A House of Prayer for All People I

B y J o h n D i xo n Spanish but now is about 65 percent Spanish. In one year alone, 100,000 Ecuadorans have come to Madrid. Every day five planeloads of Colombians arrive. There are thousands of Romanians, Poles, Russians, Africans and Moroccans. They often come destitute with only the clothes on their backs. Even though many are highly educated, they are forced to take the low paying jobs no one else wants. The needs are overwhelming. Last year our church passed out 2,000 pounds of food. The great joy of all of this is seeing God forming a House of Prayer for All Nations. Anthony from Nigeria prays with a tremendous fervor and Olga says the glory hallelujah in Ukrainian. What a privilege to have a living preview of Revelation chapter seven in our own church.

n 1987 when my wife, Ninfa, and I were called as missionaries to the Spanish Episcopal Church little did we know that the Lord would have us plant a church that would be a “house of prayer for all nations (Isaiah 56:7).” We should have had some inkling when our first baptism was a young man from the central African nation of Gabon. Felix was studying at the University of Madrid and living in Móstoles near us because it was cheaper. His village in Gabon had no Christian church and he knew nothing about Christ. A professor from the Ivory Coast at the University of Madrid witnessed to him about the Lord. After Felix entered our fellowship, a constant stream of people from all over the world came to our church. I have counted people from 31 countries touched by this ministry. Most Sundays, at least 10 to 15 countries are represented in the congregation. Our congregation used to be 85 percent

April 20-26 Pray for the New Wineskins For Global Missions conference at Ridgecrest, North Carolina. Pray for the over 1,000 Episcopalians that will be attending this event. Ask God to continue to awaken the Episcopal Church to the Great Commission. Pray for Jessamy as she attends university. Ask the Lord to protect Justin, Francis and his wife, Audra, all serving in the Armed Forces. In Punta Gorda, Belize, ask God to guide and protect Jena Brodhead as she works among the impoverished and indigenous people.

April 27- May 3 Pray for John, Susan, Robert and James Park in San Pedro Sula, Honduras, as they prepare for Home Ministry Assignment this summer. Pray for the boys to have a good high school experience in the Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, area where the family will be staying while visiting supporters and churches.

Pray for children’s ministries in Chile.

Pray for Caroline Humphrey in Azua, Dominican Republic, that she will be able to listen to God as she settles into her new home and ministry.

Pray for Judi McCullough in Tampa, Florida, as she discerns the next steps for missionary service. Give thanks for her home church, Church of the Nativity and for her grown daughters, Jeanette and Lynn and their support. Ask God to guide her as she seeks ministry partners.

Ask God to renew the strength of Sharon McCririe in Asunción, Paraguay. Ask for guidance for the Anglican Church that it may minister healing and liberation to those held captive to drugs. Pray for continued commitment to Jesus Christ for leaders and pastors in the Anglican Church there.

With joy SAMS announces David and Alice Johnson, Sue and Roger Lutz, Shawn Grainger, and Lynda Witzky as candidates for missionary service. David, a pediatrician and Alice, a lactation counselor, are from St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Burnsville, NC. They look forward to a ministry in community health development. Sue and Roger are sent by St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Akron, OH. They will be ministering in the Diocese of Bolivia where Sue will be a special education teacher and Roger will be assisting with Alpha and church development. Shawn is a Latin American specialist as well as a youth leader from Church of the Apostles in Fairfax, VA. She feels called to youth ministry in Latin America. Lynda hopes to serve in a teaching or helping ministry. She is a member of Christ Episcopal Church, Plano, TX.

SAMS FORMER CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD GOES HOME TO THE LORD SAMS mourns the death of Bill Elmore, SAMS chairman of the board from 1989-92. Bill provided leadership during those years helping to bring SAMS into a period of sustained growth as well as strategic initiatives. He was beloved by the Society for his kind, caring manner and sterling Christian character. Bill served in the Navy during World War II. He worked in business for twenty years before entering Columbia Law School. Upon graduation he served as a law clerk for Warren E. Burger, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. After a successful law career he moved to Charleston, SC, where he served as the Deputy of Administration for the Episcopal Diocese of South Carolina. Bill is survived by his wife, Harriette, and four children.
