A great Australian rarity… STRUCK EXACTLY 200 YEARS AGO! Struck exactly two centuries ago, the 1813 New South Wales Silver Dump is one of Australia’s highest profile rarities. Known by less than 1,000 examples, and always the subject of hot competition, demand for this iconic 200-year-old coin is certain to attain unprecedented heights during the bicentenary year. An outstanding opportunity to own one of the first two coin types struck in Australia, this superb Silver Dump was one of just 40,000 punched from the centre of 40,000 Spanish Silver Dollars procured in 1812. Part of a clever attempt by Governor Lachlan Macquarie to keep currency in the young colony, the Dump and the outer ring of the restruck Spanish silver, the famous Holey Dollar, were the lifeblood of the economy until the 1820s. When legal tender status was withdrawn in 1829, however, virtually all were swapped for British currency or melted for the silver. An extremely rare, deeply historic coin, it is thought that less than 1,000 Silver Dumps exist ttoday, with some putting the figure as low as 800. With astute investors joining passionate collectors for the right to be the W proud owner of this iconic rarity, and with demand sure to soar in 2013, the p chance to secure the 1813 Silver Dump in better-than-usually-seen good c Fine must not be missed. Complete with a Certificate of Authenticity. F

Life at Sea…

Struck as the Fleet set sail! Struck in the year that the First Fleet set sail from England, the 1787 Silver Shilling and Sixpence are not only of huge historical significance – they are truly beautiful coins. Admired for the beauty of the George III portrait and the armorial magnificence of the reverse, these Proclamation Era silver coins circulated extensively in the new colony in the 1790s and early 1800s. 1 With W Britain experiencing silver shortages as a result of s turmoil across Europe, silver t coins of the late 18th century c were not struck in great number w and are consequently scarce. Notwithstanding this, the 1787 Not Shilling and Sixpence both made it Sh to t Australian shores, and played a key part in the embryonic colonial economy. Graded Very Fine, and surprisingly affordable! F

Life for those aboard the ships of the First Fleet was no doubt tough, but it could have been much worse. Cognisant of the fact that poor health would undermine the new colony, Phillip made every effort to keep the convicts in good health, placing great emphasis upon clothing, exercise and cleanliness. Importantly, every effort was made to provide fresh food whenever possible, in a bid to minimise scurvy, and Phillip also managed to secure an extra ship to reduce crowding. The good weather enjoyed on the first leg of the voyage helped this cause, with convicts allowed on deck, and fresh water, vegetables and meat were procured on the Fleet’s first stop, in early June at Tenerife. The pleasant weather dissipated as the Fleet sailed through the tropics, with vermin and parasites proving a nightmare for the convicts, marines and crew. Several convicts fell sick and died, and tropical downpours reduced the opportunity for exercise. Thankfully, the Fleet reached Rio de Janeiro in early August, where the ships were cleaned and repaired, and fresh water and large quantities of food procured for the next leg of the voyage. Some of the convicts’ lice-infested clothing was burnt, and new outfits issued, as Phillip sought to maintain the health of all aboard the Fleet. The last port of call, the Cape of Good Hope in South Africa saw the further procurement of fresh meat, bread and vegetables to strengthen the convicts for the final leg of the voyage.

First Fleet FIFTY! Undoubtedly the most popular issue in the RAM’s 1966-2013 Mint Set Series, with collector and non-collector alike clamouring to own an official keepsake of Australia’s bicentennial year, the 1988 Mint Set is highly sought after for the magnificent First Fleet 50c. Also so highlighted by the long-gone 1c & 2c, c, the ‘not-issued-for-circulation’ 1988 20c,, the FIRST Australian $2 date AND the e Bicentennial Roos $1 commemorative, this important, distinctive 8-coin set is housed in the original pack of issue. p

Although ill-discipline and attempted mutinies naturally created problems whilst at sea, the survival rate of the First Fleet is powerful testimony to the effectiveness of Phillip’s enlightened approach. The eleven vessels had carried nearly 1,500 convicts, soldiers and crew 24,000km over 252 days with the loss of only 48 people.

