A Mother’s Creed

Ten Affirmations for Raising Children • I will worry less about my children and trust God more. • I will commit them into the Lord’s care. • I will love my children unconditionally and let them know I do. • I will believe in them constantly and encourage them often. • I will nurture my children in the truth of God’s Word. • I will pray for them daily. • I will teach them responsibility for their own actions. • I will try to be an example of godliness and beauty, but I will be unafraid to let them see my faults. • I will give them generous doses of laughter, interspersed with fun. • I will release them when they are grown, but they will always be my own. —Rebecca Barlow Jordan

A “GOOD MAN” FINISHES HIS COURSE The scriptures declare in Psalm 37:23, “The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord: and he delighteth in his way.” When I think of Larry Rogers, I cannot get away from the phrase “a good man.” On January 18, 2012, Larry Rogers, “a good man,” left this world and came face to face with the Lord, whom he had served nearly all of his 82 years. Brother Larry, as I always called him, was married to Margaret Bishop Rogers for 55 years. He has two brothers, Joe and Doyle Rogers. Attending his service were host pastor, Dr. C. R. Conner; former Appalachian Conference superintendent, Rev. Edward W. Wood; close friend and caretaker, Rev. Don Sizemore; present conference superintendent, Bishop K. Preston Mathena; and general World Missions director, Dr. Doug Beacham. Brother Larry entered the ministry after attending Holmes College of the Bible, Greenville, S.C., and became the pastor of Mitchelltown Pentecostal Holiness Church (now Life Line Ministries) upon graduation. I became acquainted with Brother Larry when he became my pastor at Shenandoah Pentecostal Holiness Church in 1956. I remember him as a tall, lean, lanky preacher who was always involved with the church youth. After the funeral 1929 - 2012 service, a fellow minister came to me and told me that when he was a boy in Shenandoah, Larry would pick up his brothers and him to bring them to church. This was the kind of life this “good man” lived. Larry didn’t just preach the Word of God––he lived it every day of his life. Brother Larry also pastored in Bluefield, West Virginia, and Saint Albans, West Virginia. As pastor of these churches, he was always doing ministry that affected the communities where he lived. While pastor at Saint Albans, Larry negotiated with the United States government concerning the church operating a government housing project, with the prospect of the church owning the property after 40 years. As a result of the negotiations, that property belongs to Saint Albans church today, and a recent assessment makes the property net worth several million dollars. At an age that most individuals are contemplating retiring, Brother Larry received an awakening from the Lord, and instead of retiring, he “re-fired” to the mission field in a restricted country. He and Margaret then spent the next 18 years working among the Berber people of that country. His love and desire to evangelize these people never waned in his life. Although sickness racked his body, until his death, his greatest desire was to return to the mission field and finish his work. Brother Larry served the Appalachian Conference as a board member for several years. He worked with young people at youth camp from his earliest ministry days, doing crafts and nature studies. When Royal Rangers called upon him to teach nature study at their Pow Wow, he did not hesitate. At conference workday, Brother Larry was always there to work. He especially enjoyed stripping and waxing the cafeteria area. He was a tremendous worker who always did his best. He always did it in a “white shirt and tie.” Brother Larry and Sister Margaret had no children of their own, but they became parents to countless young people in this conference and in the community where they lived. There is so much more to tell, but I am persuaded that all of the things they have done in secret, God will reveal in His time. Larry Rogers was a “good man,” and I quote Numbers 23:10, “Let me die the death of the righteous, and let my last end be like his!” –Dr. C.R. Conner

Greetings From Margaret Rogers Many of you read the article in the December 1991 issue of the Virginia Conference Messenger (now Appalachian Messenger) that related Larry’s vision from the Lord that sent us to North Africa. In the vision he was told, “Go to the House of Barbar and effect a blood transfusion. This is a people bent on self-destruction.” Your churches provided opportunities for us to come and present the need of pursuing the call. In the August 1994 issue of the Appalachian Conference Messenger, you were able to read about Larry and Margaret reflecting on the last 15 months in that country. This article included a picture of Larry greeting a Berber in his goat-hair tent. After these articles, we had to go undercover with no publications or pictures shown. This low profile was necessary in order for us to remain in the country. We worked in this fashion from 1993-2010, when Larry’s poor health brought us back to the States. He fought the cancerous condition so bravely for two years with the thought of recovering and returning to work again in the country. He finally looked up at us and said, “I have a message. There is only ‘One Way’ and I am so glad I went to tell about the ‘One Way,’ but now I am going to meet the saints.” So on January 18, 2012, he left us to join the saints. All the 17 years we spent there you gracious people never ceased to hold us up with your prayers and finances. Your investment in the kingdom work is awaiting a reward in heaven. As I step down and bring closure to my time in the country, I would like to convey to you so many thanks that Larry and I were always mentioning to others of our generous people in America. Now the work goes on. Please continue to support others who go with the message. Jonathan and Corrie Shirey will be in Spain training others to return to their home country with the message. I offer that name as a good one to continue supporting. God always smiles on missions givers! Voice of t h e A ppA l Achi A n confe r e nce of t h e iphc

