20 May 2001 Dear parish Family of Assumption, CCHS, SMHS, St. Leo the Great, brother priests, beloved friends and family, In the summer of '66, my father drove me to Resurrection College, in Kitchener, Ontario, Canada, so we could look at the seminary which I, at age 17 would attend in September. It was a 12 hour drive and I do cherish the memory of having all this time with him all to myself. I asked him a lot of questions which might not otherwise have been asked except for the fact of spending that much time together alone. He explained to me what it was like growing up with sisters, why he cried when his mother died and how he came to marry my mother. I'll never forget him telling me, "Tommy, any time you want to come home there will always be a place for you." He also talked about how troubled he was over my brother James being in Vietnam, how proud he was of him especially since he volunteered to serve, and he was further concerned that my brother John might also go into the seminary the following year because we were both close to Father James Gay.

St. Peter Basililca, Rome, 1976

After ten years of "formation" and 25 years of ministry, I have come to see ever more clearly the lessons of life my father and my mother have taught me. I thank God I was formed by them prior to entering the seminary and I often attribute to them any virtue, sensitivity or compassion I have acquired. They modeled for me and my brothers: faith, love and commitment. Dad taught mostly by his deeds and daily dedication as a bread winner, an honest Fire Lieutenant and faithful Catholic. Mom was more demonstrative and we would talk to one another hours on end. It was a great comfort to me to have a home filled with warmth, security and parents who were so extraordinarily selfless. On my twenty fifth, I am delighted to honor my father and my mother for their openness to life and love. God has generously blessed me with them and I cherish the opportunity to have been at their bed-sides when each of them died. I often preach that there are many vocations, many ways to follow Christ and though I treasure my call to priesthood, there is no doubt that my parent's call to parent me, and my brothers James and John, was no less a holy call. At every mass, I think of them and their memory brings me a deep joy and sense of inner peace. Each of you in your own particular way gives life to me and I wish to thank and praise you for your many acts of kindness to me. I shall never forget my parent's love. To Lieutenant Commander, James A. Gay, Chaplain in the U.S. Navy, who taught me at Immaculate High School and inspired me to be a priest, I cannot thank you enough for your friendship, compassion and generosity. Finally, I will equally remember you, the people of Assumption, St. Leo, Central Catholic HS, St. Mary HS, and all my beloved friends and family. With sincere gratitude in the Lord,
