A Stocking Fore Golfers

Golfers will adore this stocking, especially when they discover it on Christmas morning filled with tees, balls, gloves, and en embroidered golf towel. Spell "Dad" or "Mom" with applique letters -- or stitch a monogram for a custom look!

Project Needs & Notes - 1/4 yard white felt - 1/4 yard black felt - 1/2 yard plaid cotton fabric - Small pieces of twill for applique letters - 3" x 3" piece of black faux leather - Medium-weight (2.5 ounce) cutaway stabilizer - Temporary spray adhesive (like Gunold KK100) - Air-erase pen for marking - Masking tape - Fabric glue For this tutorial, I used the 3" size of the Collegiate Applique Alphabet. White twill applique fabric made the letters stand out nicely from the plaid cotton. Choose designs that will fit into a 7" x 10" space for this stocking. Finished size: 18" from cuff to heel 12" from heel to toe 7" opening This project was featured in the following: 12 Days of Christmas Stockings Lookbook

To get started, print the pattern pieces by first downloading the PDF file. There are three pieces that will print on 8 1/2" x 11" pieces of paper.

Cut out each shape, then tape the two pattern pieces together to make the shoe shape.

Pin the shoe pattern to a piece of white felt, and cut out the shoe shape. Repeat so you have two pieces of shoe-shaped white felt.

Pin the overlay pattern to black felt, and cut out two pieces.

Place one of the white felt pieces with the toe facing to the left. This will be the back of the shoe. Place the other white felt piece with the toe facing to the right. This is the front of the shoe. Align the black overlay fabric in the center of the shoe pieces and pin in place.

Sew a 1/4" seam around the entire outer edge of the overlay pieces.

Align the assembled shoe pieces with the right sides together and pin in place.

Sew a 1/2" seam along the side and bottom edges, leaving the top edge open.

Cut slits, 1" apart, around the seam allowance. Be careful not to cut the seam. These cuts allow the sides of the shoe to be shaped properly when turned right side out.

Next, prepare the pant section of the stocking. Cut four pieces of the plaid cotton 9" x 14 1/2". Two of the pieces are for the outer shell, and two are for the lining. Take one of the pieces of plaid and measure and mark the center of each side. Usually an air-erase pen is used for marking, but in this case, the marks didn't show up well on the plaid fabric. Masking tape is used instead. Draw lines on the tape

connecting the center side marks. Where the lines meet is the exact center of the fabric.

Print the design from embroidery software to make a template. If you don't have software to make templates, use Wilcom's TrueSizer, a free program. In this example, the letters are placed down the fabric, with the centers of the designs on the center point of the vertical strip of masking tape. Your design placement will vary depending on the designs you're using.

Spray a piece of cutaway stabilizer and smooth the fabric on top.  Hoop the fabric and stabilizer together, and align the marks on the hoop with the marks for the first embroidery design.

Attach the hoop to the machine and move the hoop so the needle is right over the center point. Embroider the first design. Repeat for the other designs you're using on the stocking. There is no need to trim the stabilizer away from the back of the fabric. Leaving it in will add more stability to the stocking.

After embroidering the designs, place one of the plaid fabric pieces on top of the embroidered piece, right sides together. Pin in place and sew a 1/2" seam along each long side only, leaving the short ends open.

Turn the fabric right side out and press the seams with an iron.

To prepare the inner lining, align the two remaining cotton pieces together, right sides together. Pin in place and sew a 1/2" seam along the long sides only.

To prepare the loop, cut a piece of cotton 2" x 7" long.  Fold the long sides together to meet in the center of the fabric and press.

Fold the fabric again with the folded edges together and press.

Insert the embroidered outer shell piece inside of the inner lining. Align the top and bottom edges together.

Bring the ends of the loop together and insert it, loop side pointing down, between the layers along the right side seam.  Align the ends of the loop with the top edges of the shell and outer lining.  Pin the top edges of the shell and lining in place.

Sew a 1/2" seam around the entire top edge. This attaches the top edges and the loop.

Pull the lining all the way up over the shell.

Insert the lining inside of the shell.  Align the bottom edges together and press the seam. Top stitch a 1/4" seam around the entire top edge.

Next, attach the shoe to the pants. Turn the pant section inside out.  Lay the pant section with the bottom edge facing towards you and the embroidered side facing upwards (since the pant section is turned inside out the embroidery will face up from the inside).  Lay the shoe section with the toe facing to the right and the bottom facing up.

Fold the shoe with the toe touching the heel and insert the shoe inside the pant section. Align the top edges of the shoe with the bottom edges of the pant in the center of the pant.

Pin in place. Pinch the excess fabric on the sides of the pant section together and pin in place.

Sew a 1/2" seam starting from the outer edge of the bottom of the pant section up to the edge of the shoe. Do this on both sides.  Sew a 1/2" seam along the open edges of the bottom of the pants. This attaches the shoe to the bottom of the pants.

Turn the stocking right side out. Press the seams at the bottom of the pant section.

Next, prepare the fringed section of the shoe. Cut a piece of faux leather to 3" x 3". Using a dressmaker's pencil on the back, make 3/8" marks along two of the adjacent sides. Draw lines connecting the marks. Also, draw a line down the center parallel to the lines you just drew.

Cut along the lines up to the center line.

Make diagonal cuts on the end of each piece creating points.

Apply fabric glue to the unfringed backside of the piece and wrap it around the top edge of the shoe.
