Guest Instructions Playing one of our murder mysteries requires no special acting abilities, just a willingness to have fun. Our site gives you all the details you need to prepare for the party including character descriptions of all guests, internal information about your character (do not reveal this to others), and costume/prop recommendations. During the party, each of you will be given clues. The clues provide all the information required to unlock the mystery. Each clue is designated as a clue to be concealed or a clue to be revealed. Conceal clues are generally information about your character that you try to hide (without lying) from the others. Reveal clues are ones that you should share with others in casual conversation. Don't just read them off the page, absorb the information and try to stay in character. During the party, guests will ask questions about each other's character and about clues you have received. As the game progresses, you will gather more and more information and at the end of the allotted time you will need to sift through fact and fiction to decide who the murderer is. There are only a few simple rules to follow when playing our games. 1.

Stay in Character. (Costumes are highly recommended)

2.

Hide/Stretch the truth, but don't lie!

3.

Interrogate others.

Each game takes approximately 1-1/2 to 3 hrs, depending on the number of people playing ( + the amount of ad-libbing and role playing!)

Round 1 - Introductions Round Instructions After all of your guests have arrived, 1) read the game description aloud:

The Place: Old California. The time: 1835. Cattle Rancher Don Juan Dinero is dead. He was killed tonight. No one seems particularly upset about it. Everyone's been enjoying themselves at another one of Doña Margarita's celebrated "baile de máscaras" (masquerade balls). Everyone but the Don, that is. Tonight, while everyone was enjoying themselves dancing the fandango, someone locked him up with the prize winning bull, and well, mano a mano, el toro won. We're gathered here at La Ultima Ronda to work out who killed the Don, dead. 2) pass around (or put on display) a copy of the scene of the crime "Map of Misericordia" 3) and then have each guest introduce themselves (reading aloud in 1st person, "I") 4) Be sure everyone has seen the two additional clues: "Do" and the "Bullfighting Poster" NOTE: Your guests are to keep the Background Information to themselves for now, but are to be encouraged to perform any actions indicated and stay in character throughout the game. They can use any Background Information in the next two rounds to defend themselves if and when necessary. Some of this information may not be revealed; it depends on how many questions your guests ask each other... Rover Grange is to start this round. If playing, encourage your "extra" guests Maria Chihuahua and Mateo D'Oro to introduce themselves once the other 6 guests have done so. You should not announce they are "extra"; no one, including the guests playing those roles, should have any idea they are not essential to solving the mystery. Their performances may prove to be the most memorable of the entire event!

Round 1 Clue for Rover Grange BACKGROUND INFO/INTRODUCE YOURSELF BACKGROUND INFO -- DO NOT READ ALOUD You are mad for gold. Like a magpie, you're attracted to anything remotely looking like GOLD. Talk constantly about the legendary city of "El Dorado"... And if there's anything this hombre don't drink, it's water. Throughout the game: sip from your "whiskey" flask and speak with an outrageously strong Southern (American South) accent of which you are very proud. Don't worry about accuracy, just make it strong. READ ALOUD -- YOU ARE TO START THIS ROUND Silencio, todos! Silence everybody! Dang it all, shut up! Don Juan Dinero is dead! I found him in the plaza, locked inside with the bull. Someone had untied the beast...and well, mano a mano, El Toro won. Now, let's get down to brass tacks. I say we all introduce ourselves and then explain where we were and what we were up to tonight. Pshaw! My friend the Don is dead and someone here killed him! I'm half-horse, half-alligator--thickest hide imaginable, but I got nothing to hide. I'll tell all. I was prospecting late tonight. I was moseying on over to the dance; I planned to cut through the plaza, but forgot it was fenced in for the bear & bull fight planned for tomorrow's fiesta. Then I saw him. No, señoritas, it's not for you to see; it is not a pretty sight. He was catawamptiously chewed up. The gate was still locked. I smashed it open. The bull stood in the corner, snorting and beating the ground. He came at me like greased lighting! I saw some paper on the ground and some cigarillos, but I barely had enough time to be sure Don Juan was dead. Yes, sir. Cold as a wagon tire. If things get out of hand, call out: Order, by gobs!

This clue should be revealed to others.

Round 1 Clue for Doña Margarita INTRODUCE YOURSELF--READ THIS ALOUD SPEAK AFTER ROVER GRANGE I am Doña Margarita. Don Dinero was my husband. Dios mio! Dead? This means one of you has killed him. Whoever locked him up with the bull murdered him. Who could have done such a thing? He was the Alcalde, the minister of justice! And, worst of all, whoever killed him ruined my party! You say yourself that you were not at my party tonight, Señor Grange. You could have easily killed my husband. How can we trust the words of a filthy Yankee?! A boca de borracho, oídos de cantinero ("Don't pay attention to the loud talk of a drunk" or literally: "From the mouth of a drunk, the sounds of a bar.") This clue should be revealed to others.

Round 1 Clue for Lota Luz Blanco INTRODUCE YOURSELF--READ THIS ALOUD SPEAK AFTER DOÑA MARGARITA SPEAKS Easy now, girl...I got that bull tied up and I wrenched this out of the Don's dead hand, it says "Do". I also found this poster on the ground near his body. I've nothing to hide; I was dealing cards here tonight at La Ultima Ronda. I'm the most qualified person here to find our killer. I am the best shot west of the Sierra Nevada and a fearless rider. I've been a cook, a waitress, a nurse, an adventuress, an ox team driver, a bear trapper, a card dealer, and a bounty hunter. Yes, señores, I am a woman. I am Charlotte Le Blanc from Boston, Massachusetts. But you can call me Lota. Lota Luz Blanco. My musket, you can call her Brown Bess. Señor Zero:You can remove your mask. The masquerade party's over! This clue should be revealed to others.

Round 1 Clue for El Zero INTRODUCE YOURSELF--READ THIS ALOUD SPEAK AFTER LOTA LUZ BLANCO SPEAKS This is no costume, I assure you. Tonight I had planned to make a visit to the Alcalde, to force him to change his wicked ways. I had no idea his wife was having a party. Unfortunately I chose tonight, of all nights, to "come out" as the new "El Zero". Imagine my surprise tonight at seeing no less than five El Zeros dancing the fandango! I will not remove my mask. I am El Zero, the Californio Robin Hood. If my identity is ever revealed, I will not be able to fight against corruption! My grandfather was El Zero, my father El Zero and I am El Zero. And I for one am glad the Alcalde, Don Juan, is dead. He was corrupt and cruel. I only wish I had been the one to kill him... This clue should be revealed to others.

"-

Round 1 Clue for Padre Ernesto INTRODUCE YOURSELF--READ THIS ALOUD SPEAK AFTER EL ZERO SPEAKS Oh, Señor Zero, I cannot let you risk your mortal soul with such talk. Come and confess your sins before it is too late. I am Padre Ernesto. Since the closing of Mission Misericordia , I have been working as a parish priest in the pueblo, close to the people, my flock. I was at the dance tonight. I wouldn't have missed it for the world. (clears throat ) The young señoritas there count on my presence. I act as a chaperon. And, yes, I dance a fandango or two. I am quite light on my feet. I did not notice when the Don left the salón/the ballroom. Horrible, horrible. But I do not understand one thing: Señor Grange, what does "catawamptiously" mean? This clue should be revealed to others.
