, who created Diamond Sea I, Breeze, Diamond Sea II, Twill, Flames, and Smoke.

Diamond Sea by Katarína Kudějová Fulínová / Lasvit’s Diamond Sea captures the influence of the ocean’s power and size. The commanding waves thrash forth from the seemingly infinite sea of sparkling water. Diamond Sea features hand-blown glass in dazzling clear and light amber colors, twisting and curving in serpentine fashions. Flanked by panels of mirrors, the Diamond Sea lighting fixture projects elegance throughout the ballroom through the atmospheric interplay between illumination and reflection it creates.

Bellavita Store, the stunning light sculpture, Icefalls in Tiffany Teal by Jitka Kamencová Skuhravá, reflects the iconic sparkle of Tiffany’s jewellery. Combining hundreds of delicate hand-blown icicles to form a sculptural piece of art, this stunning light sculpture boasts many hand-blown stalactites to create the Lasvit original design. Its ellipsoid shape depicts a conglomeration of melting ice, centered above a display of beautiful Tiffany jewels.

London’s Sake no Hana Restaurant provides a peaceful setting with classy décor and exquisite Japanese cuisine. Located in the centre of London, Sake no Hana is in close proximity to the shopping district as well as the Ritz Hotel and other attractions. Like the ideal icing on a remarkable interior design, Lasvit’s Bamboo Forest glass art lighting sculpture brightens the restaurant´s bar as well as the mood.

Bamboo Forest by Jitka Kamencová Skuhravá / This vibrant green glass art installation, the Bamboo Forest, resembles tubular bamboo shoots growing downward in varying lengths. Each individual bamboo shoot has its own shape and style, offering natural curves in a beautiful, organic green hue. The Bamboo Forest enhances the bar’s atmosphere with the illusion of a bamboo wall. When viewed together as a single entity, the bamboo stems create the impression of an almost real forest.

HOTEL ÉCLAT BEIJING One of the city’s most elegant hotels is the striking Hotel Éclat. Forming part of the Parkview Green development in the Chaoyang district, the architectural masterpiece is a gleaming pyramid enveloping four steel and glass towers connected by a dramatic 236 metre long bridge. Hotel Éclat sits at the apex of the structure. The hotel also houses an astounding art collection that includes pieces by Salvador Dali, Andy Warhol and Zeng Fangzhi.

Magical Abyss / Lasvit has created its own masterpiece for the hotel lobby. Jitka Kamencová Skuhravá‘s dynamic ceiling installation reflects the flow of energy in the space through its handblown glass components. The blue elements of the sculpture represent moving water in the form of waves and whirlpools whilst the few red elements determine the direction of flow. Together, they emit calming bluepurple hues intensified by the stainless steel mirror plates above.

In an effort to honor the past and rejoice in the future, Lasvit furnished a oneof-a-kind glass art lighting fixture for the Capital Gate Lobby.

Wave / The Wave installation reminds its observers of a long ocean wave which twines around the eclipse shape of the lighting. It is over 17 meters long, almost 5 meters wide, 9 meters high and composed of more than 6,200 components. The eclipse is designed in three layers, embellished with hand-blown and hand-shaped pieces installed vertically. Most of them are made of clear glass and decorated with relief lines.

GROWING VASES / BY NENDO

Lasvit Story

Collections

38 / 39

Extraordinary, playful, fresh, never seen before, impractical, illogical are words that can be used to describe Growing Vases yet they still don‘t capture its essence. There are no words to express the whimsical nature of this lighting installation. Nendo and Lasvit collaborated to create an art piece which conveys the quixotic appeal of glass as something impractical and incomplete, yet provides a breath of fresh air and opens up new possibilities. Created with Czech Bohemian glass, this lighting installation alludes to a whimsical glass forest filled with abstract flowers and branches.

The principle of a flower and a vase here is turned upside down. By turning the pipes into flowers and branches and by blowing the glass into a vase, suddenly vases are blooming from flowers instead of flowers blooming in vases! Growing Vases breaks conventions and symbolizes the birth of life. “We decided to take the brief in a playful direction, and to suggest both breathing and the incomplete by displaying the metal pipes used by the glassblowers, still attached to the glass objects that they were used to make.“ – Oki Sato

PRESS LAMP / BY NENDO

Lasvit Story

Collections

40 / 41

The press design is available in two types: a pendant lamp and a floor lamp. In this design, glass tubes are pressed as though they have been pinched, and the light source is fitted into the narrowed space that results. Unusual in the fact that it does not rely on a metal form, the compression of the glass produces a soft, organic form and imbues each lamp with a singular appearance.

INHALE LAMP / BY NENDO This lamp was formed by blowing glass into the form of an air bubble then sucking the air out. Ordinarily, glass is made by blowing air into the molten material. The inhale lamp, on the other hand, comes from the act of exhaling. It‘s a form created by negative air pressure.

