A letter from the president and chairman Susan Stockton, president and Kathi Seifert, chairman

Dear friends in the community, As the Fox Cities Performing Arts Center’s 2006/07 season — our most exciting and successful season to date — came to a close, we continued to be amazed, inspired and deeply moved by the enthusiasm the community and region has both for the Center and for the wide variety of artists and performances we strive to bring to northeast Wisconsin. Your Fox Cities Performing Arts Center serves as a gathering place where community members young and old can share an experience that sparks an emotional connection. In this Report to the Community, we review and celebrate some of the memorable events and milestones from our 2006/07 season. The financial support from individuals, businesses and foundations ensures that the Center remains a premier venue for the arts in the region and a nonprofit that continues to fulfill its mission.

Thank you to our partners and patrons. We look forward to sharing our upcoming fifth anniversary season with you!

Connecting the Community

“Our December ceremony at the P.A.C. is truly an amazing event! The presentation of our graduates on the stage is breathtaking, and the facilities are superb.”

— Barb Dreger, director, marketing & student recruitment, Fox Valley Technical College

The Fox Cities Performing Arts Center is the community’s place to gather, connect and share experiences. Whether it’s a performance in Thrivent Financial Hall or a meeting in the Founders Room, the Center prides itself on bringing people together. In the 2006/07 season, the Center hosted 159 community use events, including meetings, proms, graduations, weddings, family reunions and more. The Center is a popular venue for fundraisers like Soup’s On for the Outagamie

Chapter of the American Red Cross, ThedaCare Follies and B.A.B.E.S. Mystery Dinner, along with important community events like P.A.R.T.Y at the P.A.C., aiming to prevent alcohol and risk-related trauma in youth. The Center presents the Arts Alive! series, which is a window to the world that featured diverse cultural performances such as Ballet Folklorico de Mexico, Tiempo Libre and the Hamburg Symphony in the 2006/07 season. The Center also brings northeast Wisconsin

“It was all our dancers talked about for weeks after the event. I had one dancer say, ‘This was the best day of my life!’ ”

— Maeghan Johnson, Studio Y Dance Program, about the dance class led by cast members of Mamma Mia!

Taking in a show at the Center involves much more than just the show itself. The audience can connect to a performance like never before through a wide variety of community engagement activities which include preshow discussions, Q-and-A sessions, workshops, lobby displays, demonstrations and more. Fifty-six percent of Center-presented events in the 2006/07 season included a community engagement activity. Community engagement activities aren’t limited to the Center alone. Events featured throughout the community

included an ABBArobics-inspired dance class led by two cast members of Mamma Mia! during Appleton YMCA’s Arts Week. Grammy® nominated jazz artist Nnenna Freelon encouraged new mothers to sing to their infants in a ‘Babysong’ workshop at the ThedaCare Child Learning Center and spoke with jazz students at Lawrence University. The Soweto Gospel Choir held vocal workshops at St. Peter Lutheran School and Appleton Alliance Church. The members of Tiempo Libre worked with percussion students at Lawrence University.

The Center strives to be a partner in the community, and collaborates with other nonprofit organizations to foster a sense of community engagement and pride. One such partnership is Shakespeare on the Fox, which marked its third season and brought communities of the Fox River Valley together through the works of the bard. Featured performances included American Players Theatre’s performances of Trial of the Happy Dagger Company at the Oshkosh Grand Opera House and Romeo and Juliet at the Center, and Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet performed by the Fox Valley

“My 6-month-old son and I really enjoyed Nnenna Freelon’s ‘Babysong’ workshop. The information she provided regarding the benefits of singing to your children was not new to me, but it was good to hear her perspective. She is a great presenter and has a beautiful voice.” - Angie Corso Symphony. APT also participated in a workshop with the Rawhide Boys Ranch and worked with students at UW Oshkosh and area high schools. The consortium prepared to bring London’s acclaimed AandBC Theatre Company to Wisconsin in 2007/08. Partner organizations in 2006/07 included the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh, the Fox Cities Performing Arts Center, the Oshkosh Grand Opera House and the Fox Valley Symphony.

Community Contributions

“Thank you for being such a great venue and providing so many wonderful educational and enriching opportunities for students from Renaissance and around the Fox Valley. Thank you, also, for bringing us Classical Savion!”

As a nonprofit organization, the Center relies on contributions from the community to continue bringing the finest cultural and educational programming to northeast Wisconsin and to engage the community in the arts. The Center was created to enhance the quality of life in the Fox Cities and its mission has been recognized and celebrated through the financial support it has received. The Center was awarded a number of grants from local, state and federal institutions during the 2006/07 season which recognized the power and importance of the live performing arts in our community. These grants helped fund the education and Arts Alive! series, subsidize tickets prices and ensure that these culturally rich performances will be enjoyed for years to come.

— Student Spencer Wentland

The Center focused on maintaining a lean and efficient operation in the 2006/07 season. While fixed overhead costs – such as utilities – naturally went up with the market, the Center was able to keep fixed overhead expenses flat. The Center also beat its operational budget by nearly 10 percent in the 2006/07 season by keeping costs down and continuing in its successful fundraising efforts.

