Mid-Rivers Returns over $1 Million in Capital Credits

Featured Photo: The featured photo for the 2015 Fall 411 was submitted to the Mid-Rivers Photo Contest by Jody Haidle. This photo was taken on teh Fallon Flat located southeast of Fallon, MT.

Did you Know... • Mid-Rivers was established in 1952. • Mid-Rivers operates over 10,500 route miles of telephone line. Approximately 2,700 miles of fiber optic cable are installed in Mid-Rivers’ service area, with more fiber continually being installed.

On Friday, August 7, 2015, Mid-Rivers Telephone Cooperative, Inc. mailed capital credit checks of approximately $1,061,000 to its members and patrons. The 2015 distribution of capital credits represents 35% of the remaining balance of the 1993 patronage allocation, as well as 15% of the 2014 patronage allocation. Receiving capital credit checks is just one of the many benefits of utilizing the services of a cooperative. A cooperative business is owned and democratically controlled by its member patrons. Any profit is distributed to patrons in proportion to their use, or “patronage,” of the cooperative’s services. Mid-Rivers Telephone Cooperative uses both the “first-in, first-out” and the percentage methods of distribution to allow both new and past patrons the opportunity to share in the benefits of the cooperative by receiving capital credit checks. 584-7596

Payment of capital credits is made only if the financial condition of the cooperative permits as determined by the Board of Trustees. Mid-Rivers’ financial condition has allowed regular and substantial payment of capital credits in recent years. However, decreased revenues caused by regulatory and other changes in the telecommunications industry may affect Mid-Rivers’ ability to continue to make regular and/or substantial capital credit payments in the future. Including the 2015 payment, MidRivers has returned approximately $39 million in capital credits to its members.

Beware of Phishing! Phishing emails are emails that are sent with the purpose of tricking the recipient into opening the email and clicking on a link in the email to install malware on the recipient’s computer. Some phishing emails will attempt to gather personal information from the recipient. There are a couple of warning signs that will help identify this as a scam. The email example to the right has been received by several Mid-Rivers customers and is a good example of a phishing attempt. This particular attempt is designed to appear as though it originated from Mid-Rivers. • Check the sender. This email is from a sender not using a Mid-Rivers email address. Emails from Mid-Rivers Communications will originate from an email address with the domain of @midrivers.coop ([email protected]) • Mid-Rivers will never ask for personal account information via email.

• Place your mouse over any of the links, without clicking, in an email like the example above and you will see that the name of the website hosting the link does not match a likely domain name that the supposed sender would use. In this example the links did not lead to a www.midrivers.com domain. The best way to protect yourself from attempts like these is to not click on any link in an email message sent to you if you have any concerns about the source of the email. If in doubt, manually enter the web address of the company, www.midrivers.com in this case, into your web browser or search for the company in your favorite search engine. If you do click on a link in an email and get unexpected results, make sure to run a scan of your computer with an updated anti-virus program and it would be a good idea to also run a malware scan with a program like Malwarebytes found at http://www.malwarebytes.org/. 742-8387

Tech Tip: Take Care of Your Wi-Fi

Home technology is continually changing the way we access information. From checking the weather to cooking dinner, Wi-Fi is integral in almost every part of our lives. Now that Internet is an everyday essential, it is more important than ever to have a home Wi-Fi network that is able to keep up with your Internet needs. To ensure that your Wi-Fi enabled devices have a strong connection throughout your home or yard, follow these basic tips to help maximize your Wi-Fi Signal. • Place your Router in Central Location Think of the signal from your Wi-Fi router as a ripple in the water. If you toss a stone into the middle of the pond, the ripple will reach further and be more uniform than if you toss the stone near the bank or other obstruction. Likewise, a Wi-Fi router that is placed centrally can reach further and provide a better signal quality than a router that is place in another part of the home. • Remove Interference Wi-Fi signals can be affected by any number of items in your home. A cordless telephone, radio, microwave, baby monitor, or other home appliances can affect the signal from your wireless router. To reduce the interference, try placing your router in a location away from other appliances that use a radio frequency.

• Secure Yo u r Wi-Fi A secure W i - F i connection not only h e l p s protect your signal from being used by any passerby, it can also protect your personal information and documents from being accessed by any unauthorized people. Adding a password to your Wi-Fi will help ensure that only authorized devices are using your signal, and eliminate any loss of signal strength due to a Wi-Fi thief. If you think that your WiFi is being used by an unauthorized person, open your router settings and check to see which devices are accessing your signal. If you see any devices you don’t recognize, change the password on your router immediately. • Get Help from the Experts Don’t have the time or technical expertise to deal with these issues? We can help. Call Mid-Rivers today at 1-800-452-2288 and ask about our Ultimate Connected Home WiFi Bundle. Our tech professionals will install and support the Wi-Fi networking equipment you need and optimize your home network for the best possible coverage.

We urge you to celebrate national Cooperative Month this October by learning more about Mid-Rivers and all your cooperatives. A cooperative is a business that is owned by the people it serves, to benefit the people it serves. Cooperatives are under the democratic control of their members and the Board of Trustees, who is elected from the members by the members. Surplus revenues are returned to members of the co-op in the form of capital credits, proportionate to how much a member uses the cooperatives services.
