Stade Toulousain

A passion | a unique model| a culture The founding of the club In 1890, Toulouse students initiated the practice of rugby in Lycée Pierre de Fermat and at Prairie des Filtres sports ground. In 1903, the « Sport Olympien des Etudiants de Toulouse » chaired by Ernest Wallon (professor and dean of the faculty of law) played the championship final on their land against the Stade Français. In 1907, Stade Toulousain was officially formed, as an almagation of two students clubs. Ernest Wallon and a few friends created an association called “les Amis du Stade Toulousain”, and purchased land in the Ponts Jumeaux disctrict of Toulouse in order to build sports facilities. Ernest Wallon became the Stade Toulousain first President and gave the club his name in 1921. Red and black colours were chosen as a reminder of the former Capitoul’s robes. The Red Virgin In 1912, at the end of an outstanding season, Stade Toulousain won the title of Champion of the Pyrénées, before facing the Racing Club de France in the cup final, on their Pont-Jumeaux home ground. The team won the first Bouclier de Brennus of their history. Dutour, Jauréguy, Fozières, Maysonnié, Struxiano et Mounicq were the heroes of this game the team won 8-6. Being undefeated during the whole season, Stade Toulousain was then nicknamed “La Vierge Rouge”

A passion | a unique model| a culture A long history Following the 1980 final, lost against Béziers by a glittering team led by Rives, Skrela, Martinez, Rancoule, Novès and Gabernet, the club created a framework and a method that they still rely on nowadays. Between the 1984 to 1989 euphoric years, Stade Toulousain brought a complete revolution to the game, first initiated by Robert Bru, and then modelled by the duo Villepreux / Skrela. During the fabulous decade which followed, the team led by Guy Noves won four championship titles in a row (1994 to 1997). This achievement remains unmatched. In 1996, the club won the first ever European Cup title. Fantastic players such as Charvet, Bonneval, Cigagna, Claude Portolan, Berty, Castaignède, Califano, Ntamack and Pelous, have played a huge role in this extraordinary saga, and have left a giant footprint upon the lawn of the SeptDeniers stadium.
