Adventures on Promise Island Many years ago I recall a preacher saying, “The greatest adventure in life is found in knowing and serving Jesus Christ.” This month we’re going to get a good taste of what that means. Vacation Bible School is just four weeks away and our theme this year is “Adventures on Promise Island.” As our promotional materials describe it, “Come join us for Adventures on Promise Island – where kids discover God’s lifesaving love!” For Archdale United Methodist Church, our “adventure” begins on Monday evening, June 25, and continues through Thursday evening, June 28. Registration gets started at 5:30 and each night’s activities begin at 6:00. Vacation Bible School is open to all kids age three through fifth grade. Through stories, games, songs, crafts and service, our young people will experience three of God’s most important promises: “I am with you.” “I care about you.” “I give you what you need.” Let’s get ready now for a wonderful Bible school. Let’s get ready by praying for Vacation Bible School. Pray for all of the preparations that go into this special week. Pray that God would draw many children to join us for this great time. Pray for our leaders and volunteers. Let’s get ready by volunteering to serve. This year’s Bible school coordinators are Lisa Hunter and Tanya Blossom. If you have not done so already, contact them and let them know that you would like to serve. Let’s get ready by reaching out and inviting others to Vacation Bible School. Every one of us can think of grandchildren, nieces, nephews, classmates and neighbors who would receive a blessing from Bible school. I challenge you to demonstrate the love of Jesus by inviting them and offering to bring them each night. See you at the big Adventure!

The shepherd’s crook is a symbol for Jesus, the Good Shepherd. “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep” (John 10:11). The crook also symbolizes the shepherds who visited the baby Jesus in Bethlehem. It’s also used in connection with King David, who had been a shepherd when he was young.

Children learn more from what we do than what we say. I think all of us would agree with that statement. We are fortunate in our church to have a lot of great men and Dads that attend very regularly and are quite active in church. Another statement I think you would all agree with is we want our children to go to church when they become adults. Guess what? A study in 1994 in Switzerland shows that our Dads at AUMC are on the right path for this to happen. This study shows that if a father and mother both attend church with their children regularly that 33% of the children will be regularly in church and 41% will attend church irregularly when they are an adult. If the mother attends church with the children regularly but the father is very irregular in his attendance, only 3% of his children will statistically be regular church attenders and 59% will attend irregularly. If the father does not go to church at all and the mother attends regularly, only 2% of kids will go to church regularly when they are older, with 37% attending irregularly. (www.touchstonemag.com) Why does a father’s presence in church affect children so much? One reason might be that children get the idea that church is not really important if Dad does not go. Another idea is it is okay for Moms to go to church, but it is not the macho thing to do if Dad does not go. Another misconception children might get is that Dads have more important or better things to do than attend church. How sad! According to a 5/11/2012 article in USA Today, Mother’s Day attendance at church is the third largest Sunday in the year, behind Easter and Christmas. Mothers will say their best gift would be for all the family to attend church together on Mother’s Day. What do Father’s wish for on Father’s Day? The number one answer was “play golf”. I am not against playing golf, but come to church with the family in the morning and play golf in the afternoon! I was going to do an article to match last month’s with famous fathers in history. I kept getting silly results, like Homer Simpson and The Family Guy. It seems like no one takes the father’s role as seriously as the mother’s role in religious education of the children, but this study really shows us what we all knew – it is very important to set the example for our children. Church is for women, children, AND men! So you see men, you ARE important! Thank you for being such great Dads and role models! I usually end with, “I’ll see you in church,” but on Father’s Day, I will be on my first vacation of this year. I will see you every other Sunday in June, but please hug my great Dad for me on June 17th! I am very blessed to have such great parents! Keep the faith, women AND men! Love,

Cheryl

Rising Sixth-Graders - Tdap Vaccine North Carolina law requires all sixth-grade students to get a Tdap booster shot if it has been five or more years since their last dose. Tdap protects children from tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis (more commonly known as whooping cough). By state law, students must show proof of receiving the Tdap vaccine at the start of their sixth-grade school year or school districts are required to suspend them from school. Parents of rising sixth-graders, call your pediatrician or local health department to discuss getting this scheduled for your child.
