Initial Screen Moviemaker can be loaded by clicking on start and selecting the program from the program listings. The opening screen should appear as below:

Task bar – lists the stages in creating a movie.

Storyboard – clips, transitions etc. are dragged here to create the movie.

Preview screen allows clips to be viewed or the whole movie

Captured video clips will appear here.

Capturing video from a DV camcorder

To start the process select ‘capture from video device’

All the video capture devices connected to the computer will be listed here.

The video capture wizard will appear.

1. Select the capture device you wish to use.

2. Select ‘next’ after choosing the capture device.

Enter a file name here. Normally you would not make any changes here. File will be saved to the default directory ‘My Videos’

There are two methods of capturing the video - automatic and manual. This page describes the automatic method. Capture Method dialogue box

Start capture when you have found the start of the section, stop capture at the end of the section. Then use the camera controls to move to a new section. Select ‘next’ after choosing capture method.

Camera controls allow you to view the video stored on the camera and select the section you wish to capture.

Capturing video from VCRs This requires a special unit which connects the VCR to the computer, several firms make them e.g. Belkin and Terratec. They cost between £40 and £80. The dialogue boxes are identical to those for the web cam. There is one exception – in the video capture device dialogue box two key selections have to be made – see below.

The audio device must be set to the computers sound card if the audio connection is directly from the VCR to the computer.

Choose a clip by first selecting it and then dragging to the story board. Repeat until all the clips you require are in the correct sequence.

2. From the clip menu select split. The clip will be split into two components. Position in the clip is also shown in the preview window. 1. Move the playback indicator to the point in the clip at which you want to split it.

Editing the video clips – Trimming clips Can be used to remove unwanted material from the beginning and end of a clip. Used with splitting a clip, it allows unwanted material to be removed anywhere in a clip.

2. Moving the trim handles allows the start and end of the video clip to be trimmed. Playing back the clip in the preview window shows the result. 1. Select the clip first by clicking on it.

2. Select a transition. 1. Select view video transitions.

3. Drag the transition to the storyboard.

1. Select view video effects.

2. Select an effect.

3. Drag the effect to the video click on the timeline.

Saving the project This saves all the changes made to the video clips on the timeline. This means you can load the project and continue to work on the video clips or make changes even though you may have created a final movie file.

Making the movie – the final stage 1 Finish movie provides you with several options for saving the movie file. The next page shows the dialogue boxes that open when you choose a save option.

This only works if you have a video hosting provider.