A leap into the past… Defined, as always, by the Royal Australian Mint’s traditional fusion of pure .999 silver, official presentation packaging and excellent value-formoney, the two new 2013 Silver Kangaroo coins are also united by an historic, one-year-only reverse design. A fascinating exploration of Australia’s colonial past, these official Australian legal tender coins revive one of the first non-indigenous portrayals of the kangaroo. Unquestionably among the most prestigious precious metal issues of the year, the 2013 $100 Tasmanian Devil 1oz Gold Proof has inspired overwhelming demand. Indeed, the strike-to-order 150-coin mintage is on the cusp of a complete sell-out! Struck from a massive ONE TROY OUNCE of .9999 fine gold by Swiss precious metal experts Produits Artistiques Metaux Precieux (PAMP), the expansive 38.61mm diameter flan of this spellbinding legal tender commemorative is distinguished by an utterly unique full-colour reverse design. Capturing the power and ferocity of this

tough carnivorous beast – as well as its notoriously raucous nature – the glorious full-colour design has been created in fully struck-up relief, and contrasts beautifully against the skillfully sculpted appreciation of the Tasmanian bush. In keeping with the fervent interest in its predecessors – celebrating the Tasmanian Tiger and Tasmanian Wedge-tailed Eagle – demand for this large, distinctive 1oz Gold Proof has been predictably strong. The strike-to-order mintage will be officially closed on the 31st of January, but with just a few coins remaining, the 150-coin limited edition won’t last that long.

Pair of Kings! Edward VII Copper currency – the early years…

Although Australia’s ia’s s first first currency c rrenc was as issued in 1910, the first halfpennies and pennies were not struck until 1911 – the year of the Coronation of George V. Small mintages were the rule for this period, and with the lowest denomination coins experiencing the greatest circulation, a tiny percentage of George V 1/2d & 1d coins have survived in collectable condition – making the 1911-36 1/2d & 1d sets tough to assemble. A crucial slice of Australia’s early history as a nation, the 1911-36 1/2d & 1d set

comprises 55 coin coins. Littered with a range c coins ge of scarce, key dates, and including all the mintmark varieties, the 1/2d set features Australia’s first 1/2d (1911), low-mintage 1914 and 1914H, scarce 1915H, sought after 1918 and scarce Depression Era 1930 & 1931 dates. Hotly pursued, the George V 1d Set is highlighted by the low-mintage 1914, 1915 and 1915H, scarce 1920, as well as Australia’s second lowest mintage 1d, the celebrated 1925. 2,500-year-old Greek Gorgon Silver! One of the world’s most distinctive Ancient coin types, distinguished by the instantly recognisable reverse design of the monstrous Gorgon with its tongue protruding, we are delighted to have secured a small batch of 2,500-year-old Ancient Greek Silver Three Quarter Drachms! The first time we have offered this celebrated Ancient Greek coin type to our clients, the Gorgon Silver Three Quarter Drachm was struck for the city of Parion, a city founded in 710BC in what is now Turkey. Choosing the Gorgon as its official emblem, Parion tapped into one of the key tales of Ancient Greek mythology – the story of the infamous snake-haired Gorgon Medusa and her two sisters. At the time of Ancient Greece, the Gorgon was the most popular image employed as a device to ward off evil. Known as a Gorgoneion, the hideous visage of the Gorgon adorned the coins of Parion for several hundred years. Issued toward the end of the archaic period, approximately 480BC, the few 12mm-15mm Parion Silver Three Quarter A$ Drachms we have in stock all feature the Gorgon obverse design, with the reverse featuring a cruciform incuse MYSIA PARION C.480BC square. A wonderful opportunity for you to hold the GORGON SILVER THREE-QUARTER DRACHM FINE history of Ancient Greece in your hands, this fascinating 2,500-year-old coin type is astonishingly good value-forAU326 money at just A$149.

Struck before the Birth of Christ... Struck more than 2,000 years ago, the large, imposing Roman Silver Cistophoric Tetradrachms we have available are notable for scarcity, beauty and, perhaps most of all, magnificent ‘As Struck’ quality! A particularly large coin, the imposing 27mm, 12 gram Silver Cistophoric Tetradrachm originated in Pergamum – a city that, by late Hellenistic times, was considered one of the greatest cultural centres of the Ancient Greek world. The expanding Roman Republic took control of Pergamum (and the neighbouring city of Ephesus) during the 2nd century BC, with the area becoming the Roman province of Asia. Taking its name from the sacred chest of the cult of Dionysus, the cista mystica – the basket of snakes used during the mysterious cult’s initiation rites – the Silver Tetradrachm features elaborate designs on both reverse and obverse. During Roman times, the type was officially issued by a Roman ‘quaestor’ (magistrate in charge of finance) and although we cannot be certain of the identity of the quaestor that authorised the Silver Cistophori in stock, it may well have been the brother of the legendary Mark Antony, Lucius Antony, who served as Quaestor in the 60s and 50s BC! A$ A coin of intriguing aesthetic appeal, and PERGAMUM 133-56BC considered very scarce today, the 133-56BC SILVER CISTOPHORUS gVF-EF Silver Cistophori we have in stock are all in AT077 gVF-EF condition!
