GHENT UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL DEPARTMENT OF NEUROSURGERY

Dear participant,

De Pintelaan 185 ▪ 9000 Gent ▪ Belgium

► CHANGED DATE: 9, 10, 11 and 12 May 2010 ◄

As usual we are already preparing our next international workshop on endoscopic neurosurgery in Ghent. As you might have seen on the website of neuroendoscopy.org this was orginally planned in October. For a number of reasons however this period seems to offer too much problems and simultaneous other congresses. Another reason is that we are spending a lot of work in the final stage of an atlas of operative techniques in endoscopic neurosurgery. The publisher and we ourselves scheduled a deadline for this book in May 2010. In the past we had some 50 participants in our workshops and already now a number of people have already registered for the next workshop. The only period in which there are no incompatibilities with other activities is from 9 to 12 May 2010. For all these reasons we want it to announce this workshop already now to give everyone the opportunity to participate. Practical information is to be found on the website www.neuroendoscopy.org. With our workshop, we offer each participant a hands-on training in the application of endoscopic instruments for a broad spectrum of indications. There will be interactive teaching videos and discussion on operative techniques. We will demonstrate the organisation of the operation theatre and the role of the instrument nurse. During the course there will be practice on anesthetized rats with full equipment of all instruments, video, laser, and bipolar coagulation. There is a complete installation per two participants. This year’s social program embraces our beautiful city by highlighting the best Ghent has to offer. Nowhere else you will find so much history per square metre in a pedestrian historical city centre. A city embedded in the Middle Ages when Ghent was, next to Paris, the second largest town north of the Alps. Here pounds the young heart of a dazzling city of culture full of music, theatre, film and visual arts. A city where cultural perspectives are constantly renewed and enlarged, where culture is a feast and where feasting is a form of culture. Also let’s not forget the people, for they undoubtedly add to the unique atmosphere in our sparkling city of culture. It’s for good reason that this year Ghent was voted third most authentic historic city center worldwide. It is a crown worn with great pride. Hoping to welcome you in Belgium, we send you our best regards,

Prof. Dr. J. Caemaer t Course director

WHO IS PROF. DR. J. CAEMAERT?

COURSE DIRECTOR

Dear colleagues, We have been active in the field of endoscopic neurosurgery since 1986, when we designed and developed the Caemaert Wolf Endoscope. During seven years we have been modifying the original concept and came after 5 prototypes to the actual instrument. A large number of working instruments was also developed for use through the working channels of the endoscope. From 1993, I presented the endoscope and the results on many international congresses and workshops all over the world and the instrument is widely accepted as a dedicated very well functioning neuro-endoscope. Recently we produced a DVD as a digital users’ manual of this neuroendoscope, containing a detailed description of the instrument, its application in the theatre and a number of typical indications illustrated by video. You will receive a free copy of the DVD at this workshop. Best regards,

Prof. Dr. J. Caemaer t Course director and speaker

WHO IS PROF. DR. J. GROTENHUIS?

GUIDED BOATTRIP OF 40 MINUTES WITH ENGLISH GUIDE We start by having a historical excursion by boat with English guide through the medieval centre of Ghent. It is an enthralling historical passage through medieval Ghent admiring its wide range of monuments: •

old guildhalls built by bargees, bricklayers, fishmongers and marksem of the hagbut association;

impressive castles such as the “Counts Castle” and the “Princes Court”, birthplace of Charles V;

the old fishmarket facing the even older Meat Hall;

the more than solid 13th century Monasteries previously inhabited by Augustinians and Dominicans;

the Ancient Port of Ghent along with its mercantile houses;

Het Pand”, a former Dominican monastery, is located in the historical centre of the city, on the banks of the river “Leie”. Since its rehabilitation and restoration, finished in 1991, “Het Pand” has been offering a wide range of possibilities for the organisation of scientific congresses and cultural events. “Het Pand” houses some valuable collections, such as the rich ethnographical and archaeological collections of the university, the Museum for the History of Medicine, full-size photographs of paintings of Brueghel and Early Flemish Masters, and an interesting collection of stained glass.
