Welcome Address Dear Colleagues, As congress president I would like to invite you to the 5th European Conference on Schizophrenia Research, which will be held from 24 – 26 Sep 2015 in Berlin (Germany) under the motto “Bridging Gaps – Improving Outcomes”. Recent reviews disclosed that almost a third of individuals with schizophrenia who require treatment do not receive any or adequate treatment, even in countries with a wellorganized health care system. Beyond this “treatment gap” in terms of individuals who do not receive treatment although they need it, there are a lot more “gaps” to be bridged in order to improve outcomes. The perception of such gaps depends on the perspective taken as a researcher or clinician, as a patient, or as a policy maker. Let me just mention some: Gaps in service provision as a result of gaps in mental health policy and financing, i.e. lack or misallocation of resources. Treatment gaps due to lacking availability of certain interventions but also due to barriers to help-seeking. A “science-to-service-gap” describing the fact that evidence based treatments are not administered for several reasons or, more generally speaking, a “translational gap” in terms of a delay in translating novel research findings into practice. Moreover, despite the efficacy of available treatments there are still features of schizophrenia that currently cannot be treated sufficiently (e.g. cognitive deficits and negative symptoms), constituting a “knowledge gap”. Far too often services still fail to engage schizophrenia patients, a fact that constitutes a noteworthy “utilization-gap”. Patients’ needs in certain respects – low threshold services, individualised treatment, information, access to work, social inclusion, quality of life, just to mention some aspects – are not adequately met by treatment and service provision. The extent of those gaps might be different in different European countries, but bridging these gaps and thus improving outcomes should be in the focus of all professionals working with or for the sake of people with schizophrenia. The ECSR 2015 will be an ideal platform to present such data, to discuss underlying reasons of different kinds of gaps and to jointly identify strategies and ways to bridge them. Accordingly the active contribution of (basic, clinical, health service) researchers, clinicians and therapists to the scientific programme is most welcome and those are cordially invited to join us. I look forward to meeting with you in Berlin in autumn 2015 at the ECSR. Sincerely yours,

Wolfgang Gaebel Congress President
