REFLECTIONS ON PRAYER

(adapted from Everyday Simplicity, a guide to spiritual growth, by Robert Wicks)

"Looking for God in prayer is like looking for a path in a field of untrodden snow.  Walk across the snow, and there is your path" (Thomas Merton}.  Our prayer sometimes feels flat.  This need not be a problem, unless we become overly discouraged.  Accept that it will never be perfect, just keep praying.   "Pray always and do not lose heart" {Luke 18.1).  What are the areas in my life that require the greatest perseverance?   "Courage comes and goes.  Hold on the next supply" (Thomas Merton)   Lord, let me hold these words in my heart, so that when I'm feeling down I do not lose heart.   "I never ask God for success.  I only ask for wonder, and God gives it to me every day" (Abraham Heschel). How can I have low expectation and high hopes?  How can I open myself to understand God's will for me, and not just what I want?   "Where your treasure is, there is your heart" (Matthew 6.12).   What is it that stirs the greatest emotion in me - positive and negative?  How can I enjoy life without grasping, and without fear of losing what I most desire?    Instead of asking "Am I getting what I want or deserve", ask "Am I enjoying to the fullest what is already in my life"?   "Happiness will only be truly felt when you don't set any conditions."  (Arthur Rubenstein)

To all our readers, have a blessed and fun summer!     Fr. Joe

CONGRATULATIONS

It was a beautiful warm spring evening and the bride and groom were happily embarking on sealing their relationship into a Mr. and Mrs. agreement. Judy and Steve are now the Murphys and were blessed into this union by Father Joe on Friday, May 3rd. The ceremony was witnessed by Steve’s son and daughter, two long-time friends and a few parishioners. Following the service they enjoyed a light meal at the Old Erie Restaurant in Weedsport. Members of our parish are happy to welcome the newlyweds into our congregation.

Once again the weather cooperated and between 40 to 47 motorcyclists (depending on your count) including the Star Society Motorcycle Club and a young bicyclist gathered at Christ Church for the annual Blessing of the Bikes on May 18th. Father Joe conducted a short service and then withdrew to the church parking lot to bless the riders and their bikes with holy water. (We have some great pictures of this activity.) The bikers then went for a ride through Memphis, Skaneateles Falls, and back to our church for an indoor picnic of hotdogs, hamburgers, salads, dessert and beverages. In appreciation for the meal provided by our membership, the riders were generous in their praise, thanks, and donations to us. As usual, it was an all-

ALERT

The Jordan Village-wide Garage Sale is scheduled for Saturday, July 13, starting at 9AM. We are appealing to our membership for good used contributions from your attic, basement, or garage for us to sell as a fundraiser for the church. We are also planning a chicken barbeque for that day. Details to follow. July 13th is not that far away so start your search and call Connie at 689-3141 for a time to drop off items. Gwen Corser The traditional Memorial Day Service for those laid to rest at Maple Grove Cemetery this past year included former church members Dorothy Clements, Ross Wightman, and Ruth Manley. Hymns were sung, a short homily was given, and candles were lit to honor the departed. This service is a ministry of the J-E Area Church Board. Music is provided by Hawley Arnold, Music Director, of Jordan United Methodist Church. Gwen Corser

We will miss Reverend Jim Stone of the Elbridge Community Church and an active clergy member of the Jordan-Elbridge Area Church Board. Jim is leaving Elbridge and assuming a position at Hutchings Psychiatric Center and continuing his part- time clergy work at the Spiritual Center at Crouse Hospital. Pastor Jim celebrated his 30th year of Ordination with his congregation, friends, and family on May 19th. To honor the occasion, a party atmosphere was held at his church. Our thanks to Jim for his service to the community and our best wishes to him in all of his future endeavors.

A FLOWERY THANK YOU Many thanks to Debora and David Ward for a donation of much needed mulch for our church gardens. Logan and Robert shoveled and wheelbarrow-ed the mulch around and Evelyn did the spreading. Flowers were donated by the Wards, Alan and Evelyn Simpson, Cherie Robinson, and Dale Burl. Then the Wards and Simpsons planted all around the church and even the wooden tub. I didn't make it to the planting, so I pulled weeds and hacked at one of the bushes out front that needed to be tamed. It all looked great for the Memorial Day Parade. Many thanks to you all. Now we just need to keep weeding!! ...Cherie Robinson...

Tested and verified at “Soup’s on Us” to be delicious!!!! Creamy Chicken Chowder 2-3 chicken breasts cut into small pieces 1 can mexican-style corn with peppers 1 can cream of potato soup 1 package of taco seasoning 1 tbsp fresh cilantro, snipped 3 cups chicken stock 1 cup sour cream 1/2 cup cheese... any kind –I used Wegman’s deli American For best results: use cheese that melts well and is creamy (I’ve also used Velveeta, cheese dip and cream cheese) Put chicken, corn, salsa and taco seasoning in crock pot. Add chicken stock and stir to mix ingredients. Cook on low for 4 hours. Remove 1 cup of cooked chowder to a separate bowl. Add sour cream and cheese, stir until cheese is melted. Pour chowder/cream/cheese mixture into crock pot. Stir and cook an additional 5-15 minutes.