BUBBLES IN SPACE / BY JITKA KAMENCOVÁ SKUHRAVÁ

Lasvit Story

Collections

42 / 43

The perfect shape and aesthetics of Bubbles in Space should be assigned to the thousandyear-old tradition of Czech glassmaking, that has maintained its rare position in the world of glassmaking since the Gothic period. Fine matured Bubbles popped up from the art of the Czech glassmaking designers and glasswork masters, always fresh with a versatile reflexive tone, smart, space friendly and always of an outstanding aesthetic class. The object can fulfil the function of lighting fixture as well as having the power to fill

the room with its specific atmosphere. Its remarkable concept makes it impossible for the viewer to perceive it only in a practical sense. Multiplicity, spatial make-up, abstract form and a light installation ensure this emotional lighting whirl stirs with emotion. The sphere, the bubble, in other words, that which stands for the determining shape of the object, is also the natural constituent of the glass material and an obvious part of the matter. Its surface reflects the world around and transforms the image of it due

to its ability to cast optical spells prompting the viewer’s imagination into the plays of light, shape and motion. The popularity of Champagne steadily grew, among other reasons, because the bubbles in the wine somehow speed up the flow of alcohol into the blood. Bubbles in Space by Lasvit is the Champagne among all spatial lightings, the fizz that really gets you drunk with stirring emotion flowing freely in your mind.

UOVO / BY RONY PLESL These reflective art glass lighting sculptures shine like a mountain of precious rounded mirrors, capturing nearby objects and multiplying them to infinity. Lasvit and Rony Plesl, expert product designer, artistically crafted Uovo d’argento and Uovo d’oro using glassblowing techniques to make each of the large version sculptures’ 124 eggs. Practically invisible wire suspends each sculpture’s many golden or silver eggs. Together, the mirrored surfaces of each design playfully interact

with each other and the nearby surroundings. Uovos exudes matchless charm and creativity due to the fact that it’s been designed in two pieces with an exceptional technique. One of the sculptures, Uovo d’argento, comprises silver eggs, handcrafted by silvering clear blownglass components from the inside. The matching piece, Uovo d’oro, features golden eggs, with the coloring achieved by silvering the insides of amber glass components. For the large version the finished designs

are nearly two meters high, 1.2 meters wide, and 130 kilograms in weight. There is also a smaller version of the Uovo designs available. Stainless steel hardware and LEDs complete this majestic duo. Lasvit and Rony Plesl presented their very first collaboration in October 2011 at Designblok, the most significant design event in Prague.

Glass for Architecture

46 / 47

Lasvit Liquidkristal (LLK), designed by Ross Lovegrove is a new product from Lasvit's Glass Architecture Division. Lasvit Liquidkristal is the result of an innovative process that the designer defines as “high precision heat transfer.” Lovegrove worked with Lasvit for more than a year to create the mobile, changing

surfaces, inspired by the fluid, organic forms found in nature. The company deployed its most advanced technology to produce the transparent, undulating crystal panels, which appear dynamic, changing, capable of transmuting their shapes in a futuristic kaleidoscope.

Lasvit Crystal Wall is an original building set of crystal components with a pre-defined variety of patterns having a highly aesthetic impact. It represents a new and uniquely versatile installation hovering on the border of applied and original art. Lasvit Crystal Wall offers new possibilities using a combination of luxury and functional interior design which was inspired by the tradition of glass application in similar Czechoslovak

architecture of the 1960’s and 1970’s. The Lasvit Crystal Wall components are fortified with either an internal highly polished steel and very strong rod structure or clad on to a supporting structure to create the same effect and can be used, for example, like a wall running through several floors of a lobby in an atrium hotel or to decoratively divide, but in the same way, unite two smaller interior spaces.

Our Intentions

OUR INTEN TIONS BUILDING ON TRADITION

Glass is like a master instrument. Only a true virtuoso is able to breathe life into it, transforming it into beauty. It is our intention, therefore, to combine the creativity and imagination of top designers with the precision and skills of experienced Czech master glassmakers. We are interested in designers with a novel approach to the process of designing and we are excited to transform their visions into unique objects and installations. Besides the collaboration with global design superstars we are pleased to give an opportunity to young designers and connect them with Czech master glassmakers. We are launching Czech glass to the world while protecting its identity and authenticity. Lasvit is proud to be a follower of the old traditions of

Bohemian glass which further develop with respect to history while looking straight to the future. We are excited that this year we are establishing collaboration with the glass master René Roubíček, who has significantly contributed to the appreciation of glass as a material for loose sculptural work. At the World Expo in Brussels in 1958, he won the Grand Prize for his abstract composition called Glass - Matter - Shape - Expression. His installation at the world exhibitions of Montreal Expo 1967 and Expo Osaka 1971 were also the biggest attractions of these shows and brought the designer world fame. We were therefore delighted to celebrate the ninetieth birthday of this master with his latest design created exclusively for Lasvit.

