Impactful…exciting…ambitious… meaningful. These are the words that can be used to describe this past year. We’ve seen a lot of change in 2013-2014, this change has brought about deep reflection and new clarity regarding the Jasper Foundation, Inc. and the Newton County Community Foundation. We’re proud Finance Director Angie Walker, Program Director that the Foundation does not simCindy Francis, Executive Director Kristen Ziese, and interns Kalyn Welsh and Rachel Slauter. ply adapt to change. We drive it. The Foundation is poised to be the leader in developing passion and affinity to civic life, and this effort will begin at our own front door. In 2014, more than $111,000 in impact grant awards will be injected into the great Jasper and Newton County communities. In 2012, the community foundation awarded approximately $218,000. In 2013, the community foundation awarded nearly $410,000. In 2014, the foundation has already awarded more than $595,000 throughout Jasper and Newton County communities. Thank you to our Board Directors for striving to create an environment that expands a vision to impact community and improve the lives of our Jasper and Newton County citizens. We are pleased to historically offer significant scholarship and educational funding. The Board Directors for both counties believe it is important to move our communities forward in an impactful way in more of our strategic focus areas such as Arts and Culture, Community Initiatives, Education, Health Initiatives, Historic Preservation.

NEWTON COUNTY JACK SNELL MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP The Newton County Community Foundation is proud to offer two $1,000 scholarships in memory of Jack Snell, a lifelong area community advocate and teacher. Jack graduated from Morocco High School with the class of 1951. Mr. Snell graduated from Indiana State University in 1957 and went on to earn his master’s degree from Purdue University in 1960. Jack was a teacher and counselor in the Newton County Schools for 49 years, retiring in 1998. He served as Pastor of the Raub United Methodist Church in Raub, Indiana. Mr. Snell was a past member of the Lions Club, a Boy Scout Leader, and was the recipient of the Silver Beaver Award. Jack was a revolutionary guidance counselor as he forged the path for schools offering academic and career guidance to prepare for a post-secondary education. Mr. Snell was passionate about education and assisting young people to accomplish their dreams. The Newton County Community Foundation would like to thank his wife Sarah and the family, as well as those who contributed in memory of Jack. The family will award a $1,000 scholarship to a graduating senior at South Newton High School and a $1,000 scholarship to a graduating senior at North Newton High School in 2014.

Vision Ag, Inc. has established a $50,000 educational fund to assist students interested in agricultural fields of study throughout Jasper and Newton Counties. “We appreciate Vision Ag creating an opportunity for individuals interested in agricultural careers to pursue additional training as well as advancing their degrees,” Executive Director Kristen Ziese stated. Vision Ag, Inc. is contributing to the value of our community vitality and employment opportunities close to home. We appreciate Mr. and Mrs. DeWees, along with the Vision Ag team, for their recognition of hardworking young adults in our community and assisting to develop local career opportunities.

CAROL SUE HALE ENTREPRENEURSHIP FUND Carol Sue Hale of Wheatfield, Indiana, has graciously offered funds to allow area students to attend college pursuing opportunities in entrepreneurship and business. Carol is very passionate about allowing area youth to excel in small business opportunities, pursuing their passion, and building on their dreams. Carol, herself an entrepreneur, realized the power of small business enterprise, and through her success and growth would like to share the opportunity with young area students heading to college. The Jasper Foundation, Inc. is very proud to participate in assisting Carol and her family to move our community forward and launch young entrepreneurs in their careers. Additionally, through Carol’s assistance, impactful educational programs, training, and mentoring will become available to Jasper and Newton County individuals who have the determination to excel in entrepreneurship. J.C. STEPPING STONE FUND The J.C. Stepping Stone Fund was established by anonymous donors in the Rensselaer area who are passionate about offering a stepping stone to non-profit organizations that just need a little boost in moving the community forward. Organizations and the volunteers driving them who have demonstrated the perseverance and determination to accomplish a goal sometimes need some financial assistance to “get to the next step,” stated the donors. Of modest education backgrounds, the donors have been considering an impactful gift for a while, and they came to visit with the foundation to discuss impactful areas for donation. “Together, we determined where they are most passionate and finalized their new family fund. It has been my pleasure to assist this family, who are stakeholders in the community, see their dreams come true,” stated Executive Director Kristen Ziese.

