A Journey to the Heart of Man

Centre International de l’Art Pariétal

Lascaux, developed and managed by

Semitour

The International Centre for Cave Art of Montignac-Lascaux The journey begins...

At last Lascaux reveals all its art, and much more...

Dordogne-Perigord, a region that will continue to surprise you.

For the first time, Lascaux appears in its entirety. An unprecedented complete replica retraces the discovery of this famous decorated cave. But the adventure doesn’t stop there: 4 exhibition halls investigate the place occupied by Lascaux in world cave art and its relation to contemporary creation. The opening of the International Centre for Cave Art in 2016 marks the beginning of a new adventure combining the emotion of our ancestors’ art and technological prowess.

Famous for the wealth of its cultural and natural heritage as well as the delicacies of its gastronomy, the Dordogne is one of France’s main tourist destinations. It owes its position as a land of prehistory to the renown of exceptional sites such as Lascaux. But it also offers evidence of continuous human presence for almost 450,000 years.

The tour comprises 6 different stages:

4

1 First the vast panorama seen from the belvedere gives a sense of the geographical context of Lascaux. This landscaped pathway, like an open-air gallery, is designed to place the public in conditions close to those experienced by the discoverers of the cave in 1940. The space is scripted (atmosphere, narration) in order to prepare the visitor for the exploration of the replica.

2

The International Centre for Cave Art next proposes different fields of knowledge to the visitor. The Theatre of Cave Art recounts the work of pre-historians from the 19th century to the present day and analyses the central role played by Lascaux in this evolution.

5 Relief plays an integral part in cave art. Explore Lascaux cave in its smallest details with 3D films and compare these paintings with the masterpieces of world cave art.

The atmosphere Inside the replica is identical to Lascaux cave. This part is above all devoted to the contemplation of the paintings and engravings.

3

Finally, an imaginary gallery invites visitors to explore

6 the connections between cave art, modern and contemporary art before giving voice to an artist in the temporary exhibition area.

The next part features an educational approach to understanding Lascaux relying strongly on digital technology. The cave comes apart before your eyes to reveal all its secrets.

Lascaux’s tourist facilities extend over 3 sites: International Centre for Cave Art, Lascaux II and le Parc du Thot. The whole forms a worldwide standard for cave art and evidence of traces left by a singularly moving vision of the beginnings of humanity. Question the place of man in the world surrounding him.

2012 Beginning of the tour Lascaux, the International Exhibition This monumental exhibition is the first touring cave replica. At the time, the point was to hand over to the people of today, 17 000 years old messages thanks to a technological achievement and a scientific approach. The two galleries reproduced are “The Bulls Hall” and the “Axial Recess” showing 90% of the paintings of the original cave. Horses, aurochs, bisons, stags, ibexes and bears will testimony of the magdaleniens knowledge of their environment.
