A LEGENDARY COLLECTION OF THE MACALLAN FINE & RARE AND ADDITIONAL RARE VINTAGE SCOTCH (LOTS 1345-1383) It is with great pride that Zachys presents the single greatest collection of The Macallan Fine & Rare ever brought to auction. To say that this is a once-in-a-lifetime collection is an understatement as many of these bottles are not currently available anywhere in North America and most of them have never been seen at auction. The focal point is a collection of the initial offering of The Macallan Fine & Rare first released in 2002. With the exception of 1926, all other vintages from this initial release are represented in the following twenty-six lots. Each one of these bottles is extremely rare, with production in some vintages barely cracking the hundreds and some only in double digits. These bottles of Fine & Rare were meticulously procured over several months in 2008 from a single retail store in Canada. The entire inventory for the store was acquired directly from The Macallan and was one of only two sets of this collection brought into the country. The acquisition of these bottles by a single collector was impressive enough to garner a handwritten thank you note from David Cox, Director of Fine and Rare Whiskies at The Macallan. The collection doesn’t stop there! Also on offer from The Macallan is the 50 Year Old in Lalique, one of only 470 bottles produced, as well as the Fine Oak 30 Year Old Masters Of Photography Series “Rankin.” Hailing from the venerable Bowmore distillery are the three bottles that comprise the Bowmore Trilogy (Black, Gold & White), together at Lot 1376. We close out this collection with impressive fifty year old gems: Auchentoshan 50 Year Old Cask 480 distilled in 1957, Dalmore 50 Year Old Single Malt in crystal decanter, and Glenfarclas 50 Year Old distilled in 1955. The bottles in the following lots represent a Scotch lover’s dream and it is with a heavy heart that this consignor has decided to part with his prized collection. Over several years, this gentleman acquired these bottles one at a time and took great pains to store them all in pristine condition. Given the extravagance of the packaging for some of these bottles, no expense was spared in the protection, maintenance, and transportation of these precious bottles. They are beyond a doubt perfect. Stu Jakub

“We see The Macallan Fine & Rare Vintage Collection as the apogee of The Macallan’s illustrious ancestry – a liquid expression of the excellence, refinement, and style that have become the hallmark of the brand.” David Cox, Director, The Macallan Fine & Rare

Q & A With David Cox, Director, THE MACALLAN FINE & RARE How did you come to work for The Macallan? I started working full time in the whisky business in 1982, after seven years in Asia Pacific and southern Africa. After some years with United Distillers in London, I moved to Scotland to work on The Famous Grouse and Highland Park in North America, before becoming marketing controller of The Macallan in 1998. I have been with the brand ever since. When you choose a barrel of whisky for The Fine And Rare series, what qualities do you look for? A combination of outstanding character (aroma and taste) and in the older casks, a style redolent of Macallan produced in earlier years when differences in raw materials, fermentation times, and firing of the stills would have resulted in differences in style from modern day Macallan. Should a consumer expect The Macallan Fine And Rare bottled at thirty years of age (such as the 1971) to have similarities to the regular thirty year Macallan? Similar maybe in terms of “weight,” mouthfeel, and fullness of taste but not necessarily in terms of specific aromas and tastes, as much will have depended on the selection of casks assembled for the particular vatting. Over time, has the mash bill used by The Macallan shifted to match current tastes? The Macallan doesn’t introduce production changes to try and match “current tastes.” In the case of the mash bill, The Macallan uses a combination of the mainstream industry barley and a variety grown exclusively for The Macallan in Scotland and Northumberland which helps to gives the oiliness and viscosity characteristic of The Macallan’s new make spirit. The Macallan stays faithful to those production elements which give the maturing spirit its distinctive character and great quality. For each label, there were a limited number of bottles produced. Does the distillery retain any more for sale in the future, or have all the bottles been sold? Not all bottles have been, or will be sold. Some will be retained for the distillery’s own archive, others for use at Easter Elchies House, the home of The Macallan. Using the 1971 vintage as an example, there were sixty-four bottle equivalents produced from one cask, and 128 bottle equivalents produced from a second cask. However, the alcohol levels are distinctly different. To what would you attribute the difference in amount of bottles produced and ABV percentage? Every cask is different, in terms of wood structure and rates of evaporation and extraction. Together with the influence of environmental conditions, such as temperature and humidity, all these fundamental factors will cause differences in the character of the final whisky drawn from the cask, and in its strength.

214

The 1946 vintage appears to be the only bottling in this series that was produced from married casks. Every other vintage comes from either a single cask or two separate bottlings. What was the motivation for blending from two casks in this instance? In the judgment of the Whisky Maker back in 2001/2002, there were insufficient differences in character between the two to justify two separate cask bottlings, thus the vatting of the casks to produce the one vintage expression. How are you handling the increased demand for The Macallan Fine & Rare from around the globe? The market really finds its own level, knowing that these releases are rare and won’t be repeated. Any restriction of supply automatically leads to market adjustments in terms of availability, price, etc.. Is there potential for future releases of any year past or present? We try to release a new vintage each year where we have a cask, or casks, of sufficiently outstanding quality. We began with thirtyseven individual vintage releases in 2002; there are now fifty. In some years we haven’t had stocks left and sometimes the releases don’t always follow a chronological order, depending on stock drawdown for different releases at different times. At the moment for example, our Whisky Maker is looking at a possible new vintage release from the mid 1980s, whereas last year’s release was from 1990. However we will not be introducing new releases from years which currently exist. What do you think has changed within the last decade that has led to an increased demand for and popularity of fine whisky? It’s a relatively new field for investors and collectors, with more obviously limited stocks and bottlings than are general in the world of wine, excepting the very top chateaux and domaines. Prices and availability have responded accordingly over the last few years. What is your favorite accompaniment to The Macallan 50 Year Old? Good company! While all the bottlings are of undoubtedly high quality, do you have one or two that are your personal favorites? 1953; Queen Elizabeth was crowned, Everest was scaled and, unremarked in the world’s media, I was born!
