From the Pastor & Liturgy THANKS TO JERRY DUFRESNE Jerry Dufresne has served as head sacristan for the past 7 years; he has been sacristan for daily Mass and for the 5 pm Vigil Mass. He has also kept an inventory of sacristy supplies and offered his help in many ways. Jerry decided to retire from his volunteer position as head sacristan and this past Friday (March 28) was his last day of official duties. Jerry and his wife will still be members at Sacred Heart, so we will still Jerry around the parish. We are very grateful for Jerry’s many years of faithful service; if you see Jerry please thank him for his hard work.

WE NEED SACRISTANS There are openings for sacristans for daily and weekend Masses to join a sacristan team who will work together to help in this important ministry for our parish. You can volunteer for one Mass a week or one Mass a month. There will be training for new sacristans. Sacristans should be in high school or older. If you are interested, please contact Deanna Tighe, Pastoral Assistant for Stewardship, at the Parish Office.

There are many special liturgies of Holy Week and the Paschal Triduum which require a lot of liturgical ministers and other behind-the-scene support, e.g., cleaning, arranging flowers, etc. If you are interested in helping this year, please contact the Parish Office.

The obligation of abstinence applies to those 14 years and older. The law does not oblige when health or ability to work would be seriously affected.

Faith Formation FORTY WEEKS

REFLECTION OF THE WEEK

Week four of the Forty Weeks journey has begun. Over 160 Sacred Heart parishioners have begun the 15 minute daily commitment of prayer and reflection. Day by day God is revealing love and mercy to all individuals who are open to an inward journey. Participants have said: “This is a spiritual renewal journey that will take you step by step to a serious look at your relationship with God. It has allowed me to focus on aspects of my life that builds up hope, love, and gratitude.” If you purchased the Kindle edition and did not register for Forty Weeks with the parish and would like to receive weekly suggestions from Fr. Bill Watson or you are interested in Forty Weeks, contact Val Keller at [email protected].

From today’s Gospel reading “Jesus found the man and said, "Do you believe in the Son of Man?" He answered him and said, "Who is he sir, that I may believe in him." Today this Eucharist is one more stop on our way to experience what the blind man did. Here the light of faith helps us see Jesus in the Eucharistic signs and to hear him in his Word. Jesus tells us what he told the blind man, "You have seen him and the one speaking with you is he." Adults: How has this Lent opened my eyes to the presence of Jesus in my life? What difference will this new encounter with the Lord make in my daily life? What am I doing in my life right now to move toward light rather than darkness? Child: How can I let the light of my faith in Jesus shine for others to see? (opsouth.org)

POPE FRANCIS REFLECTION Pope Francis teaches that, "The presence of God among people did not take place in a perfect, idyllic world but rather in this real world, which is marked by so many things both good and bad, by division, wickedness, poverty, arrogance and war. He chose to live in our history as it is, with all the weight of its limitations and of its tragedies. In doing so, he has demonstrated in an unequalled manner his merciful and truly loving disposition toward the human creature. He is God-withus. Jesus is God-with-us. Do you believe this? Together let us profess: Jesus is God with us! Jesus is God with us always and forever with us in history's suffering and sorrow." How would you name the presence of Jesus in your life today? This is a good question to reflect on during this time of Lent.

MEN’S LENTEN RETREAT Prayer, Humor and Reflection: Conversing with Jesus in the Digital Age. Retreat Director: Fr. Michael J. Ryan. In our intensely high pressure, media driven age, the value of time set aside for prayer and reflection has never been so pronounced. Fr. Ryan will reinforce the need for us to commit ourselves to brief time periods for prayer and the need for spiritual perspective in this material age, especially considering the recent teachings of Pope Francis. Acknowledging the spiritual limitations of our age will move us to a deeper Lenten conversion in joy and freedom. April 4th & 5th, in the Koinonia Room, St. Madeleine Sophie Parish, Bellevue Friday 6:00pm Check-in and Dessert 7:00pm - 9:00pm Program Saturday 8:30am Continental Breakfast 9am - 3pm Program (includes lunch and breaks. $35 for Friday and Saturday, $15 for Friday only or $25 for Saturday only. Administration & Stewardship CATHOLIC RELIEF SERVICES (CRS) ANNUAL COLLECTION Next weekend, March 29-30, the 4th Sunday of Lent, our parish takes up the annual Catholic Relief Services (CRS) Collection. The theme this year is “Help Jesus in Disguise.” This collection supports six Catholic agencies that touch more than 100 million lives around the world. The funds from the collection help provide food to the hungry, welcome and support to displaced refugees, and invaluable life skills to those seeking a better life. How will you help Jesus in disguise? Please give generously to the Catholic Relief Services Collection. See the special insert in today’s bulletin for more information. Please contribute next weekend using the special collection envelope found in this month’s offering envelope packet. Extra envelopes are available in the pews. To assist our transfer of these funds, please make your check payable to Sacred Heart Parish. This collection is one of several special collections taken up each year at Sacred Heart. It is an opportunity to give from the “other half” of your financial stewardship, the percentage set aside for other charities of your choice. During Lent, Catholic Relief Services provides two opportunities for Catholics in the United States to live in true communion with our brothers and sisters worldwide—through CRS’ annual collection and through CRS’ Operation Rice Bowl. Operation Rice Bowl offers simple yet powerful ways for families to bring our Catholic faith to life during the holy season of Lent. The program provides resources for families to foster their faith life in the home. By participating in the traditional Lenten practices of prayer, fasting and almsgiving through Operation Rice Bowl, the faithful are making a positive difference in the lives of our brothers and sisters who are most in need.

