N AT U R E AT I T S B E S T Some 100 species of native trees live in the Smokies, more than any other North American national park. There are also over 1,600 flowering plant species and at least 4,000 species of non-flowering plants. And you won’t be enjoying all this beautiful nature alone. There are hundreds of species of animals living in the park, including a rare variety of lung-less salamander, more than 200 species of birds, 66 types of mammals, 50 native fish species, 39 varieties of reptiles and 43 species of amphibians, some of which are found nowhere else in the world. The National Park Service has also reintroduced river otters, peregrine falcons and several species of fish and in recent years has also released herds of elk, which were eliminated from the park in the mid-1800s.

Great Smoky Mountains National Park is home to nearly 80 historic structures—houses, barns, outbuildings, churches, schools and grist mills.
HIKING TRAILS Within its 800-mile trail system, you’ll see the best the park has to offer whether you’re on a short nature trail or a longer backcountry hike. Some favorites are listed here.
Gatlinburg Trail This trail is frequently used by joggers, walkers and bicyclists and is one of two walking paths which visitors can walk dogs. The trail stretches 1.9 miles* from the Sugarlands Visitor Center to the outskirts of the City of Gatlinburg. It is relatively flat and runs through the forest alongside the West Prong of the Little Pigeon River.
The Forney Ridge Trail A moderate 1.8 mile* trek taking you to the national park’s highest grassy bald, Andrews Bald.
Laurel Falls At the end of this easy 1.3 mile* hike along a paved trail, you’ll see the breathtaking site of this double-drop falls.
Sugarlands Valley Nature Trail Located near the Sugarlands Visitor Center, this level, paved, half-mile* trail winds through a forest and alongside a river. For more information, park maps, guidebooks, handbooks and videos are available at the park bookstores and primary Gatlinburg visitor centers. *Mileage noted is one way.

A BEAUTY T H AT ’ S W O R T H PROTECTING Gatlinburg is going green. In fact, up to 70% of municipal waste is diverted from placement in a landfill thanks to recycling initiatives and a state-ofthe-art composting plant. In addition, Gatlinburg also has one of the state’s largest public transportation systems with our trolleys serving about 800,000 riders a year. The City’s holiday lights celebration, Gatlinburg Winter Magic, is also getting into the act, converting its three million bulb light displays from incandescent bulbs to energy efficient LED lights. WHO PUT THE GATLIN IN GATLINBURG Gatlinburg has a history filled with stories, legends and colorful characters — including the city's namesake, Radford C. Gatlin. Gatlin was a controversial figure who opened the village's second general store, where he established a post office. Gradually, the village, which was named White Oak Flats at the time, became known as Gatlinburg. Unfortunately, while the name Gatlinburg stuck around, Radford Gatlin wasn't so lucky, as he was banished from the town around the time of the Civil War for his political views.

THE OGLES AND THE “LAND OF BLUE SMOKE”

Centuries before the first Europeans arrived, the Cherokees called the area known as Gatlinburg Shaconage which means “Land of Blue Smoke”.
Gatlinburg remained an agriculturalbased society for many years with a thriving logging industry. However, in the 1930s, with the purchase of thousands of once-forested acres, the Great Smoky Mountains National Park was created. It was a move that transformed the area with tourism becoming the driving force behind Gatlinburg’s economy.
When Europeans did arrive, around the turn of the 19th century, the community they established was known as White Oak Flats. One of the settlers was a man named William Ogle, who arrived in 1802. He was so taken with the area that he cut logs for a cabin that would be the first in Gatlinburg and upon returning to collect his family in South Carolina, he described Tennessee as “The Land of Paradise”. Sadly, before William could return to Gatlinburg, he fell ill and died in 1803. It was his widow, Martha Jane Huskey Ogle, who first settled in the valley with her five sons, two daughters, her brother and his family in 1807.

Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts
611 Parkway Noah Ogle was Gatlinburg’s first merchant and the Ogle Store established in 1850 was run by generations of Ogles. In 1910, the store was moved to the intersection of River Road and Elkmont Highway where it remained until it was torn down in the mid-1970s to make room for the Mountain Mall.
556 Parkway Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts, a national craft education center founded in 1912, offers the opportunity to participate in one-week, two-week and weekend workshops taught by professional practicing artists in state-of-the art studios. Situated on an historic campus in the heart of Gatlinburg, the galleries feature craft exhibitions free to the public.
Ogle Cabin Downtown Gatlinburg Erected by Martha Jane Huskey Ogle around 1807, Gatlinburg’s first cabin still stands in the middle of our bustling downtown. Martha Jane’s great grandson, Andrew Ogle and his family were the last to live in the cabin, abandoning it around 1910. Since then the historic cabin has been a settlement school, a hospital and a museum of artifacts. Today, it resides a short distance from its original site on the former site of the community’s first church.
Pi Beta Phi Settlement School 556 Parkway In 1910, Pi Beta Phi, a national women’s organization, brought education to the community where no formal schooling existed. Over the years, the school’s courses expanded to include vocational and home economics training for the community’s adults. In 1921, the school expanded by acquiring an additional 35 acres and today is known as the Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts.
First Baptist Church Baskins Creek Although this area was originally settled by Presbyterians, the first church in Gatlinburg was Baptist. Historical records show the White Oak Flats “arm” of the Sevierville Baptist Church convened in the early 1800s on Baskins Creek probably at the present location of the Ogle Cabin. The first frame church was constructed in 1875 at the corner of Parkway and Baskins Creek Road where today you’ll find a historic plaque on the sidewalk.
Great Smoky Arts & Crafts Community Nestled in an eight-mile motor loop, you’ll find over 100 shops and restaurants in the Great Smoky Arts and Crafts Community. It’s the largest community of its type in North America and doesn’t just offer one-of-a-kind products but a real firsthand experience of a big part of the Smoky Mountains history and culture.

DRIVING DIRECTIONS Traffic in the Smokies can get heavy, especially along Highway 66 during peak travel seasons (July and October are the highest travel months). Take one of these less-traveled and scenic routes to Gatlinburg and you're well on your way to the perfect mountain getaway.
From Virginia From I-81 South take I-40 East to Exit 435 (Newport) and follow Hwy 321 South to Gatlinburg. Approximate drive time from interstate: 45 minutes.

time-share sales and solicitation While strolling the charming streets of Gatlinburg, you may be approached to consider spending some of your vacation time to participate in a Time-Share sales presentation. To gain your attention, you may be offered directions, maps or other information with regards to the City or the National Park and in order to entice you to attend a sales presentation you may be offered free tickets, meals or other incentives. The City of Gatlinburg and the Gatlinburg Chamber of Commerce in no way endorse these methods of enticement or the information utilized to gain the interest of our visitors. Your initial contact with this type of activity would typically be an acquisition agent or OPC. These persons are required to be licensed by the State of Tennessee and should be wearing a photo identification badge giving their name and other information. Any solicitation by persons other than those wearing an ID badge should be reported to a Gatlinburg Police Officer or other City official. Any rude behavior, physical touching, or making false statements by an acquisition agent should be reported in writing (including the name and identification number if possible) to the City of Gatlinburg, P.O. Box 5, Gatlinburg, TN 37738 and/or the Gatlinburg Chamber of Commerce, P.O. Box 527, Gatlinburg TN 37738. While the Gatlinburg Chamber of Commerce realizes that Time-Share has the potential to be an affordable vacation alternative for many, Time-Share presentations vary greatly in the length of time needed to complete the requirements for acquiring promised promotions. Should you elect to attend a Time-Share presentation, we encourage you to inquire at the appropriate company as to the specific time commitment involved.
