BED GUIDE

A bed is a bed, is a bed… right? Well, sort of, but not quite – there are so many shapes and sizes, each with its own unique style. A bed can be more than just a place to sleep: it can be the warm centre of the bedroom – the cosiest spot in the home – and there’s no reason why form and function can’t match comfort in exactly the way you want it to.

Storage Ottoman & Divan Storage beds have – no big surprises here – some sort of storage incorporated into them. Divan bed bases come in two halves, so they’re easy to move around, and provide storage in the form of pull-out drawers. They also provide better support for a mattress than bases with slats. An ottoman bed frame has (usually gas-assisted) struts that lets you lift up the entire mattress with ease to reveal loads of space underneath – much more than drawers. Some ottomans will allow you to lift from the end, others from the side. Both kinds come in a range of sizes from single to super king size, and are upholstered in a wide variety of fabrics and finishes.

Ideal for Smaller rooms

Without much space for standalone storage – but ensure there’s enough clearance room to pull out drawers or lift up the ottoman base safely.

Minimalist-style rooms

Where you want to keep clutter out of sight.

Kids’ rooms

Under-bed drawers can be great for toy storage!

Spare rooms

That double as spare bedding store cupboards.

Wooden Beds Wooden beds come in all shapes and sizes – from simple frames to cabin beds and even ottoman bases. A huge variety of styles and colours are available – dark and light natural colours, as well as plenty of finishes – which can make the perfect focal point for both traditional and modern themes. A wooden bed is solid, sturdy and natural.

Ideal for Cosy rustic-themed rooms. A bold and sturdy centrepiece in a minimalist haven. Just about anywhere, really! View the Range >

Metal Beds Metal bed frames aren’t quite as varied in style and colour as their wooden equivalents, but if you’re after a very traditional or postmodern look, then a metal bed will certainly deliver. Although strong and sturdy, metal beds are surprisingly lightweight, so they’re easy to move around the room.

Ideal for: Kids’ rooms

Plenty of space underneath, and they can be moved easily when it’s time to swap who gets the bigger room!

Traditional antique stylings

The balustrades can complement a great Victorian look.

Modern minimalists

Depending on the style, a metal bed will match sleek and stylish metal furniture very nicely indeed.

Keen designers

Again, the ease of moving them around makes them perfect for those who like to mix up their room layout regularly.

Upholstered Beds With bed frames covered in comfy fabric, upholstered beds are the best option if you want a bed that just exudes a cosy feeling before you’ve even hopped under the covers. A big cushy headboard is standard, with plenty of styles – including ottomans and sleigh beds – featuring footboards for a lovely enclosed feeling. Under-bed storage is a common feature of an upholstered bed, thanks to the large enclosed bases. One of the best things about upholstered beds is the possibility for choice: many are available in a wide range of fabrics that can be tailored to your choosing.

Ideal for Comfort-seekers

Nothing says comfy like a plush upholstered frame.

Big, high-ceilinged rooms

High headboards, particularly curved styles with a bigger footprint, can really help fill the space in a grander bedroom.

The tidier among us

Under-bed storage is much easier to conceal in an upholstered bed, whether you choose drawers or a lift-up ottoman.

Leather Does anything say style and luxury quite as confidently as leather? With a bed frame upholstered in leather, you can have a plush and lavish bed with a great value that may surprise you! Make the most of the big and bold frames with under-bed storage in an ottoman style for a perfect combination of form and function. Dark and light finish options mean a leather bed can suit the style of any room, too. Faux-leather beds are also available as a lower cost option in just as many styles – you’d be pushed to tell it wasn’t the real thing.

Ideal for Making a big impression

With a bold, classic choice of bedroom furniture.

Those in the pursuit of superb comfort

Leather beds are probably the most luxurious and comfortable options in our range.

Sleigh Beds Sleigh beds have elegant head and footboards that curve outwards – like on an old-fashioned sleigh, unsurprisingly! To create an eye-catching style that calls to mind a sophisticated French hotel, a Swiss ski lodge or a Scandinavian chalet. Modern upholstered styles can also make for a bold and lavish centrepiece of a minimalist room. Sleigh beds have a larger footprint because of their outward-curving headboards, so while they take up a bit more space, they certainly stand out.

Ideal for Making the most of a bigger room. Accompanying antique furniture

While storage sleigh beds are available, most styles rely on a low foot end for their elegant appearance, so you’ll probably need to pair them with some standalone storage.

Creating a fun, cosy, elegant or sophisticated European style.

Day Beds & Guest Beds A sofa by day, a single bed by night, a double bed when needed and with loads of storage whatever the time may be, day beds are a brilliantly practical way to make the most out of a space. Day bed frames have raised panels on three sides, so you can pile them high with cushions and use them as seating when they’re not being slept on. Some designs extend, and pull out into double beds, and under-bed storage can be incorporated really neatly in to their big, chunky frames. Best of all, they make it slightly more acceptable to stay in bed all day.

Ideal for Smaller guest rooms

Extend them out into a double when needed, without completely sacrificing that spare room storage space.

Studio flats

A unique alternative to a fold-out sofa bed when you’re really pushed for space, with the added bonus of extra storage underneath.

Kids’ rooms

Colourful cushions, storage space for toys, and side panels to decorate and turn into fort walls can make for the perfect place for both sleep and play.

TV Beds TV beds are similar to sleigh beds in that they have high head and footboards but, instead of a continental curved design, the foot end conceals a TV, removing the need for a TV cabinet. Many designs come with under bed compartments for a DVD player, set-top box or games console to be stored neatly out of the way. Unfortunately, TVs aren’t included, but they can accommodate anything up to a 32” screen with a 5.5” thickness. With a TV bed you can relax in comfort and style, perfect for a cosy night in with a film or two.

Ideal for Bigger bedrooms, where a wall-mounted TV or cabinet would have to be too far away from the bed for optimum viewing. Alternatively, smaller bedrooms that can’t fit a TV cabinet comfortably could benefit too!

Film lovers, gamers and TV-addicts But be warned, you may never get out of bed again.

Modern bedrooms Anyone with a love of tech, modern stylings, and futuristic comforts may just have found their dream bed.

Tall and elegant high-foot beds and woven rattan headboards are also common features. Whether you’re after a simple-yet-chic look or a lavish boutique feel, we can always learn a lot from French styles that never go out of fashion!

Ideal for Creating a fashionable statement in any room Whether it’s styled in minimalist whites or traditional dark woods.

Choose your size Choosing the right size for a bed is as important as finding the right style. It shouldn’t shrink into the corner of a bedroom, but it shouldn’t take up so much space that you can’t move around it easily either. Measure your room and planned bed position carefully, and always allow for more space than you think you need! Beds come in all shapes and sizes, so remember that a king-size bed in one style could be larger than the same classification in another. The size of the bed base and surround differs from model to model, and will be larger than the mattress dimensions. Remember that sleigh beds with curved ends, storage drawers, and bulkier TV beds will have a larger footprint, so remember to accommodate for more space, and to consult individual product descriptions for exact sizes.