Visit the archdiocesan website, seattlearchdiocese.org for more information about the tax return/refund fraud situation. STEWARDSHIP AND SCRIPTURE In last weekend’s reading from Exodus, we hear of the hardships endured by the people of Israel on their wilderness journey out of Egypt. The wilderness is a demanding place for human life. Just trying to survive can seriously test our faith. In the Israelites’ journey away from oppression, harsh conditions challenged their trust in the God who liberated them. But their transition brings them closer to God, and they are constantly reminded of the Lord’s gracious provision and nurturing. Good stewards believe the Lord’s presence transforms their own “wilderness” experiences into a place of divine mercy and nourishment.

CONTRIBUTIONS BEHIND BUDGET As you can see by the Stewardship of Treasure summary below, actual financial contributions are behind budgeted projections after eight months of the current fiscal year. While staff members who manage budgets have done a good job of holding the line on expenses, what this revenue shortfall means is that some of our planned deferred maintenance projects this summer will not be fully funded from the parish operating budget and money may have to be taken from savings in order to accomplish them. Two month contribution reminder letters were recently mailed to all parish households. If you are behind in your 2014 Treasure commitment, please do what you can to catch up as soon as possible. If you have not returned your financial commitment card for 2014, please do so right away. Thank you to all who make an annual stewardship commitment to Sacred Heart and do their best to fulfill it. Your ongoing and consistent support with time and talent as well as treasure makes all of our parish ministries possible and allows us to be good stewards of our parish and school campus.

These monies are used to help fund school programs, offset the cost of tuition and provide the high quality catholic education you have come to expect. Please prayerfully consider a gift to this most important fund. All gifts are 100% tax deductible. We also work with companies like Microsoft, Boeing, and many others that provide corporate matching. If you are not sure whether your employer offers this benefit, you can contact your human resources personnel or feel free to email Theresa Daigle ([email protected]) with your questions. Envelopes are available at the church office and in the Narthex. Thank you for your consideration.

Social Concerns CRS AND CRS RICE BOWL

OPERATION RICEBOWL

The Catholic Relief Services collection this month, supports the U.S. Catholic community’s outreach on global issues, with sisters and brothers throughout the world. The collection supports Catholic Church organizations that carry out international relief and solidarity efforts. Programs include relief and resettlement for victims of persecution, war, and natural disasters; development projects to improve living conditions for the poor; legal and support services for poor immigrants; peace and reconciliation work for people suffering from violence; and advocacy on behalf of the powerless. More information and parish resources at www.usccb.org/ crscollection. Funds sent from the CRS Collection in U.S. dioceses are distributed to: Catholic Relief Services for international relief and development. (This is a separate funding from Rice Bowl donations.)

CRS Rice Bowl Reflection: Malawi This week, CRS Rice Bowl invites us to enter into solidarity with the people of Malawi. We are encouraged to reflect on the Catholic social teaching principle, Dignity of Work and Rights of Workers, and reminded that, just as He labored to create the universe, God sanctifies and calls us to work. Let us pray this week for our brothers and sisters in Malawi and all around the world, that we work with joy for God’s greater glory.

The CRS RICE BOWL program supports projects directly related to alleviation of hunger and poor nutrition. Some grants can be made to address root causes of hunger (e.g., economic development) and all programs’ activities are consistent with social and moral teachings of the Catholic Church.

CUPS OF SOLIDARITY Join together in solidarity for prayer and fellowship at a morning session of the Lenten Soup Suppers called ‘Cups of Solidarity’ this Tuesday morning from 9:30 AM – 10:30 am directly following the Word and Communion service in the parish office, Conference Room #1. The country of El Salvador will be featured and includes coffee and simple traditional breakfast foods. Bring your Lenten spirituality to life by joining in solidarity with our brothers and sisters overseas most in need of our prayers. All are welcome!
