“A Seminar and Workshop on Cultural Tourism Management in ASEAN” marking the auspicious occasion of H.R.H. Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn’s fifth cycle birthday anniversary.

Welcome Silpakorn University International Affairs Office cordially invites academics, researcher, and lecturers, and those who are interested to attend “A Seminar and Workshop on Cultural Tourism Management, marking the auspicious occasion of H.R.H. Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn’s fifth cycle birthday anniversary. The workshop aims to develop participants’ knowledge about cultural tourism, ethnic groups in ASEAN, and their cultural heritages. It is also expected to provide opportunities for the participants to learn and share professional practices, cultural tourism patterns, and their success as well as obstacles in managing cultural tourism and cultural heritages, which lead to sustainable tourism of ASEAN member countries. Rationale South East Asia region is generally considered one of the world’s popular destinations for tourists from different parts of the world. Tourism industry in this region is growing obviously, generating high GDP and GNP of the member countries. The industry has strengthened and driven the economy of the ASEAN member countries. A vital factor that attracts tourists from, for example, EU, America, and Middle East to travel the region is the abundance of resources possessed by the ASEAN member countries, such as natural resources, cultural heritages, and historical sites. These resources well represent the evolution of individual country’s identity and social, historical, ethnic and cultural diversity. Historical and archeological evidence reveals social and cultural development of people in the South East Asia region was influenced by Indian and Chinese. Geographically, ASEAN cultures can be classified into three main areal clusters: Mekong Delta, Malay, and Philippines. Geographical differences have crucial impacts on people’s way of life, beliefs, customs, traditions, arts, communication, cultural exchanges within societies and the adaptation of outsiders’ cultures. These have been passed onto generations to generations. Without a doubt, ASEAN cultures have become valuable tourism capital for the ASEAN member countries, and created a form of tourism i.e. cultural tourism. Taking into account the importance of cultural capital, many countries have employed it as an economic drive and to strengthen tourism industry and generate population’s income and GNP. For example, cultural events or festivals of individual countries are organized aiming to promote and attract a high volume of tourists to their countries.

While the cultural capital has been increasingly important to the region’s economy, destinations for tourists are being faced with negative impacts. Many historical sites are being deteriorated by visitors unintentionally. Responsible agencies, on the one hand, may be incapable to manage and maintain their attractions due to the lacks of managerial skills and knowledge for the maintenance or financial support. Tourists, on another, may not truly understand the local cultures, and do not know what to do or what to avoid when visiting the attractions. These, therefore, can lead to such deterioration. As we are now in the era of cooperation under the ASEAN Economic Community, it is the time for the ASEAN member countries to mutually review the policy concerning cultural tourism management. Some countries may have difficulties in managing and conserving their cultural heritage sites, whereas others may achieve their goals. Thus, the ASEAN member countries should seek for opportunities to learn and share each other’s success and obstacles. In addition, they should find stages for imparting body of knowledge related to cultural tourism management, and local wisdom accelerated in their societies to public. For these reasons, Silpakorn University International Affairs Office are pleased to organize a Seminar and Workshop on Cultural Tourism Management in ASEAN”, marking the auspicious occasion of H.R.H.
