A modern railway for a thriving region...

Since 1999, the number of passengers travelling by train on our routes has risen by over 75%.

We’ve achieved so much already

Getting you there on time

But we know that in order to continue growing rail travel on our network, we need to continue to seek improvements and deliver sustainable results at every single point of a passenger’s rail journey.

East Midlands Trains started in November 2007 and we’ve wasted no time in making a start on improvements and planning a brighter future for our passengers.

Figures announced in Autumn 2008 show average punctuality at 90.9%, the best recorded since the start of the franchise and over 3% better than performance for the previous operators for the same period. The improvements in punctuality so far are the result of an internal improvement drive including:

In order to mobilise our entire workforce behind this ambition, we have created a vision, by which we will operate everyday, and which we truly believe in:

Of course, a huge part of our franchise is the £90m programme of investment planned over the coming years and that’s very exciting. But we have also made a number of changes over our first few months to benefit passengers ahead of the spending spree.

We know that our passengers want safe, reliable trains, and we are determined to deliver this, day in day out. Through our own internal improvement initiative, and by working closely with Network Rail, our passengers are already starting to see real improvements.

• Launch of the ‘Right Time Railway’, an initiative to improve train punctuality, which has included issuing watches that are accurate to the second and new whistles to all staff to emphasise the importance of consistent on time despatch of trains • Move to a new joint control centre, shared with Network Rail, to improve communication on day to day operation of services • Investing in reliability modifications to our trains

“Growing our business through great people, delivering great service, achieving great results”. As part of the Stagecoach Group, we’ve got the experience and expertise to deliver effective improvements that make a real difference to our customers. And, because our network serves some of the UK’s most important towns and cities, we know what a difference excellent rail links can make in delivering sustainable economic development. But we can’t do it alone. We’re committed to working with the Government and our local and regional stakeholders and communities to make things happen and to keep on improving.

We’re pleased with the results already seen – just think what you can expect once the investment takes place. Here is a flavour of what we’ve already achieved.

• Improved processes, including better contingency plans and a new performance management system. With performance already consistently good and improving everyday, and with so much investment in our fleet and depots on the horizon, we’re confident we can get even better.

Making our trains more reliable It’s fair to say that when we started the franchise some of our trains, especially on our local routes, were not performing as we had hoped and were in need of a little tender loving care. A great deal of behind the scenes work has been going on to address this, much of it involving the maintenance and improvement of the engines. One example of the good work has been the attention our Class 158 fleet has received. These trains were not as reliable as expected and by working with our sister company, South West Trains, we were able to ensure these trains received an immediate ‘health check’ and subsequently formulate a programme of modifications. South West Trains achieve great standards of performance for their fleet and we’re confident we can replicate that here in the East Midlands.

Putting passengers first

First impressions count!

• Offering great value for money – We already sell thousands of Advance tickets (to London priced from £7 online) everyday. But to complement this, we launched the hugely popular megatrain.com concept on our route at the start of 2008. This is an innovative online budget rail service offering seats from just £1 (plus a 50p booking fee). And by the end of the Summer, more than 60,000 people had booked a bargain ticket to travel!

If the outside of the train looks dirty and uncared for it reflects on everything we do. And at the start of the franchise some of our trains were not up to our standards. We’ve therefore been investing heavily to ensure our trains are always well presented.

• Prompt, accurate information – Introduction of a UK based Call Centre. We know that our passengers want prompt, accurate information, provided to them by a trained advisor who understands the UK rail network. This is what we are now delivering for them with the opening of our UK based information centre in the Spring of 2008. • Easy links to Eurostar – Ooo la la! If you travel by East Midlands Trains you’re just one platform change away from Europe. St Pancras International is our home station in London. It is also the London terminal of Eurostar, so accessing their high-speed services could not be easier. Travel from Paris to Leicester in less than 4 hours without the interruptions you get when you fly. We’ve introduced through fares in partnership with Eurostar offering passengers travel from the East Midlands to Paris or Brussels from just £79 return for the complete journey. • We’re listening to you – Got a burning question? We want to hear it! We have held a number of open forums for passengers to meet our directors and senior managers. Known as ‘Meet the Manager’ these sessions are held either at our stations or on our trains and give people the chance to put their questions directly to the people at the top. • Improvements for business customers – Keep in touch with free WiFi in our First Class lounges. During 2008 we have installed free WiFi for all First Class passengers in our lounges at Derby, Leicester and St Pancras International. WiFi is coming soon to Sheffield, Chesterfield and Nottingham stations too! • Good food on the move – Restaurant quality food, served at over 100mph! We’ve introduced a brand-new menu for First Class passengers, offering tasty dishes such as beef in ale or mushroom stroganoff. As part of the new range, and following extensive feedback from our passengers, we pledged to continue offering First Class passengers the popular full cooked Great British Breakfast – prepared by a chef on board the train. We offer quality food at a competitive price throughout the day. • Improved parking – We’ve already provided 350 extra parking spaces at our stations, with a further 850 planned at East Midlands Parkway station, just minutes from Junction 24 of the M1.