The collaboration with the phenomenal creator Bořek Šípek was also an important step forward. The renowned cosmopolitan architect sparked a massive wave of interest in Czech glass in the eighties, which has continued to today. Šípek´s objects and artifacts from that era, have become icons of postmodern design and highlighted the craftsmanship of the glassmakers isolated behind the "Iron Curtain" in Czechoslovakia. We feel obliged and similarly proud to work with these masters, who influenced the history of design worldwide. We are connected not only to the country we came from, but also to our philosophy. Lasvit Story

Our Intentions

56 / 57

Lasvit is a relatively young company, which, after just a few short years of existence, has already built up considerable respect. Not only is the enthusiasm of the owners and co-workers behind its success, but also their professionalism and creativity. Lasvit’s products are known around the world, but it has also earned renown in its home environment. This became evident to the full when the company won prestigious awards in the Czech Academy of Design’s Czech Grand Design 2011 in the Manufacturer of the Year and Designer of the Year categories. The firm’s success, however, is not based on shallow foundations; Lasvit operates in a place in North Bohemia which has been acclaimed for its glassmaking traditions for many centuries, to which the company consciously and systematically connects itself in many aspects. Not only does it use, but it also develops many of the production methods and technological concepts for glass so typical for the Nový Bor region. For an illustration of the historical development of local glassmaking, to which Lasvit advocates, here is a brief retrospective look. Near Nový Bor is the place where, until recently, the glassworks with the longest uninterrupted history in the world was operating. The first mention of the glassworks in Chřibská comes from 1414. Over the years glass from North Bohemia was gradually exported more and more. The most famous trader was Georg Franz Kreybich (1662–1736) from Kamenický Šenov, not far from Nový Bor. From the 1820s and 1830s traders supported sales for the so-called glassworks company and sales representation throughout the western world. North Bohemian glass spread in a similar way to that of Lasvit’s illuminations today. The production of chandeliers and crystal decorations was developed in the area of Česká Lípa in the 18th century. The enterprises of Count Kinský in Sloup in Bohemia and its surroundings should take a significant amount of credit for the development of mirror production in the region. The Nový Bor region was always a place where technological innovations occurred, personified the most by the experimenter and businessman Friedrich Egermann (1777–1864). The people around Lasvit also link the firm’s identity to the world’s oldest glassmaking school, which since 1856 has been based in Kamenický Šenov, a town with a long chandelier-making history, due to which it is often called the Town of Chandeliers or even the Town of Light. It is this institute’s teachers and graduates that have contributed to this to a significant degree.

Lasvit knows this well and therefore strives to preserve and support glassmaking education in North Bohemia. Products and installations from Nový Bor can be found in the bases of global art glass such as was presented, for example, at the EXPOs in Brussels in 1958, Montreal in 1967 and Osaka in 1970. Lasvit recently approached a legend of these and other presentations and creator of countless illuminated installations, René Roubíček. The first of the master’s designs for Lasvit are now coming out as the fruits of this collaboration. And so, throughout the history of glassmaking, in the context of Lasvit’s work, the journey would long continue and go even deeper. Without any real hesitation we can call Lasvit the advancer of the best of that rich history of Czech glass and crystal. Time will surely tell that this proclamation is not overstated, although much of that is already apparent now. Thanks to Lasvit and the hundreds of its completed lit glass installations to date, much more is once again spoken of the revival to fame of the best of, what in the eyes of many, symbolizes the Czech lands: the splendour of perfectly produced art glass. This inherently belongs to meeting the goals which the founders of Lasvit set at the outset of its existence. The fact that Lasvit purchased an interest in the well know Ajeto glassworks in Lindava proves that it has substantially taken on part of the responsibility for the tradition of glass production in our country, but above all, in the place where it operates, in the Nový Bor region. It works with the best masters of the glassmaking industry whose work has brought them the knowledge of finesse over many years, during which the shape of Czech glassmaking art was formed. It is immensely important to Lasvit to produce in the area where its glass geniuses have their hub. To transport its production to other countries certainly would not be technically difficult, to work elsewhere definitely cheaper, but Lasvit rejects this on principle. It belongs to North Bohemia and is proud of it. Furthermore, it intends to draw from and develop the fame of the local glassmaking production. Whether they are installations designed by Lasvit’s renowned designers and studios such as Ross Lovegrove, Fabio Novembre, Nendo, Michael Young, Arik Levy or Bořek Šípek and shine, for example, in palaces and hotels in the most exotic countries, it will always be all about Czech products, about Czech glass. Mgr. Milan Hlaveš, Ph.D. Head of the Glass and Ceramics Department Museum of Decorative Arts in Prague
