Rotary is Service Above Self Right On Time With the bang of the gavel we pledge our great nations Flag and Jim Bowser gives us our "Thought for the Day". Citing the many important thoughts of retired UCLA Basketball Coach John Wooden, Jim announces Coach Wooden has just turned 99 years of age. Our Jim beautifully tied Coach Wooden's philosophy of enduring peace between nations and the love and consideration for others into the basic tenets of Rotary. Lindy Murrell's mom has suffered a heart attack and President Jan asks that we as her Rotary family, keep Lindy's mother and Lindy's family in our thoughts and prayers. In a new version of 'Sportscenter' Ian Jackson along with special guest John Ireland, offered updates on all local and alma mater teams. By the time you read this - many of you will have attended the Salvation Army's luncheon on October 21. Rotarians have helped 'God's Army' deliver over one million Meals On Wheels.

Birthdays, Anniversaries Jan Buike, Russ Samuels ('I love running the Hamburger Booth'), John Van den Akker, and Randall ('I just love Hamburgers') Meadors all celebrated Birthdays. Herb and Nancy Trachtenberg celebrated 39 blissful years of marriage. Roger and Joanna Rombro also celebrated their nuptials along with Scott and Maria Ferguson (2 years!). John Nyland has been a 'smooth-skinned' Rotarian for 23 years and President Jan recognized Dave Hornbecker for his 26 "Banner" years as a member of our club. But wait...then we learn Bill Becker is celebrating 27 years!

Attention and Congratulations! Attention and congratulations! Larry Johnson held the District Membership Seminar at the Marriott. "We hear our own Kathleen Terry "STOLE the show"! Word has it she accepted an award for significantly helping insure new members are found, initiated, then join our Club. When our President showed up for her first meeting, she discovered most of our equipment was missing. Vowing to protect our valuables, she thanked Sgt. at Arms Robin Thormodsgaard for taking on a new task in insuring our Club Podium was set-up and returned safely with our "newly replaced contents" intact.

DOGGED DETERMINATION Ron Sokol, Attorney (310) 546 8124

Rotary is Service Above Self Sandpipers’ Botique and Holiday Basket Time Jim Hunter introduced Andrea McColloch, Sandpipers Holiday Basket Chair. Andrea reminded us how to make, load and deliver the Sandpiper organization's much needed and appreciated holiday baskets. She noted the massive amount of friendly Rotarians who greeted her at the door this morning. She knows that an equal number will volunteer to help her and the "Pipers" again this year. Baskets will be delivered to 100 families in need and during the toughest time of the year. The dates are Dec. 12 (same day as our Holiday Party) and Dec. 13. Please sign up now to prepare, assemble, load, and deliver the baskets. You can also sign up to pay for a Holiday Basket that is customized for a family in need. Every year, thanks to Jim Hunter and Joanne Hunter.. Rotary Moments ABOUND!

Blue Badge Jim Hunter remains to help give Vinny Fazzino a badge he more than earned. Vinny pays $20 for the privilege! With his sponsor Donn Ennis standing by his side, our President points out that "remember, it's not what you have to GET, it's what you have to GIVE." New Member Induction: Next up, the induction of Alex Yoffe into the MB Rotary, sponsored by Arturo Di Pietro. As the induction winds down and the Red Badge is given, banter between Membership Chair and the President produces another $20.00 from our newest Rotarian!

A Boradcaster of Sports Bill Keenan introduced John Ireland, the KCAL-TV Sports Reporter and ESPN Radio announcer, who spoke about life, the Lakers and all things sports. John's day job? KCAL-TV following the Lakers. John works at Staples Center in the evenings. He has us on pins and needles... as he tells the story of how he 'almost lost his job'. Those in attendance now know and fully understand the tie-in and the good deed performed by Justin Timberlake and Janet Jackson during halftime at the Super Bowl. It ALL relates to KCAL and CBS' ability to dodge fines from the FCC. It was an event that combined multiple 'F-Bombs', FCC 'Fines', a 7 footer, an alleged 350 pound 'Shaq', and Raptors from Canada . . . all on a sacred Sunday Morning in early 2000. Then there's the part about how Ron Artest could either donate $1 million dollars

Rotary is Service Above Self OR walk into our Monday Morning Rotary Club meeting completely naked, 'in a hat made out of noodles'? As they say - you had to be there. It promises to be an exciting season - and John 'set the table' beautifully for us to enjoy it. He answered multiple sports questions and forecasted the demise of the Dodgers. Pay attention to this man, watch KCAL and listen to him on ESPN. To paraphrase our current Governor.. "He'll be back." Stay tuned for visit #2!

An Expert in Safety George Butts is then introduced by Vocational Director, Richard Ackerman. CERT is Richard's passion and George Butts is the President of the CERT Team (Community Emergency Response Team). What do you do in case of disaster? George re-created CERT about 4 years ago. He's a pilot, an inventor, and enjoys his fine wine. George started his CERT presentation with two compelling videos one about staying focused and 'knowing your surroundings'. Both could have included 'parental warnings' and been shown on one of the Fox Reality Channels under 'Worlds Most Shocking Videos'. Although shocking - both made the point! Keep your cool in a disaster, be prepared, keep 'breathing' and look around you to assess various danger 'zones'. Richard handed George $1000.00 and is exploring having a special training just for the Rotary Club of Manhattan Beach Rotarians. Imagine how much good we could do together, if there were a community disaster! Explaining the various scenarios in which CERT would be called, how they supplement our professional safety employees in the event of major disasters, was also discussed. The training is professional, George runs the local program and works with both of our member Police Chief Rob Uyeda and Fire Chief Scott Ferguson. There are 175 CERT members now. We'd like to increase that number... look for the Sign -Up Sheet at the Directors Table and SIGN UP. Raffle: Chocolate - the hot kind - goes to Charlie Steinmetz and more than $400 does NOT go to Tim James. That's the way I heard it, Bill Keenan

Rotary is Service Above Self Attendance & Make-ups Attendance is an important part of our commitment to Rotary. Our secretary, Lindy Murrell, regularly files attendance reports with District 5280, and each club's attendance record is reported district-wide. Let's help June keep that attendance record high--report your makeup to her. (And, of course, do the make-ups in the first place!) What is a make-up? Board meetings, for one--you are always welcome even if you're not a Board member, and it's a fun evening to boot! Other clubs are also a make-up. So are many of our projects. So make June's job easier--when you do a make-up, tell her. If you're not sure it's a make-up--hey, tell her anyway!