• We’ve installed a new exterior train washing facility at our Nottingham depot • Our Meridian trains now have an engine modification fitted to prevent oil from spraying up the side of the trains. We think they’re looking a lot smarter as a result • We’ve invested in two, new ‘super cleaning’ machines to give our train interiors a clean like they’ve never had before.

New franchise – new look We’re a new franchise and as you’d expect we have a brand-new identity too, which has been steadily growing since our launch. Much of our fleet is already repainted in our distinctive colours. And as part of our investment programme every single one of our trains will be completely refurbished inside and out during our franchise. We’ve also given our staff a smart new look by introducing a new uniform that we’re very proud of.

And there’s lots more to come We’re moving fast to bring you the improvements you’d expect from an efficient and modern train service. And by doing this, we’ll make it easier than ever for more passengers to make rail their first choice for travel. By investing £90 million into passenger improvements over the next six years, we will give our passengers the rail services they deserve.

A new and improved timetable Our rail services are key to the sustainable economic development of the towns, cities and villages we serve. Our trains provide fast and frequent links between city centres, as well as being an increasingly popular choice for commuters and shoppers. With this in mind, we are making some big and exciting changes to our timetable. Our brand-new timetable (launched in December 2008), brings new and improved services to the communities on our network, making sure we can offer a modern railway to our thriving communities. With faster journey times for many cities on our route, better connections, more trains where they’re needed most, more seats and extra Sunday services, over 18 months of hard work has gone into producing the best possible timetable for our passengers. And we’re confident these changes will mean more and more people making rail their number one choice of transport. For further information or to download a personalised timetable, visit eastmidlandstrains.co.uk/myjourneys.

Raising the standard We know that by making improvements to our trains we can make a real difference to our passengers.

Improved Sunday services

And with over £26 million to spend on our trains over the next few years, passengers will certainly notice the differences we’ll be making.

We are committed to providing a reliable service everyday of the week – including Sundays!

Here’s just a few of the many highlights our passengers will see over the next couple of years:

Sounds obvious? Before the start of our franchise, on some Sundays there were as few as 50% of local services running because of a shortage of staff.

A favourite with many of our passengers, the High Speed Train fleet was last refurbished six years ago and is in need of a makeover. During 2009, we’ll be undertaking a refurbishment programme, which includes replacing seat upholstery and carpets to make them look more attractive, and fitting power sockets in First Class to make it easier for people to work on the move.

We know that our passengers want to see a reliable service they can count on. And we’re proud to say that since the start of the franchise we’ve run well over 95% of all Sunday services. This has been achieved through better management and with the flexibility and commitment of our staff. Reliable Sunday working is something we won’t compromise on going forward.

Helping the environment Consumers are becoming increasingly environmentally aware and are looking for more sustainable and cost effective ways to travel. Travelling by rail is clearly a ‘greener’ form of transport and this, coupled with rising fuel costs, can only encourage even more people to take the train.

And, so you can stay connected whilst on board – we’ll also be installing WiFi on these trains. Being able to work on the move is a key benefit of train travel – we’re doing even more to ensure that travel time can be working time, not wasted time. Our Meridian trains will also be getting a fresh look. As well as new seat upholstery, curtains and carpets in First Class bringing a much classier feel, we’ll also be introducing WiFi and improving mobile phone reception on these trains. And that’s because it’s something we know our passengers want.

A better place to catch your train We’ve already got some iconic stations on our network; St Pancras International, Sheffield and Lincoln to name a few. And, we’ve got two new stations opening, which will dramatically improve access to our train services. East Midlands Parkway, a purpose built station just off the M1 (at junction 24), gives people in the region more choice and provides an excellent alternative to the M1. And we’re putting the town of Corby back on the rail network map, with a new direct train service to London. But the good news doesn’t stop there. Over the next few years, we’ll also be investing over £5 million to make other station improvements, and our plans include enhanced car parking facilities, more ticket vending machines at stations, better customer information and improved security systems, such as CCTV and help-points. All of which are designed to make a journey with us even easier from start to finish.

Delivering a complete service We know that a number of crucial elements come together to make a good train journey for our passengers. And we also know that when we don’t get them right, they affect how passengers feel. So that’s why we’re making improvements in every area, from choosing the right train time by downloading a completely personalised timetable from our new website, to booking a ticket with us, and having access to our great, new, value megatrain fares priced from just £1 (plus 50p booking fee). We also work closely with our industry partners, such as travel management companies, to deliver a complete and consistent service to all our business passengers. Although we work hard to deliver a consistently great service, we’re also not too proud to admit that sometimes we get it wrong, and when we do, we want to make sure that we can put it right. We’ll be introducing a new delay compensation scheme in 2009, which will make sure that we have a consistent policy for all of our passengers, all of the time. In an ever changing world, we know that as a rail operator we cannot afford to settle for doing things in the way they’ve always been done. We are committed to taking the best of the railway in this region and are continually striving to make it better.