TERRY D. ELIJAH ENDOWMENT FUND The Jasper Foundation, Inc. has graciously received an award exceeding $900,000 in memory of Terry D. Elijah. Mr. Elijah was very committed to his family and agriculture. At the time of his passing, Elijah was passionate about his family’s legacy, thus creating the Terry D. Elijah Endowment Fund for the benefit of his lifelong community. Terry D. Elijah was born in Rensselaer on August 4, 1942. At the time of his passing in June of 2009, he was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church of Rensselaer. He was a very active participant of Masonic organizations, holding membership to the Prairie Lodge #125 F&AM in Rensselaer. Elijah was a member of Rensselaer High School Class of 1960. He participated in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and was President his senior year. Additionally, he participated in Band, Chorus, Photography Club, and the National Thespian Society. Elijah graduated from Indiana University Northwest in 1968. He attended Purdue University as a postgraduate student and attended Notre Dame School of Law. Elijah worked as an Internal Auditor for Standard Oil in Chicago until he returned home to care for his father and manage the family farm. “The Jasper Foundation, Inc. is honored to continue Mr. Elijah’s legacy, and we are pleased to continue to play an active role in moving our community forward through Mr. Elijah’s generous donation,” stated Executive Director Kristen Ziese.

TED FILSON MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP The Ted Filson Memorial Scholarship was established by his wife, Charlotte (Current) Filson, and encouraged by her children and grandchildren in loving memory of Mr. Filson for the Rensselaer community. Ted was born in Chicago, Illinois, on October 11, 1926, to Thomas Filson and Florence ( Johnson) Filson. Ted graduated from Wheatfield High School in 1945 and moved to Rensselaer in 1958. Mr. Filson was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in the Philippines during World War II. Mr. Filson worked diligently in the community for over 40 years, volunteering with the Lions Club, American Legion Post #29, and VFW Post #1279 in Rensselaer. Members of the Kniman United Methodist Church, Charlotte and Ted were married on September 3, 1948, in Crown Point, Indiana, and lived in Kniman for ten years prior to moving into the Rensselaer community in 1958. After establishing Filson Electric in Kniman, Ted began the Rensselaer Cable TV Company in 1964 along with a variety of sister cable companies throughout Indiana and Ohio. Mr. Filson enjoyed business; he read The Wall Street Journal every day and time with his family. Charlotte is active with the Kniman United Methodist Church, and she enjoys bowling with the Rensselaer Bowling League and playing Bunko. Ted and Charlotte with their family have enjoyed many fishing trips. The Jasper Foundation, Inc. would like to thank Charlotte, their six children, Larry, Steve (Susan, deceased), Cheryl (Kevin) Armstrong, Michael, Ron (Michelle), and Mary, as well as their grandchildren and great-grandchildren for their generous gift honoring Ted Filson.

JOY STOWERS MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FUND Joy Stowers was a pillar in the music communities throughout Newton and Jasper County as well as the entire state of Indiana. Stower not only achieved greatness through her musical brilliance, but was dedicated to sharing music with others. She worked tirelessly to increase our community’s awareness of music. Joy devoted herself to the Newton and Jasper Community Band, offered many private lessons, was a teacher in the area school systems, and performed all aspects of church music at Brushwood United Methodist Church as well as a variety of area churches. Scholarships in memory of Joy will be awarded to Rensselaer High School or South Newton High School students pursuing a degree in music, education, and/or Christian Ministry. Joy struggled with health-related issues for many years of her life; however, her efforts were above and beyond what most healthy people are able to accomplish. “The Jasper Foundation is very proud that the Stowers family selected the Jasper Foundation, Inc. to execute the Joy Stowers Memorial Scholarship Fund,” stated Executive Director Kristen Ziese.

L I L LY R E C I P I E N T : J A S P E R C O U N T Y Brooks S. Rodibaugh - is the son of Steve and Shannon Rodibaugh of Rensselaer, IN. He is a senior at Rensselaer Central High School planning to attend Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. Here Brooks plans to pursue a degree in Biochemistry/Molecular Biology. After he completes his undergraduate degree, Brooks plans to attend medical school to obtain a medical doctorate. With this he hopes to specialize in pathology or become an internist. As well as practicing medicine, he aspires to one day teach at the college level. Brooks has shown not only through his academic achievements, but also through his long list of extracurricular activities and community service.

L I L LY R E C I P I E N T : N E W T O N C O U N T Y Taylor J. Rhoads - is the daughter of Mark and Angela Rhoads of Goodland, IN. Taylor is a senior of South Newton High School. After graduation she plans to attend Purdue University. After her undergraduate degree is completed, Taylor hopes to attend medical school at Indiana University School of Medicine. Here she hopes to study at least one semester abroad. Her academic record is outstanding, achieving the Student of Highest Distinction, and being placed on the A honor roll; both for 3 years. While keeping up with her academics, Taylor has also participated in a variety of extracurricular activities.