WORLD MISSIONS NEWS

HAVE YOU HEARD? There is good news concerning our spirit of giving in the Appalachian Conference. We are giving more generously to world missions! Our Global Outreach (GO) offering has increased by $12,000, and our overall missions giving for 2011 is back to pre-recession levels. Thanks to all of you who have given! Continue to believe that we as a family of churches will take our giving to the next level: $200,000 for GO and one million dollars for overall missions giving. We can be a million-dollar conference! There is no other reason for this God-sized goal except for ministry to be multiplied into souls being saved in the U.S. and around the world! This year’s attendance at district Global Banquets was up over 20 percent in churches represented. The GO pledges are running ahead of last year’s totals. This gives us fresh momentum to carry into the Global Outreach service. You don’t want to miss this year’s service (June 15 at 7:00 p.m.). Rev. Stacy Hilliard, a dynamic and anointed preacher, will be our speaker. Congratulations to Pastor David Goad of Indian Valley PHC, who won the Kindle in the district drawing. 2011 Missions Giving Global Outreach Offering – $142,089 Total Missions Giving – $808,774 Top 3 Churches in Global outreach offering Christiansburg–Pastor Richard Kingrea $10,550 Shenandoah–Pastor Mike Reynolds $6,200 Roanoke–Pastor Tony Atkinson $6,115 Top 3 Churches in overall World Missions Giving Winchester–Pastor Ron Neff $69,680 Roanoke–Pastor Tony Atkinson $37,295 Christiansburg–Pastor Richard Kingrea $35,273

CHURCH PLANTING NEWS We give a big Appalachian Conference welcome to New Beginnings Ministries in Athens, Tenn. Pastor James Frye has brought this church family into the conference. Freedom Family Worship Center in Kingsport, Tenn., reports anointed and well-attended services since reopening in October. Pastor Eric Lockett is averaging in the 40s in attendance and recently doubled the facility space to accommodate ministry. First Fruit Ministries of Grottoes, Va., held an organizational service in April. Pastor Daniel Vest also celebrated the church’s one-year anniversary. He is leading the church in engaging the community by providing a clothes closet and other need-based ministries.

Missionaries Rick and LaTrissia Black (pictured above) will be returning to Costa Rica in mid-June. Keep them in your prayers, as they have a busy schedule with multiple projects and a Latin American youth conference coming up.

Diet and Exercise Have you ever purchased a piece of exercise equipment? You waited excitedly for it to arrive. You opened it, set it up and then used it to hang clothes on, collect dust and just be a piece of unused furniture. This time of year we are bombarded with advertisements of a multitude of diets and merchandise to give you a beautiful body. But our part is to apply it; quit eating the sugar, and get on the treadmill. God has prepared a banquet full of blessings for you. He wants you to have a healthy body, enough money to pay the bills, extra to invest in the gospel, a godly marriage and happy, healthy children and peace of mind. He came that we might have life and have it to the fullest till it overflows. Isaiah 1:19 says, “If ye be willing and obedient, ye shall eat the good of the land.” God wants us to eat properly and exercise to keep our bodies healthy and strong. One thing we must do to have a healthy body is to walk the love walk. Researchers have discovered that hostility produces stress that causes ulcers, tension headaches and a host of other ills. And it’s not necessarily the big things, but the little things. For example, when the waitress never returns to your table, the car in front of you goes too slow, or your spouse doesn’t put the lid back on the toothpaste. Think of how much stress you could avoid by being quick to forgive. Something else you must do is to see yourself strong. God tells us we are more than conquerors, overcomers in this life. How do you see yourself? Do you see yourself as terrifying and a mighty warrior for God, or do you see yourself as a wimp that the devil can whip any minute? Israel’s failure to enter the Promised Land is found in this statement: “And we were in our own sight as grasshoppers, and so we were in their sight” (Numbers 13:33). As a part of the body of Christ, you need to make sure that your part of the body is healthy, strong and terrifying to the enemy, “For bodily exercise profits a little, but godliness is profitable for all things, having promise of the life that now is and of that which is to come” (1 Timothy 4:8, NKJV). Matthew 4:4 says, “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God” (NKJV). The word of God is to your spirit as bread is to your body. If you never get on the treadmill, you’ll never burn the calories. If you never pick up the Word of God, you’ll never know His promises. We are the temple of the Lord. Our bodies are merely vehicles for fulfilling His purpose on the earth. This month, make it a priority to eat properly and stay in the Word.

MENE, MENE, TEKEL, UPHARSIN! These HEAVENLY words were written by a HEAVENLY HAND in plain sight for King Belshazzar to see. At the time of this writing, the King was hosting a party using the holy vessels from God’s Temple. Daniel was the only one able to interpret the message. The King said, “But I have heard of you, that you can make interpretations and solve knotty problems” (Daniel 5:16, Amplified Version, emphasis added).

WHaT doeS IT Mean? The meaning is: numbered, numbered, weighed, divisions! To the king, the message was, “God has numbered your Kingdom, and finished it … You have been weighed in the balances, and found wanting … Your Kingdom has been divided, and given to the Medes and Persians” (vv. 26-28).

doWnFall oF kInG BelSHaZZar Before the night was over, the king died, and the kingdom was taken by Darius the Mede. Daniel, the prophet, informed the king that PRIDE and DISHONORING GOD were sins which displeased the Lord of Hosts (v. 23).

delIVeranCe For kInG HeZekIaH King Hezekiah was also given a message by a prophet that he would die. However, King Hezekiah did something to REVERSE this decision. The king TURNED his face to the wall and PRAYED to the Lord. He reminded God that he had served Him with a whole heart. Also, he had celebrated the Passover (Isaiah 38). He HUMBLED himself and PRAYED.

reVerSe THe WrITInG The HUMILITY, the TEARS, and the PRAYERS saved King Hezekiah!