2006/07 Gross Annual Operating Budget*

Annual Partners through 2007

13% Contributed Income

87% Earned Revenue

* On a four year average, the Center’s contributed income is 25 percent of the gross annual operating budget. The long sitdown of a production (such as Disney’s The Lion King in 2006/07) has a dramatic impact on the ratio of an average year.

Four strong revenue pillars are the base of the Center’s financial plan including earned revenue from ticket sales and concessions, annual contributions that help maintain the state-of-the-art facility and subsidize missionbased events, the Future Fund which will ensure the Center fulfills its mission now and for future generations and a cash reserve that provides money for short-term needs. According to the most recent survey conducted by the Association for Performing Arts Presenters, the national average of contributed income to performing arts centers is 55 percent. The Center’s contributed income in the 2006/07 season was 13 percent. The Center’s Annual Partner campaign, which helps sustain the operations of the Center and funds mission-based activities and events, grew to 703 members in 2006/07.

The Arts Mean Business

“The Bureau has always relied on the P.A.C. to help us attract visitors, but it has become increasingly important to the work we do. With its ability to secure high profile shows like Disney’s The Lion King and Wicked, we feel confident the P.A.C. will continue to help us grow the economy of the Fox Cities.”

— Lynn Peters, executive director, Fox Cities Convention & Visitors Bureau

The Center participated in an economic impact survey done by the Americans for the Arts, the nation’s leading nonprofit organization for advancing the arts. Northeast Wisconsin was one of 156 communities that took part in Arts and Economic Prosperity III, the most comprehensive study of its kind ever conducted. By using the calculator in this study, the Fox Cities Performing Arts Center generates an annual average of $14.27 million in economic activity, including an average of

$1.76 million in state and local tax revenues. This economic impact study sends a strong signal that when the public supports the arts, not only is the quality of life enhanced, but it’s an investment in northeast Wisconsin’s economic well-being. The nonprofit arts and culture industry is an economically sound investment as it attracts audiences, spurs business development, supports jobs and generates government revenue.

The arts also add to the overall ecology of the community. Arts organizations like the Center foster community pride, make a cultural, educational and social impact in the community, and contribute to the community’s economic vitality. Strong economic vitality leads to philanthropy that benefits all sorts of nonprofit organizations and worthwhile causes. A community like the Fox Cities that welcomes and develops creativity and collaboration while giving back to others makes it a community that all are proud to call home.

“You always know when there is an event going on at the P.A.C. as the downtown streets and businesses are just bustling with activity. The P.A.C. is a huge draw to downtown Appleton. Downtown is impressed with the impact the cast and crew from each production has had on the businesses. They shop, dine and take advantage of services all within the downtown district.”

©Ken Cobb

By taking a deeper look at one aspect of the P.A.C.’s activity, Broadway proves to be good for the local economy as well. The most recent Economic Impact of Touring Broadway survey conducted by The League of American Theatres and Producers, Inc. in the 2004/05 season focused on the economic impact that touring Broadway has on a community. The study measured what Broadway shows spend in the market they are playing through such things as labor, advertising, housing, food, etc. The study also measured audience spending on such things as restaurants, hotels, gas and other entertainment. The study revealed that for every dollar spent on a show ticket, nearly two dollars in economic impact was generated locally, and touring Broadway productions in the Fox Cities generate nearly $8 million.

A Roaring Success

The Wisconsin premiere of Disney’s The Lion King was the most successful and longest engagement of a Broadway show at the Center, selling out its six-week run. There were over a dozen community engagement activities held in conjunction with The Lion King, including puppet demonstrations, Kids’ Day craft projects and karaoke, and a maskmaking and storytelling workshop at the Appleton Art Center featuring cast member Geno Segers (Mufasa).

to help support the Center’s mission-based activities and events including community engagement activities, Arts Alive! and education programming and more. Local businesses commissioned 50 lions and 21 cubs thoughtfully created by area artists. These lions and cubs were proudly displayed throughout the Fox Cities during a five-month exhibition period and proceeds from the lions sold at the Evening on Safari auction and in online auctions went to help the Center fulfill its mission.

The Lion King Extravaganza activities, including the Evening on Safari gala event and the popular public art project Lions of the Valley, raised over $100,000

Disney’s The Lion King was a highlight of the Center’s M&I Bank Broadway Across America – Fox Cities series, which brings the hottest touring productions to

northeast Wisconsin. The Center’s Season Ticket Holder renewal rate for 2006/07 was 83 percent, much higher than markets twice the size of the Fox Cities, proving the enthusiasm and the commitment the community has for the Center and the Broadway series. The strong number of Season Ticket Holders in this market and the community’s tremendous response to Disney’s The Lion King are a few of the reasons yet another Broadway blockbuster, Wicked, will make its Wisconsin premiere at the Center in the 2008/09 season.
