2016 Issue 1

A dream come true for Joseph Joseph Wangige grew up in the slums of Nyeri, Kenya where he was spotted by an American businessman who recognised his talent as a footballer and his hunger to learn. He decided to sponsor Joseph’s education and his study visit to the UK. Joseph came to the College in September 2015 from Kenya. He studied 6 months here on a Level 3 non-qualification Football Coaching course and everyone he came into contact with was touched by his story and his motivation to better himself. Although his programme was not linked to a qualification, Joseph was determined to succeed and was entered for Maths and English and some BTEC Football Coaching units. Here Joseph played in the Futsal league and also joined Newport FC reserves. Joseph now wants to come back and complete the course and be an

ambassador for youth football here and in Kenya. “It has been a dream come true learning new football skills and tactics and techniques with the College Futsal and under 19 football team.”- Joseph Wangige

Javier achieved His goals Javier Sierra Pamies was a work placement student from Madrid. He was on a 6 month Erasmus+ work placement. The first half of his placement was spent at UKSA but after Christmas he came to The Isle of Wight College to work in the Futsal Arena. Javier was really motivated and helped the Coaches as well as running futsal sessions with children, helping at the Thursday League and the Junior League. Javier became very popular with the other college students and felt that his placement had helped him to decide that his future career would be working with young people in sport.

Success for Bryce Bryce Sanders came to The Isle of Wight College from the US in September 2014 on a year 1 Level 3 Football Coaching Certificate programme and decided to stay to get the full 180 credit Diploma. He integrated really well into the college teams playing in the U19 league for both AFC Bournemouth and for Portsmouth FC.

“I can tell that I achieved my goals… to understand at least 80% of what I am being told. I think I improved my conversation skills a lot as I could phone to the people I was working with… I met a lot of new and nice people.” - Javier Pamies

Visitors from Germany Anne Unfried and Angela Schneider visited the college for a day from the European Vocational Training Centre (EVTC) for the German Red Cross. They spent time with our Insights Department learning about their provision and also met the Work Based Learning Team to talk about apprenticeships and how they differ in Germany. As part of our Stepping Stones project, two teachers from Insights and one member of the Apprenticeship team will visit the EVTC to learn how they deliver work-based training to students in the first labour market. They have also successfully bid for a return visit.

Erasmus+ Erasmus+ is the European Union programme for education, training, youth and sport. It runs for seven years, until 2020, with organisations invited to apply for funding each year to undertake creative and worthwhile activities.

Italian connection In March five Italian teachers from schools in Rome visited the college to complete part of their Erasmus+ funded programme POLL, comparing IT provision in schools and colleges across Europe. They spent a week with lecturers from a range of curriculum areas discovering how they teach with IT and use it to create resources and track student progress. They also learnt how lessons are observed with regards to evaluating teachers’ usage of IT in the classroom.

Fabulous New Facilities For Learners With A Disability Our new fully accessible Pathways Centre for learners with a disability is now open and looking GREAT! Facilities include a sensory room, hydro-therapy pool, performance studio, specially adapted kitchens, classrooms and social spaces.

Teacher Training Kristina Johnson, a trainee teacher from Kiipulan College, Finland, spent one week training with our Teaching assistants in Health and Social Care and Pathways sections in October 2015. Her College specialises in provision for students with special educational needs (SEN) and she was particularly impressed with our new Pathways Centre for SEN students with dance studio, swimming pool and sensory room. Her second week was spent with Age UK where she discovered how the charity works and what services they can provide. Following her visit, our College has successfully applied for Erasmus+ funding for a project called ‘Steeping Stones’ - two Pathways teachers to visit her college next academic year. Her college has also bid successfully for a small group of SEN students to do work placements here in Spring 2017.

China In March 2016, Paul Buckland (Head of Department) participated in an AOC/British Council Senior Leaders’ visit to Beijing. There he was paired with Gunagdong Industry Polytechnic, Guangzhou, which he visited for some of his stay. The Polytechnic is interested in teacher training and we are currently working on a strategy for delivering this.

Health and social care In February 2015 Sandra Cabannes of Maison Familiale Rurale (MFR) Sainte Florine spent a week work shadowing in Health and Social Care and Childcare. Following this the college submitted a successful Erasmus+ bid for two of our Health and Social Care lecturers to visit her school in October to investigate the differences in the curriculum and how we might work together in the future. As a result Sandra revisited our College in May 2015 to work shadow in the International Department. Her colleague, Florence Bonnemoy Karadjoff, did a work placement at the local hospice and accompanied our lecturer, Gemma Cherry, on work placement visits. They also both attended an English class to see how it is taught here as a foreign language. We are now planning a student exchange through the Le Lefevre Trust and will submit a bid at the next deadline.

Forest schools As part of our Erasmus+ bid last year The Isle of Wight College also successfully acquired funding for three Childcare teachers to visit Birkebeineren Friluftsbarnehage in Lillehammer, Norway to see how forest schools are run there. The College had recently opened a Forest School on the Isle of Wight and they wanted to learn new practices to apply. Our Stepping Stones project includes a student mobility for 12 students to work in the Forest School and local Primary School as well as attend a local college in Spring 2017.

Japanese students at the Farewell Evening with Isle of Wight College students

The Isle of Wight College has been receiving Japanese students at the College since 1991. We have a very strong link with Carriere Hospitality College in Kyoto and each year they send students to us for English and Hospitality training. The students work in our College training restaurant and also improve their pronunciation and technical vocabulary in tailor-made classes.

Thailand The College has been working with ECE Cultural Exchange for several years. They send Thai students around the world on cultural programmes from 3 to 6 weeks. The programmes include English classes, buddying in local schools, local cultural visits and a presentation of Thai culture. In January 2015, three members of College staff attended a British Council recruitment Fair in Bangkok where they met the agent, Suekanya Hemwimol. She will visit the Isle of Wight College in June following two highly successful student visits. In October 2015, fifteen students visited for three weeks and buddied at Medina College. Then in March 2016,
